If we would be lucky winn 1 pick what would lines with bedard look like next season ?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

What would I like to see if we spike a good lottery.......

Skinner-Tage-Tuch
Peterka-Cozens-Quinn
Mitts-Bedard-Greenway
?????-Krebs-Girgensons

Fire Olofsson into the sun. Jost could be fine with Krebs and Girgensons, though I'd like someone a bit better.

I think it'd be important to staple Greenway to Bedard at least at first -- give the line a plus defensive player and a bit of physical protection. Mitts and Greenway can grind the boards while Bedard works himself open.

You and others keep equating young players with every player on the roster. There are guys like Power and Samuellson you know have upside and then there is Bryson, who is not going anywhere. He's horrible.

Then there is the crowd that demanded Chychrun. There is a whole world in between long-term deals signed in Philadelphia and Detroit and short-term deals that leave Bryson and Clague mostly as 8 or 9 guys barely playing.

Klingberg cost nothing in terms of picks and some salary pickup, and, shockers, he's playing well in Minnesota. Luke Schenn gives you depth for a nothing 3rd rounder. What would the Sabres do with Shayne Gostisbehere when we have Bryson ready to go?

There is also the little matter of $18+ in cap room. There were multiple teams that took cap room and got 3rd, 4th and 5ths in return. Those picks could have been flipped and given the team a slight push with zero impact on the future.

I, for one do not want long-term deals with aging players, but 1-2 years deals were fine because the cap crunch is actually not until 2024-2025 when Dahlin and Power's new contracts would have to kick.

You want to buy into a narrative that guys like Bryson/Clague are being blocked. Go ahead. It's a lie. You wanna buy into the team couldn't have signed a real centre short term, go ahead. Instead we cheaped out on Vinnie Hinostoza.

If we are $15 M plus below the cap next year with the same goalies and mostly the same, will you see a problem or a missed opportunity?

Yes, zero reason to have not found cheap replacements for Clague/Bryson. Goalie would have been tough at deadline and maybe required real talent going the other way. One of two depth required 3rd and 4ths.

Klingberg was a train wreck in Anaheim and has never been known as a good defensive player

I'm intrigued by the Greenway addition as much as anyone but I fail to see in his repertoire how he is the physical forward thats gonna change things for us. He's basically the forward version of Tyler Myers in terms of physicality.

What do you think Bryson is on defence and offence? Focus was on Chychrun but we should have upgraded Bryson and Clague with NHL-level scrubs. Those two are 7,8,9 guys in your depth chart

I'm not trading for the minor upgrade of Bryson to Klingberg. It would literally be a waste of an asset. Stillman literally is only saved from this category by the fact he's still young and has a physical edge we need.

I mean he’s not flying around like Pat Kaleta but he does use his big frame to win pucks on the forecheck, protect the puck, and cause chaos around the crease. It’s not like he shies away from contact whatsoever

Stillman is 25 and worth almost nothing. His cap hit at $1.35 M probably makes him worthless to most cap-strapped teams in the league. Fringe D-man with caps above the league minimum are worthless mostly. Bryson could be waived, and no one touches him. Then again, all we gave up was Josh Bloom who is a guy that likely doesn't make the NHL and proves once again that most 3rd picks are useless and overrated. There is always an outlier Brayden Point but you swing and miss consistently in the third.

The Sabres were on the cusp of the playoffs and for some nothing picks, even a 3rd. 4th or 5th, could have maybe added some depth. And if management had opened up some wallets, we could have used cap room to get the picks needed for the depth and but out nothing but maybe $1 M or so.

Instead, we came up short in key games against Edmonton and the Islanders where our 3rd pair was on the ice way too much. But maybe people like Bryson and Clague? I don't know. You can't count on your top six always being healthy on D. You need a half decent 7th guy and maybe some AHL guy in his early 20s who can come up as rookie. We have zero on D in Rochester worthy of a call up and AHL guys playing in the NHL some night.

Needed to be dealt at deadline .
Totally should have been trying to get an asset for Olofsson and improving the team by subtraction.

Alot of people on this board just look at his goals scoring as his impact on winning. He has an overall negative effect on winning, so much so that he cannot outscore his deficiencies with a 30 goal year. Those kinds of imbalanced players will kill you. One offense only player on a line with one defense only player does NOT equal two balanced two-way players. It just doesn't work that way.

If we start the next season with Olofsson and Bryson still on the team, I will start and pound the drum on the fire KA thread.

he is definitely more physical than that, he finishes his checks, he is just not a bruiser or dirty player.

for sure, and I definitely see that. If you scroll back you'll see people talking about the Tampa game and the physical impact he'd make etc and I'm not really seeing it. I feel like people around here are confusing adding TKO Stillman and Greenway as adding Reaves etc.

To be more to the point this team needs truculence like Kaleta....like 2 or 3 of them lol. This addition didn't address that at all but people see that he's a big guy and assume it did. I feel like thats being lost here.

i really like Greenway as a player and was stoked about the trade. But it didnt address the team need aforementioned at all imo.

So this summer we get rid of: Okposo, Jost, Hinostroza, Clague, Anderson, Bishop, Hodgson, Pilut, Subban .

Only one I want resigning is Girgensons and maybe Jost to cheap price .

What could we get for 1 round pick 2024, 2 rounder 2023, Olofsson this summer ?

Any chance we trade these pick and sort out the top 4 d position and the goalie situation ?

Think we are a playoff team when improving these positions . Or is there any free agents That can sort these problems ?

Skinner Thompson Tuch
Peterka Cozens Quinn
Mittlestadt Krebs Greenway
Girgensons Jost or replacement, Replacement for Okposo

Dahlin Samuelsson
Power top 4 d add
Jokiharju Lyubuskhin
Stillman Bryson

Goalie add
UPL
Trade Comrie

None of Kulich Savoie Rosen Ostlund Johnson that gonna crack the lineup ?

Rosen Will he play the 3 season after drafted in NHL or season after in the 4 th ? Would be latest season after That ?

The impending 0-6 since the trade deadline feels exactly correct. Good work addressing those needs created by your own previous inactivity, Kev. Fight nothing with nothing. It’s cheaper that way.

Should the Sabres trade for Schmaltz? Quite a lot of real money coming up in his contract and that usually means that the yotes needs to get rid of him. Would improve center depth quite a bit?

There are some interesting tidbits that point both to the Sabres having some interest and others that point to the Sabres having no interest.

Schmaltz has played for both Granato (Team USA and with the Blackhawks) and Appert (2017 WCs). He has also been teammates with guys like Tuch, Boosh, and Hinostroza.

One big negative is that his base salary is backloaded and it will be more than his cap hit for the remainder of his deal. That could be an issue with the Sabres, along with the roster fit.

Maybe if they want to get him to replace VO. But, my guess is that they want a kid like Kulich to do that.

Undersized career 41% faceoff guy. Looks like a lot of what we have a lot of already. Hard pass.

Raise the bar.
