Wedgewood and Blackwood have had great play in the past, and with Blackwood he even had better stats than both our goalies until recently. He's been playing for San Jose, while both our guys have been playing behind a contender.
Utterly false, all you have to do is go to hockey reference to see this isn't true.

Blackwood the last 4 seasons up until this season, 3 with the Devils btw
.902
.892
.893
.899

Skinner the last 3 seasons before this one

.913
.913
.905

I meant for this season, where I noticed Blackwood having some rough games while Skinner has been doing much better, but even historically you are picking a mark that cuts off Blackwood's best seasons. But sure, that far in the past it does matter less. It's not like if we are searching for a goalie with no assets or cap space to spend really, that we will find an obvious upgrade. We need to look at surrounding context and to take a bit of risk

I'm curious to see if Blackwood is actually a big improvement or if there is something about the Av's defense that makes them give up a lot of goals. It will give us some insight into what is possible with the Oilers.

I'm not sure about all of the thought that goes into goalie selection either. How much of it is based on compatibility with their team's defensive style and so on.

.899 on San Jose is better than Skinner's .905 on the Oilers.

The Oilers under Knob have one of the best defensive structures in the league, San Jose is like the worst team in the league a year ago.

Imagine going from a team where you haven’t had much in the way of competitive expectations or pressure to a team that’s expecting to be a contender but has been plagued by goaltending/defensive issues and because of this you are going to be the central focus.

Thats a tough transition for someone playing the goaltender position.

I'm not crazy on the idea of Fowler.

If we can get retention, Matheson really is my guy here, as long as he or Kulak can take the right side when needed.

I know it was one viewing, but in the game against Montreal this year he just looked so poised. He was always breaking up plays and he puts up points.

I think I target a C if possible for the forward position.

As far as goaltending goes, they might have to get create like Vegas did and find that Hill type player. Someone who might start in the minors but step in as a black ace. There just doesn't seem to be many options out there if Skinner struggles in the playoffs.
I still dream of having that pure match-up center that can be tasked with shutting down other teams' big scorers.

It's nice having Henrique here, but I have some concerns that he just doesn't have the footspeed to handle that role in a seven game series.

I wonder if Nashville could be swayed to retain on Colton Sissons looking at how he's started the year. I've always been a fan of his game.

They paid a 2nd plus young 3rd liner for a goalie who, until this season in a small sample size, hadn't had a save pct. over .902 since before Covid. Yeah, I'm fine with the management not "waking up" and giving up something like Podkolzin+2nd for a tandem goalie at best. This place would have roasted Bowman for making a trade like that.

The Colorado goalie situation is also more dire and they paid a desperation price as a result.
Blackwood is talented but he hasn't done anything worth a damn in half a decade. Pretty risky at that price IMO.
He reminds me of Matt Murray. Strong start to his career, suffered a lot of injuries then never regained form.

With that said, I don't disagree that the Oilers should scour the market for a backup upgrade, somebody that can push Skinner, but I'm not giving up the price Colorado gave up to do it.

Fast forward to March - "BOWMAN IS SO STUPID NOW WE DON'T HAVE ANY PICKS FOR A D MAN BECAUSE HE WASTED IT ON A MEDIOCRE GOALIE!!!"

With almost 100% certainty this would be the narrative.

Or he gets hurt again right away...

Not worth it's own thread, but I want to shout out Iowa, who loves the Oilers more than any other US State.

Ducks have been the absolute worst team in the league for 5 plus years. And how many times have players lost interest or completely lost there game and been traded only to have there career resurrected ans or atlesdt start to have fun again and enjoy playing?
Can you inform Jeff Skinner of this? Thanks.

Especially because Henrique can play the wing. And god forbid one of our Big 2 need to sit a game or 2, then we have RNH, Henrique or the new C to play around with as options. It's such a key area to have depth.

Goals saved above expected the last three seasons:

This year: +3.9
Last year: +2.4
Year before: -0.9

Skinner:

This year: -7.0
Last year: +2.0
Year before +6.8

Pretty comparable to Skinner. Would have been nice in a tandem.
