Stauffer says he sees the Oilers trading for a player who can play the top 4 on the right side, is left handed and is more of a puckmover than a shutdown Dman..

The Avs traded for two journeymen goalies. My god, how did Jackson and Bowman miss out on that. You guys get upset over the smallest things.

Blowing a 2nd rounder on a tandem goalie at best is not the best use of assets.

Where they blew it was not making a move for Fabbro. That's something to bitch about.
Both guys are upgrades on Pickard at minimum. Skinner is not a top tier starter and Pickard is not a top tier back-up/1B goalie. If we are sticking with Stu, we need an upgrade on Pickard at minimum. Both Wedgewood and Blackwood are exactly that.
Downplay Hill lmao? What's to play up?

He was a backup in SJ and their 7th option. He was a desperation filler, nothing more when they git him

Making that trade sound like an act of some genuis foresight for the GM is just plane dishonest
Vegas were smart enough to have 3 NHL goalies that season so that when injuries and poor play hit they had Hill chomping at the bit. We have Stu then Pickard and then a massive drop off to Rodrigue (I'm guessing, we've never really given him a chance) and then definitely a drop off to Delia. Ideally Pickard would be our #3.

I don’t see Detroit trading Talbot, he’s going to be their veteran tandem guy as they bring Cossa along.

If they fall too far back though, I could see Lyon being a target for the Oilers if he can get healthy in the second half.

I really think their best option is trying to pry Ian Clark out of Vancouver. If the rumours of him being disgruntled there are true, the Oilers should go hard after him. I don’t think you can trade coaches in the NHL but they could release him from his deal, Oilers hire him and give them something for future considerations.

Instead of trying to shuffle through goalies hoping you finally hit on one, just go get a guy who’s got a track record of making goalies.

I didn't see it mentioned here yet but apparently the ducks tried to send Fower back the other way in the Trouba deal but Drury said no.

Just proves that Fowler has negative value around the league at his cap. Makes you wonder what his cap hit would need to be for another team to consider him a positive asset. I still don't think the acquisition cost would be high even if Anaheim retained 3.25M.

Fabbro at 2.5M went for nothing on waivers and didn't have the 2nd year attached. So maybe like a 4th or 5th round pick?

Doesn't seem like the all in move we want to use our precious cap space for.

i'm hoping for a bigger upgrade than Fowler, even at half price (3.25), is he better than Kulak? For sure, he's better than Stetch/Dermott/Emberson, but is that really the bar they are trying to achieve?

As for the goalie upgrade, I think the best route is search out teams with young goalies who look like they might be ready but have a major road block in their way (great starter locked up long term, like SJ did with Askarov). If you gamble on one or two or six, maybe eventually they find one. My guess would be that we do not see an upgrade during the season.

I haven't watched much of Lyon. Is he an upgrade on Pickard? The numbers look okay over the past few years. A nice added bonus is if they ate half his contract he would only be $450,000 on the cap compared to Pick's 1 mil. Gives a little more room for other upgrades.

It likely depends alot on how Husso does this next 15-18 games he plays. In his first game back Husso played really well. In his second game he got pulled after the first period in favor of a rookie that shouldn't be playing yet. Right now Yzerman looks to have his goalie of the future in Cossa, but who knows right.

Skinner is like 60 something in goals saved above expected. He was like 37th last year. He has been the worst goalie to play atleast 20 games or more in the playoffs in the cap era. Facts don’t align with your assessment (again)
Using GSAA/60 (fairer than just GSAA) and using a minimum of 400 mins for the current season and 1,000 mins for the prior season.

Skinner ranked 31st in 2023/24 and 48th in the 2024/25 season, but also not an irrelevant caveat is he is currently the 37th highest paid goalie in the league.

Given how the team is currently trending and his play is trending I think he can again outperform his salary. as in he will be better than 37 other goalies by the time the season ends.

Lyon---steady is the best adjective for him. Not the highs and lows of Skinner. Can be counted on for more than 1 game at a time unlike Pickard.
But will never likely put up .915 over a long term. Will never likely be a full time starter. But 35 games spelling Skinner with a +.900 absolutely.
Would suggest we get a defense first RD for him on the third pair.

If Stan Bowman did something like this...

