In early January, I arrived in Adler and went to a hockey game, seeing how the local Sochi club presented a new team logo. The leopard remained, but the emblem became more symbolic. Now the face of the big cat is a construction set that contains all the natural features of the southern region: waves, palm trees, mountains. Minnesota has something similar in the NHL, and such an emblem always attracts the attention of fans. So, on the very first day, when the new logo appeared in the match between Sochi and Metallurg (2:3 OT), as much as one million rubles worth of merchandise was sold out!
And I also saw Matvey Michkov score his next goal. Having returned to the lineup after a serious illness (pneumonia is no joke!), the 19-year-old Sochi forward scored two goals in two matches. Moreover, he hit the gates of such serious teams as Salavat Yulaev and Metallurg. And these are the leaders of the East.
It’s a shame, of course, that these days I’m watching Michkov in the KHL championship. I would much rather see Matvey as captain of the Russian national team at the World Youth Championship. I am sure that our boys in Gothenburg would tear everyone apart!
But the International Hockey Federation (IIHF) again did not allow us, and today Sweden - Czech Republic and USA - Finland meet there in the semi-finals. As they said in one classic movie: “In his place it should have been me...”
From this interview with Matvey Michkov you will learn:
- what the forward thinks about Sochi’s game lately;
- about his reaction to the Youth World Championships in Gothenburg;
- why our Demidov is stronger than the Canadian Celebrini;
- about showdowns with the “Cupid” player and about simulations in the game;
- Michkov would have been able to compete in the NHL this season.
— I watched the match with Magnitogorsk - Sochi played normally, you were close to winning (2:3 OT).
- Yes, it was a good match. Great atmosphere, a lot of fans came. What can I say? You need to be more calm about your moments, and everything will be fine. We have enough of these moments. We don’t score, but the opponent scored - that’s all, that’s our problem.
— Sochi in this game did not look like a team that suffered 11 defeats in a row. We could win now.
“But we are still missing something.” We will work, no one gives up. All our victories are ahead. God grant there will be many of them this season. We will do everything possible for this.
— Tell us how you went to lacrosse. They almost scored against Magnitka with their signature trick.
“At that moment I found myself outside the gate. I think: “Let me try lacrosse.” I decided to do it, but it didn’t work out. It's okay, it's hockey. Things don't always work out. But you need to strive to ensure that everything always works out.
— After returning to the squad, you scored two goals in two matches. It didn't take much time to get going.
— I really miss hockey. Missed the KHL All-Star Game. It boiled somewhere in the depths of my soul. Therefore, I returned with great emotions and great pleasure.
— It’s a shame that you caught pneumonia right before going to the star show in St. Petersburg.
- That's life. It doesn't always work out the way you want. Therefore, we must cope with all difficulties with our heads raised and move on.
- Where did you get so sick? Is it drafty in Sochi?
— Honestly, I don’t know. But I wasn’t the only one who suffered from this, there were other people too. Some kind of virus is going around, I think. That’s where I was unsuccessfully hooked.
— How do you assess your season overall? You are the second scorer for Sochi, scoring 29 (13+16) points in 32 matches.
“We need to strive to have a lot more points.” As well as team victories. We are working on it. To say that you are satisfied with your statistics... You know, you will always be dissatisfied with something. There is a lot to improve. I won’t reveal all the nuances, but there are some aspects that still require a lot of work.
— Do you still work with a personal trainer who analyzes your shifts on the ice?
- Yes, I study them after the match - or when I come home, I try to review my games.
— Are you watching the World Youth Championship? Interesting events are happening there; the Czechs knocked out the Canadians in the quarterfinals.
— I watched this match when Canada played the Czech Republic (2:3). I also saw Slovakia - Finland (3:4 OT). My friend Dalibor Dvorski played there for the Slovaks. I wanted to watch him. His team fought great. But, unfortunately, she lost in overtime.
Well, I don’t know... Of course, without the Russian team these matches are more boring. And the competition has become much less. After all, Russia has always been ranked among the top three teams at many youth world championships.
Of course, I really want to return to the international arena. Unfortunately, not everything depends on us. And any political affairs do not concern us. Our task is to just go out on the ice and play hockey.
— Many North American media made up their own versions of what the Russian team could be like at this World Cup. Whatever the lineup, it's the Dream Team. Do you understand that we could have a crazy team?
- Yes, sure! We, born in 2004, beat everyone. In reality, there is not a single match with a defeat. We beat everyone. We had a great team with a strong spirit. And if we had competed at this youth world championship, we would have won it.
