The funny/sad thing is that Dean has always been very conservative at the draft table and literally the one time he rolled the dice in round 1 he ended up taking Hickey over Alzner.

Every other first round pick he has made as Kings GM has been considered a pretty safe low upside pick.

These things happen, though. That draft year wasn't very good as far as standout choices. Dean saw a lot of leadership qualities he liked in Hickey and rolled the dice. A lot of people weren't surprised with this pick. You can't really even call Hickey a bust. He is doing fairly well with the Isles.

Exactly. During the Cup Run, we ran around. Richards' leveled Burrows in the first round. King and Nolan fought Crombeen and Stewart in the St. Louis Series. Penner headlocked Vermette and Brown destroyed Rozival in the Phoenix series. In the finals, Nolan was laying everyone out, same with Martinez who had one of the biggest hits of the playoffs.

Where are those plays?

Now Brown, Torres, Thornton, Burns, and Desjardens are taking runs at Quick and Kopitar and no one is doing anything.

This is exactly the point I made the other day. I have a feeling that it could be a combination of a couple things. It is natural to see a letdown when you win the Cup. I'll grant them that. I'm actually more surprised to see it from Richards than Brown. Brown turned into a freaking superhuman beast in the 2012 cup run. Richards has always been at another level in the playoffs. They've been duds all year and into the playoffs...if it is not for physical reasons, then you definitely need to jettison these guys.

Oh definitely, if they were going to reach for Hickey at #4, then they definitely could have taken a bigger gamble and gone for a prospect who could be a potential elite forward, which is exactly what Voracek and Couture were touted as in their draft year.

The Sharks traded up to the #8 spot to draft Couture and they got one of the best players in that draft. I guess it worked out for the Kings in 2005 though when the Sharks passed on Kopitar to select Setoguchi.

Yeah, I know a lot of teams are kicking themselves for not looking at Kopitar closer. I wonder if we did take Alzner we'd be content with him? He's turned out pretty much as expected, but then when you look a few of the other defensemen that've come through the 2007 draft , a few really stand out.

As much as I like him, but maybe it's time for a new voice and a new style of play. Sutter just might have to go.

John Stevens may be hired to become a head coach elsewhere this summer, so the Kings may be forced to make a coaching change.

I wouldn't mind seeing Mark Hardy back behind the bench. Not very fond of Davis Payne and Sutter's reasoning as to why he hired him (because he coached in the Western Conference in the past).

I wish Sutter trusted his rookies like some of the other coaches do. He flat out said he won't play two rookies when he doesn't get the last change on the road. Yet last night, Pearson looked really comfortable out there as well as Toffoli.

He said he wouldn't play 2 rookies on the same line on the road.

I doubt Hardy can come back. Too much bad press.

If the Caps fire Adam Oates, he could be a pretty good offensive strategist if he's interested in taking an assistant coaching gig. He was an assistant with the Lightning and with the Devils and I thought he did a damn good job in that role. It seems like some coaches are better as assistants than head coaches. See Tony Granato as an example of this.
