I don't disagree that the Oilers are going to need to take these types of low cost gambles to fill out their depth, particularly at forward, on the cheap.

But in regards to Kostin, it's important to look at the player without the rose-colored glasses. He's struggling and there's a lot of evidence that he's a player with a very limited game. He needed playing time with our skill guys the first time around to score at that rate and we have a significantly deeper roster on wing than we had his first go around. He doesn't PK, he's known for taking bad penalties and it's easy to see him falling out of favour if the plan is throwing him out there with our fourth line.

If I'm throwing out the 5th and the 6th that @Fourier is suggesting it would cost, I think I prefer using that trade capital targeting an upgrade at 4C. Jake Evans is a player who makes a similar salary and brings a lot more to the table. Kostin just doesn't add much to this roster for me to be willing to spend the picks.
I am not sure you are getting Jake Evans with double retention at that price. I think he costs you closer to what they paid for Bjugstad which was Kesselring and a 3rd just to get Montreal onside. YOu will then need another pick/prospect for the third team if you want the additional space. I also think there is a good chance that by the deadline Philp will have the 4C spot permanently.

To be clear I am not advocating that Kostin be a prime target right now. Though if the cost really was as low as I expect I would be fine with that deal at $500K on the cap.

If you trade for Provorov, odds are you're looking at making the room to extend him at around $6m AAV. He's still young enough to give you good seasons for the majority of a long term extension. And he gives you all of what you lost with Broberg, but also a more refined game.

Provorov is interesting because he's had some questions regarding the consistency of his game. There are reasons why he may not be asking for the moon on an extension. And as a deadline add, his cap hit will be significantly less than anyone else of significance on the likely D market.
There's NO chance he signs. He's staring at the Southern US and would absolutely not sign in Edmonton.

Again, there are just other options, especial spending that kind of capital. Jake Walman is a very interesting option, Detroit dumped him, but he's playing great hockey this year and has a solid cap hit.

Kostin is proof that this fanbase just needs to see you pop a couple goals and punch a few faces and there'll forever be a lore of how effective you are as a player.

Kostin is alright as a depth guy, but he needs to be given an opportunity to show any sort of positive contribution. And I think that he's had a difficult time finding a coach that trusts him enough to give him that consistent shot.

If he was willing to come back next season on a PTO or league min deal, absolutely. But I don't see the role he takes on a playoff roster, so why spend the assets?
Agree. Agree so much!

If the last playoff run taught me anything, it's that the entire lineup needs to be able to play a 200 foot game or you're gonna get exposed. A player like Kostin would have gotten torn to shreds by the Panthers.

His problem is the role he should be taking is in the top 6, but he can't be trusted to play there, so they have to give him less minutes, and he ends up being a skill guy miscast down the lineup.

There is no way Knoblauch would let Kostin within 20 feet of the top 6, and he doesn't fit in the bottom 6.... so why would he be on the team?

Boob tube medi chicken said the Oilers may do something small on the defence in the short term to help the team. But both him and Seravalli say we are going to make an Ekholm like move closer to the deadline

I definitely don't think we'd be getting Evans for that price. But I'm suggesting that we have a limited number of tradeable assets and spending two of them for a player in addition to what it takes to address the more necessary areas would add up.

Like I mentored when Carcone was brought up, I'd rather we get to make those picks. And if Philp turns out being an effective C at this point in his career, out-freaking-standing.

And if Walman can play effective minutes on the right side of the ice, he'd absolutely be an option.

Kassian would have been a god here if he signed that inflated contract with another team.