— You look at your peers from other teams. Are they doing something incredible? I understand that Connor Bedard played a year ago - there are no questions about him. And now?
— I heard about the Canadian McLean Celebrini. I watched his games. Well... Nice guy born in 2006. He is somewhere at the top of the list of MFM scorers. But for me, the first pick of the future NHL draft is Vanya Demidov. And he is not just the first, but certainly the first. I can't have any other options.
— Do you communicate with Demidov? Otherwise, fate scattered you across different cities.
- Of course yes. And our birthdays come one after another. For me it’s December 9th, for him it’s December 10th. First he called me with congratulations, then I called him. We said a lot of kind words to each other. We have a very close relationship, we communicate very well.
— Do you feel that you have become stronger over the year? Last season in Sochi you scored 20 (9+11) points in 27 matches.
- Of course, I understand that I added. I began to play more confidently. I can spend as much time on the court as the coach gives me. Regardless of whether it's a lot or a little. I began to feel calmer about all moments. I behave more restrained, and this only benefits me.
— Not so long ago there was a moment when 27-year-old Amur player Sergei Lapin took you off for hitting you with a stick, and then accused you of simulation and even challenged you to a fight: “Stop falling, it doesn’t look good on you.” You answered: “You broke my lip. This is my job". How did you react to that episode?
- This is a game moment, hockey. I don't react at all. In life, I have no complaints about Lapin. Well, yes, there was a surge of emotions there. On the contrary, it's good. This is what makes us play and move forward.
- Yes, you behaved with restraint there.
— You always want to play in the majority so that your team can score more goals. And if your opponent actually hits you in the face with his stick, it’s better to record it so that the referee can see it too. Of course, in hockey you don't need to fake it. You must always stand on your feet. But there are moments when you can play for the team.
— You are watching the highlights of Philadelphia, which selected you in the draft. Theoretically, could you compete at the NHL level this season? Bedard fit in well with Chicago. Or would you be sent to the AHL?
— No matter what league I play in, I don’t like to lose. I believe that competition with Bedard would have paid off for me. I don't think I would have given in to him.
— Do you see how the fans in Philadelphia react to your goals for Sochi? They are heatedly discussing you on social networks.
— To be honest, I’ve been out of these social networks lately. I try to spend more time without my phone. But apparently the fans are watching and writing, this is understandable.
- Tampa defender Mikhail Sergachev deleted his social network account with pictures - and began to look at life completely differently. Do you have the same effect?
— I didn’t delete my account. I come in periodically and post something. But I began to go there less often than before, when I constantly sat and scrolled the feed.
— Is there an option that you will leave for the NHL earlier than 2026? Your contract in the KHL is valid until this time.
— To be honest, I’m not ready to answer these questions yet. Because I don’t know myself. Yes, I have a valid contract with SKA. Therefore, you must comply with all its requirements.
— If Sochi doesn’t make it to the playoffs, where will you play next?
- I don’t decide here. I don't own these issues. As they tell me, I will do so. In this situation, nothing depends on me.
— I meant that you will be sent to the MHL again to play for “Captain”? It seems to me that you have outgrown this level. And last year it was not successful.
— Go to Stupino? This season is harder than last. So I don't know. A year ago I played only 30 matches. Or even 27, if you don’t take into account three games for SKA, when I didn’t play much. Now they may be over 50. Therefore, I don’t know what my physical condition will be. Let's start from this. And we have to wait until the end of February.
— I noticed that you started throwing more this season. Have you set yourself the goal of attacking the goal more often? More shots - more goals?
- Not certainly in that way. In the first season, when I played for Sochi, I tried to throw more. And now I’m trying to interact with my partners more often so that they also enjoy hockey. And when I have a more advantageous position, I try to shoot for a goal myself.
But I won’t say that I’m throwing a lot this season. I think last year it was much more. And now what’s more important to me is not the quantity, but the quality of throws. You need to make the most of every moment. If your partner is in an advantageous position, why not pass the ball?
— Which new rules in the KHL do you like best?
— To be honest, apart from the rule about crossing the red line in the warm-up, I didn’t remember anything this season. Because I got hit with it three times. And this is very well etched in my memory.
And everything is the same. Well, the majority of face-offs, when you come out after the break, are now not in the neutral zone, but in someone else’s zone. This is also, of course, an advantage for us who play in attack. A very good rule - and I think that because of this there are more goals.
