The Versteeg situation isn't just about losing Versteeg.

It affects the whole third line.

Caggiula gets less sheltering, Puljujarvi is slotted into the NHL lineup when it's fairly clear he could use AHL time, and Maroon is stuck with the pressure of being the only veteran presence on that line, overseeing 2 rookies.

Jesse has done nothing to show he has stolen a spot. He is being rushed and it will be one of those hindsight 20/20 situations yet again with a promising young player. This whole shiny toy syndrome is a detriment to development, how many more times does it need to be see here before the lesson sinks in? AHL time is not a bad thing.

Depth isn't something you piss away because you couldn't be decisive on your newest prize needing seasoning.

Versteeg was offered a spot on the Flames that the Oilers couldn't match. It's as simple as that. Would you rather play on line 2/3 for the Oilers or line 1/2 for the Flames? Easy choice.

JP was playing on the top line then?

I don't think there's one lock in the Pacific, maybe San Jose. The division looks wide open.

Versteeg is a free agent he is welcome to sign where he wants... takes 2 people to sign the Contract, as we know Chia asked.. he decided not to sign with us. so hard to blame Chia

A lot would have to go right for the Oilers to make the playoffs.

LA/SJ/ANA/STL/CHI/DAL/NSH. There's 7 playoff teams right there with one spot open.

I've been looking at Anaheims roster, it looks bruuuuuutal.
Forward depth is so bad, without Rakell they have Getzlaf, Perry, Kesler, (Silf) that's it. How much will Lindholm situation hurt them?
(Chicago has 1 scoring line), La's forward depth looks bad right now, Gaborik missing the 1st 6 weeks won't help, they lost Lucic.

I wouldn't say those are quaranteed playoff teams, they are hurting now.
The 1st 4-6 weeks for Edmonton are highly important.

Edmonton doesn't have the best defense in the division but it should be good, average.
They can have one of the best forward groups in the division, the best 3rd line in the division which can make up for the defensive difference.
It should be possible.

Who cares why Versteeg left. He's not here anymore and now the Oilers have that hole on their roster if the rookies can't handle it. Chia had a very easy no risk opportunity to address a lack of depth on waivers yesterday and chose not to. Now he's been burned by having Versteeg head down the highway and being left with no insurance should one of Caggiula or Puljujarvi struggle.

Versteeg leaving wasn't necessarily a forseeable outcome, but needing additional depth certainly was. Chia failed to do something so simple as pick up a 40 point winger for free and it already bit him a few hours later.

It's hard to blame Chiarelli for going into game 1 having one ACTUAL right winger in the top 9? Honestly?

There were a handful of people here yesterday saying that the Oilers should pick up Parenteau. And that's when we thought Versteeg was going to sign anyway.

That 40 point winger was released by a team in worse offensive depth than us.

That's not even enough to make the playoffs.
Course it isn't.
No. But calling a guy on CHED an idiot because he indirectly predicted the Oilers are going to miss the playoffs is a little absurd.
Sorry, it was more the breathless fanboy delivery than the actual predictions themselves.
He also predicted 92 points for McDavid.
And ftr I didn't call him an idiot.

Forgot to add ... fu Versteeg.

And claimed by a team that is better than us...

What's your point?

My point is his past offensive production that you think is still there might not be. NYI is worse off than us as far as production upfront and they still elected tp pass after seeing what he has first hand.

Maybe Chia actually has a scouting report on him?

As for NJ taking a chance...a team with less options than us upfront. Cudos. That's no indiction that we missed out on anything. They would probably suit up Gazdic right about now if he wasn't hurt