Eks--Bouch
Nurse -- Provorov (retained and costly)
Kulak -- Kovacevic (goodbye Janmark)(he moves up with Nurse for Dzone faceoffs and Pk's)
Emberson (who needs to continue to improve at headmaning the puck plus needs more confidence)

Skinner
Lyon

I would think alot more of Stan (the inheritor of a team basically built by Tallon). Right now i think Stan is just a guy that plays with cap numbers a bit.
One of Stecher or Emberson would be gone in the Provorov deal along with a Prospect (I know if I'm CBJ GM i would chose Sammy O'Really) and some picks. Obviously Dermott is waived--why isn't he waived already?
Our goalies would shine. 2nd pair can transition like nobodies business and Take time from the first pair for the first two periods keeping Eks/Bouch fresher for the third period push. The third pair likely plays 18 mins plus.
Hopefully two of Jarventie, Philp, Savoie push hard for spots at or before the deadline. Kane coming back will soften the loss of Janmark.
These changes would negate Vegas being able to use their D pressure to overwhelm us and keep them from Isolating Nurse into fighting or violence that puts him in the penalty box or suspended.

It is an irrelevant caveat. He was an RFA half way through the last season of his deal with 33 career games under his belt when he signed that deal. Comparing that salary to a league wide list where a large percentage of those contracts were signed by goalies who were UFAs with much longer track records is meaningless.

2RW starting to be a question mark.
RV looking more and more like a bandaid/LTIR product. Kasperi once he gets comfortable will show you the definition of floater. And Savoie with no center to feed him and still working the south side might not be ready this year.

The problem is that at Blackwood's cap hit he would pretty much be your only move if he was replacing Pickard. You would have been adding $1.5M on the cap. That would eat up all of the team's space and more once Kane is healthy. If he is not your starter there is no upside in that.

Pickard's started 9 games and he has won 6. 2 of those losses the Oilers got shutout. His only real stinker was vs Chicago. As a back-up at $1M he is doing his job. If the Oilers are going to use all their beens to upgrade in net it better be for a guy that they expect will be an upgrade on Skinner.

The argument you are making is an argument as to the ability of a GM in Holland who isn't even here anymore to negotiate good value contracts, my argument is speaking to the cap efficiency of the player relative to his contract on a team that obviously has a limited amount of cap space and also a limited amount of trade chips with which to tweak and/or fix the roster for this upcoming playoffs.

My argument isn't that there isn't better goalies who are cheaper, merely that for all the bitching and moaning that is occurring Skinner is performing roughly in line with what we are paying him and the majority of fixes are more expensive and if they aren't more expensive the goalie likely has less playoff experience or recent poor playoff experience e.g. Talbot.

Using the same parameters Blackwood was 46th in 2023/24 and in the 2024/25 season he is 19th and he is the 42nd highest paid goalie.

So Skinner was better by a decent margin last season and significantly worse this season, though it should be obvious to everyone at this point we are a team that starts slow.

Also of note Blackwood has zero NHL playoff experience, Skinner has played in 35 NHL playoff games.

I'm not crazy on the idea of Fowler.

If we can get retention, Matheson really is my guy here, as long as he or Kulak can take the right side when needed.

I know it was one viewing, but in the game against Montreal this year he just looked so poised. He was always breaking up plays and he puts up points.

I think I target a C if possible for the forward position.

As far as goaltending goes, they might have to get create like Vegas did and find that Hill type player. Someone who might start in the minors but step in as a black ace. There just doesn't seem to be many options out there if Skinner struggles in the playoffs.

Yes but I'm not giving up a 2nd+Podkolzin (Kovalenko comp) for a backup upgrade/tandem goalie.

You have to admire Colorado's aggression. They don't let a problem just fix itself

I hope our management wakes up about this.
They paid a 2nd plus young 3rd liner for a goalie who, until this season in a small sample size, hadn't had a save pct. over .902 since before Covid. Yeah, I'm fine with the management not "waking up" and giving up something like Podkolzin+2nd for a tandem goalie at best. This place would have roasted Bowman for making a trade like that.

The Colorado goalie situation is also more dire and they paid a desperation price as a result.
Blackwood is talented but he hasn't done anything worth a damn in half a decade. Pretty risky at that price IMO.
He reminds me of Matt Murray. Strong start to his career, suffered a lot of injuries then never regained form.

With that said, I don't disagree that the Oilers should scour the market for a backup upgrade, somebody that can push Skinner, but I'm not giving up the price Colorado gave up to do it.
