Having players like Versteeg or Parenteau are important because they add depth and give us options for when players underperform or get hurt. Right now, Puljujarvi is going to be playing in the NHL and we don't really have any player that can replace him if he underperforms. Anyone who watched his preseason performance should see the cause for concern. It's the same mistake we made with Draisaitl two years ago. He clearly struggled but we were forced to play him for four months until we found a decent replacement (Roy). By claiming Parenteau or signing Versteeg we would have pre-emptively nixed that issue.

Do we have one player in the organization outside of our top 9 that we can feel comfortable plugging into the top 9 for significant stretches of time if injuries occur or Caggiula/Puljujarvi underperform? Our depth sucks.

I also wouldn't assume that a player can't help us just because they are on waivers. Tons of players (including Parenteau) get claimed by teams that are consistently better than us.

Slepyshev and Khaira.

Wideman first pairing? Well then...

Gio is pretty awesome though. We can't discount the impact of having him paired with anyone. He can make anyone else look good.

Obviously not drawing comparisons, but remember when Pronger made Bergeron look like a top pairing D?

But the other two pairings...

versteeg was brought in on a PTO to be THAT DEPTH guy. He chose not to be. simple as that. He didnt want to be a depth guy.

Chia is correct. depth guys are always available.

Versteeg will probably be injured again anyways.

We're in zero position to talk **** about the Flames defensemen. There are three defensemen on their roster that are better than our best dman.

I'm actually surprised not a single quality centre went through waivers this year.

I do agree with the team that Drai to the wing is the best option for the top 6 and scoring. Getting another weaker option and then moving him to the 3 hole isn't the best for the team.

How I'd love a Fayne for an overpaid #3 à la Berglund, Filppula, or even Matthias would all be a great fit.

Lucic-McDavid-Eberle
Maroon-RNH-Draisaitl
Pouliot-Berglund-Kassian

Klefbom-Larsson
Russell-Sekera
Davidson-Nurse/Gryba

Talbot

I could see that doing some damage.

Gio struggled without Brodie LAST season so I don't buy it until I see it.

Who's the third after Brodie and Giordano?

Hamilton was a tire fire to begin with and only got better when they sheltered him.

I'd take Klefbom and Larsson over him any day.

Have you seen their forwards? Stinko.

thus why Versteeg went there

add in that Godreau didnt have TC or PRe-season, and league history shows thats as good as guaranteeing 2-3 weeks injured in about T -minus the next two weeks, and Versie made a solid choice to get gravy minutes on a crap O corps.

Giordano is the only guy I see on that roster who is better than Larsson.

Might be an unpopular opinion now, but just wait til we've seen more of Larsson.

Brodie is better as well IMHO.

I may have been incorrect with my assertiion about three, but both Gio and Brodie are better than Larsson or Klef at this point.

Welp **** you Versteeg

Sounds like we straight up told Versteeg that he would likely be in and out of the lineup while the flames likely said he would have a spot for sure. Hard to blame him.

Giordano isn't even their best d-man. There is no doubting that Gioradano and Brodie are a significant step above anyone on the Oilers.

Klefbom/Larsson/Sekera are about on par with what Hamilton is now (although none of them offer the same level of offense which this team will be in desperate need of from the backend).

Wideman and Engelland have no chance against Mcdavid. Horrible idea splitting Gio and Brodie up.
