You have to pray like hell that the cap is going to rise faster than expected with a new franchise and the new tv deals.

With a new deal for Nurse coming soon... is this team ever going to have capspace?

seriously, GMKH needs to put all his energy and pull to get Dougie to come here. get Connor to give him a call, get Messier, get him his favorite childhood blankie which he thought he'd lost in a house fire. we should have gotten him from Boston when Flames originally got him but Sweeney didn't want to deal with ex-GM Chiarelli. Can't let him slip again
VIP lifetime membership and back stage access to all museums in Edmonton. Get the mayor on the line Holland!

This was exactly the Keith trade IMO. Such a position of strength and blow away 5.5 mil in cap immediately.

And it would be one thing to spend cap room like a stupid moron the second you get it with no discipline like Chiarelli and Holland do if the contracts were like 1 or 2 years or even 3 years max.

But this franchise can't help itself and spends irresponsibly on massive term on top of dollars and then they come crying 2-3 years later that they can't upgrade the roster once it inevitably dawns on them that actually Lucic/Hyman/whoever + McDavid doesn't automatically equal a playoff run and they actually need a lot more help.

Economics would suggest it would.

As much as we malign Gary Bettman (for good reason) he's excellent at growing the league economics wise.

I really like the player. Great 5v5 and can PK which is what we need.

Can't disagree with term issues though.
I hope you are right. I’m understand theirs value in Hyman and he does bring alot to the table. But really think production wise he was pumped up on that Leafs team. I don’t think he produces the same for the Oilers.

The flat cap is result of the owners lending money essentially during these down years. So the cap will grow but not for 2+ years.

Exactly. I missed our old early 2000 Oilers who didn't have superstars, but just sheer grinding and determination is what got us in the playoffs.

I miss Jason Smith in particular … but yes, a Smytty version 2.0 is what I am hoping Hyman can be.

I assume a lot of people posting on this site never watched Smyth, or Smith, or any of the warriors this team had. A few of those types would go a long way on this team.

Yes but we got the same pieces offense-wise with the Leafs. Even better since Draisaitl and McDavid are an upgrade from Matthews and Marner. I can see him getting 25 to 30 goals if partnered with either one easily.

Bettman is a dinosaur and a cancer. The NHL making more money these days, I bet that would happened anyways and even at a higher rate with someone more competent at the helm.

I don't really care about term. Cap hit is what matters, and imo if Hyman comes in at low 5s that's not a bad deal. Leaves them room to add more, especially if they are able to get out of the Neal and Koskinen contracts. There's not that many great forwards available, and Hyman seems to move the needle at evens more than most of the other options. They'll still have room to add someone like Tatar with this move, so comparing those two players is irrelevant imo.

Hamilton would be a dream, that would be a significant upgrade on last year's team.

Edit: 5 is extremely reasonable for Hyman. I get everyone freaking out when the rumours were 6-7 million, but 5 leaves the team lots of flexibility, and once the cap rises it won't be too bad to get out of anyway. I agree with the sentiment that the next 4 years are the ones that matter, you have to go for it now.

Not even close to the same offensive system though. Leafs can get pucks to the net at will, and do so at volume. This is where Hyman feasts. Oilers don’t do this well.

As I mentioned previously, Bettman has been quoted saying the cap will be flat for the immediate future even after the TV deals. He was also quoted in December saying the players are going to end up owing the league a ton of money, and one route of paying it back might keep the cap flat for 5-6 years.

I would not expect the cap to rise significantly. The league losses are rumored to be in excess of $2.5B~.

Yes we need more of that here. We need more grinders like Moreau, Horcoff, Pisani, Smith, Staios, etc. Those guys really bled for the team. If we had the top 6 now and the top 6 of early 2000's, we'd be Champs. No question about it. Half in skill, the rest that can grind.

Good god, it’s happening isn’t it. Hyman for 7-8ywars term at a high cap hit for either. This contract has to potential to be a franchise crippling. Not a fan of the deal, player. Could see this turning ugly within 2 years let alone 4.
Don’t mean to nitpick but can you tell me what aspects of Hyman’s game that you aren’t a fan of? His contract may end up being ugly and a overpay in terms of money and term, but that doesn’t mean that he isn’t a good and valuable hockey player who would very much so contribute to the team right now.
