Physical RHDs are coveted, look what TB paid for Savard to be their 6th D-man in the playoffs.
Risto was in demand, no one wanted Ghost for free.

Oh so that must mean Risto is really really good and totally worth more than Ellis. Right?

Just because someone is in demand because many GMs are dinosaur fools, we should pay heavily for them regardless of their actual quality? They're automatically worth it?

Savard called playing for the Habs a childhood dream. He wasn’t signing here.

I’d rather have Ristolainen anyway. More upside. Meanwhile, there are legitimate concerns about Savard slowing down.

I’ve never experienced this level of ire directed at a Flyer before he even plays a game for them.

And people thought I was bad with Ghost….

Do you think a player can completely and totally change after 500 games to become an entirely different and far more effective player?

Because if you do believe that then it makes your stances on Sanheim and Ghost even worse.

I think you should change your tag line from “Meat Overlord” to “World’s Foremost Ristolainen Expert.”

I see you can't answer my question. Interesting.

You don't need to be an expert to understand that he sucks and isn't going to morph into a brand new player. Might as well sign Yakupov for five mil and hope he turns into a 50 goal scorer.

We are not getting a mystery box. We are getting a guy who was a major reason why Buffalo has been Buffalo.

Risto is going to be solid and probably surprise a ton of people. Of course, it’ll all be attributed to Sanheim because he can’t do any wrong

i peedict he gets a 5+ game suspension early in the season..

hes going to be looking for big hits to make a statement in Philly..

the refs will see the result, AND that hes wearing OnB..

bango, instant suspension...

I flatly disagree with your premise. I don’t believe Risto has to “completely and totally change” in order to be effective.

But, then again, I haven’t watched Risto nearly as regularly & closely over the last seven seasons as you apparently have.

I always will give a player a chance. Not expecting Risto to all of a sudden regain his pre-draft aura.....but it would certainly be nice if our backend at least put the grind on guys. Him and Morin in games where we need a bit more bigger bodies, and an aggressive attitude. If he can let Sanheim do his thing, while reducing his past stupidity a bit, while still adding that physical element (then we could be ok). Will he get eaten up in AV's system? Possibly. Will he be worse here then Buffalo? I don't think so (I think anyone that leaves there will go on to have better seasons). Did we over pay? Yup. Was it detrimental to our pool/team? Nah. Am I keep my expectations low? Pretty much.

Ristolainen does have to drastically change as a player to be effective.

You're right. You haven't watched him enough. It really doesn't take in-depth viewing to notice that he's generally a nightly trainwreck.

There is no shortage of Buffalo fans who watched him a lot and agree completely. I'm guessing that doesn't count for some reason.

You guys learned nothing when we tried this with MacDonald.

It was a shame that Larsson went to Seattle on such a good deal too. Him and Sanheim would have been an amazing pair. Imagine 4-5 mil x 4 for Larsson instead of overpaying in assets and salary for Ristolainen.

He'll, I'd have been fine with paying an extra mil to Larsaon if it meant:

A) some contract control/cost certainty
B) not paying assets to acquire
C) not commiting to a bad long term contract because of a sunk cost fallacy

Ooh baby. The sunk cost fallacy is going to absolutely come in play to justify the move. How fun…

Savard was signed even cheaper than Larsson and is also better than Risto. Chuck just can't help himself when it comes to filling what he considers essential needs and has to go the trade route rather than UFA route. That said, better options also existed on the trade market.

All we can do now is hope. As i've said before, Risto gets a clean slate with me. I won't punish him for the sins committed with another organization.

Lots of just assumptions though. You guys act like you're in the boardroom, just assuming if you write a cheque every player wants to come here. Or every team is just open trading certain guys / and that said guy is 100% on board as well. We have literally no idea who he talked to, what the costs were, what the convos were. I do know Fletch was probably the busiest guy based on overall activity, and likely was on the phone with more teams/players than most would normally in an off-season. Savard was cheap as you mentioned and signed with his childhood team. Logic would normally dictate that he got less money to do so (which likely would have lead to a larger contract/term) elsewhere. My assumption was that they wanted someone much tougher on that backend, and the options for that to play in the top4 were probably minimal at best.

All they need from Risto is to be a solid 2nd pairing RHD who provides the D & team with a much-needed physical presence.

I don’t think he’s incapable of that. He has a lot of physical ability. Worst-case scenario is he’s a more skilled, much more physical Myers.

Worst case scenario is way worse than Myers. Myers was at least cheap. Risto is not, so he's not just an anchor but an impediment to adding better players to boot.

And Risto "only" becoming 2nd pair quality is still a massive leap for him. You're expecting an awful lot.

A player needs to do more than chase hits to be worthwhile.

I guess this is technically true since he traded a 5th for Hayes.

I'm ok with making a trade and paying the price when you have a specific target. But this is Fletcher's team now. This was his make or break off-season. So we better have a good season.
