Fox, McAvoy, and Makar all came in between 9-9.5 AAV, and they have all received Norris votes in multiple seasons and have multiple All-star games, what makes you think Dahlin will come in so much higher than them?
Many people also forget Fox signed his deal a couple months after he won the Norris in 20-21. The Doughty and Karlsson deals are more the exception than the rule given both were contracts that comprised entirely UFA years.

Absolutely no reason for Power to take that. Try 8/64 minimum. More likely, IMO, he gets a 3-year bridge in the 5.5-6 range.

Also I don't think Dahlin is going to come in nearly that high. Somewhere in the 10-10.5 AAV range.
Everyone hates the bridge deal but the player gets to bet on himself while maybe not completely already earning the payday. The team keeps control while offering the gesture that they believe in the player without over extending long term. Player goes into the bridge under performing the contract and hopefully comes out over performing. Everyone is happy.

We don't generally see the jump from ELC to big long term deals unless the player is coming out of their ELC already performing at that level. We can all see the potential but Power is not at that level yet. Bridge is the way to go here.

Does Kane wanna play for Buffalo next season? Any indications he Will sign in Buffalo ? I dont say we need him But if he wants and for lower cap he could take Olofsson spot on the 3 line
I think Chain noted in the mains that a smaller scoring winger would become redundant pretty quickly which makes a ton of sense.

Gives them better potential to retain the player for more years also. Get that big 8 year deal after the bridge and you got 2 or 3 more years of that player on your team, all while pushing the bigger payday out past when the Skinner deal expires.

I think we all got a little sour on bridge deals with Reinhart but management played that poorly. We should have locked him up. It's a good tool when used correctly.

I could see Power doing 6 years, max. He is capping his salary playing behind Dahlin, and eventually may want to get #1D money even if its with another team. He won't be a top-10 salary D on Buffalo, basically.

8/100. You have your top 2 D and top 2 C for under 34 mil. Before their deals are up 2 elite players will cost nearly that much.
Power 8/52 this summer immediately after taking care of Dahlin 8/100. You have your top 2 D and top 2 C for under 34 mil. Before their deals are up 2 elite players will cost nearly that much.

You don't give Power an 8 year deal yet. He hasn't earned it. There is absolutely zero reason to rush a deal for him, he's a 10.2 RFA, meaning he can't receive offersheets.

In an ideal world, we follow the McAvoy path and he gets a 3 year bridge and we sign him to a long term deal with a year left on his bridge.

We just did this with Dahlin and it’s going to cost them millions and millions of dollars more than if they could have signed him long term the first time.

”Hasn‘t earned it yet” is backwards thinking. Had Tage earned 50 million yet? Had Cozens? The new NHL model is identifying which young players are going to be great and paying them before they are.

Your Andrew Peters way of thinking leads to Tage making 11 million dollars, Dahlin getting his giant new deal after a bridge, Cozens getting bridged as if that’s going to work out financially long term and waiting until Power can match Dahlin’s resume and ask for his deal.

Its not smart business.

You think Power has much chance of busting? Or not being a play driving force that he already is as a rookie?

Getting an elite d-man for 11 years vs 8 years is better, full stop.

Busting? No. Is there a chance he's simply a very good top 4 d-man and not an elite norris candidate? Yes.

Again, with him not being a regular RFA, there isn't much reason to sign him to a huge deal right now. Bridge him and extend him in 3 years. 11 years > 8 years.

Salary cap going up. It's like NFL. The cap goes up and salaries go up. I dont think people are appreciating that the cap will be at 92 million in 25/26 and maybe higher than that. Do you think agents care about Bradys contracts when negotiating for their QBs? Salary cap percentage is the way to look at it. What's to stop Dahlin from doing a 2 or 3 year deal if he gets lowballed? When teams have an extra 8 million to spend is that the time to negotiate a deal?
I wouldn't be too certain about the salary cap rising that much over the next few years until the dust settles on Bally's bankruptcy. Until the NHL has more information on whether media rights payments will continue past this year, and what future payments will be, the salary cap isn't moving. And that bankruptcy may take a while to shake out.

I disagree. Bridging Dahlin was the right call and Bridging Power will be too.

If you sign Dahlin a couple years ago you may save a few AAV, but you lack certainty, and more important to me, thier contracts are up at 27-28 years old and you are looking at a huge overpay contract at 28 taking them to 36.
If you do a 3 year bridge and then an 8 year extention, you get them till they are 31ish at a reasonable AAV in the back half of thier contract. Then you can let them walk if you need to.

If Power takes 8x8, you do it.

He wouldn't be getting paid like a norris caliber defenseman if he signs long term early.

People need to move on from P.Kane
He has no ties to this city, other than the letters in his birth certificate.
It seems desperate to want someone round here who doesnt want to be here.
He is no Tuch.
He will resign with the Rangers thats were his NY ties are; he expressed that quite clearly.

If Power takes 8x8, you do it.

He wouldn't be getting paid like a norris caliber defenseman if he signs long term early.

Power isn't a norris caliber d-man yet. He's not close. He MIGHT get there, he's very talented.

There is ZERO risk waiting to NEXT year to do a deal. Zero.

Barring a herculean type leap, he's not winning the Norris on this team next year. Dahlin is going to eat all the power play minutes, so he isn't going to be able to put up the kind of numbers you need to get into consideration there.

He's a 10.2(c) RFA, meaning he has no arb right, can't be offersheeted, etc.

If you sign him to a 8 year deal whenever you can, you'll have him for 9 more years (last year of his ELC+ the 8 more years). You get him from the age of 21-29

There are three downsides here:

1. You will have his and Dahlin's contract expiring at the same time.
2. You ramp up his salary immediately.
3. Things always change. Maybe he gets sick of playing behind Dahlin, maybe he wants to be closer to family, who knows? The kids 20....he's going to be a different person when he's 27.

Now, let's look at a bridge + extension later.

A bridge is probably capped at the 6.5M or so a year. So, you pay a 3 year, 6.5M per deal.

After that, let's say he wins a Norris. You give him an 8 year, 12M per deal. Just a massive contract.

That's 11 years, 115.5 M over both deals. And it expires when he's 33. And if you REALLY want to do an apple to apples comparison, it'd be like an 8 year, 79.5 M deal. So, if you did an 8 year deal now, you'd save a bit of money.

But, the key difference is, you have a re-evaluation when he's 24 years old. You will know more about the player then, you'll see his development curve and really what his upside is. And he will know more about himself and the org. Does he WANT to stay here long term?

I think it should be a very rare thing to give out 7-8 year contracts to 20 or 21 year old players. The Eichel contract was a mistake, I thought the Samuelsson deal was a mistake ,and I think it'd be a mistake for Power. IF he becomes an elite d-man, yes there is potential cost savings. However, if he doesn't, then you are just burning cash (and cap space) before you need to.

The word is that Dahlin and his Agent didnt want to sign a max term deal when he signed his bridge so its a moot point.

Thank you! Why is everyone assuming the Team wanted him on a bridge? If you were in Dahlins shoes at the time he signed that contract would you sign here long term?

Eichel, Reinhart, Risto, McCabe and Ullmark wanted out because the org was a complete gongshow.

All your core players want out and understandably so. Dahlin saw all the terrible shit going on too, why would he want to sign here long term?

Dahlin seem to like it with the sabres, they are on the correct path . Eichel, reinhart, risto, mccabe are not Dahlin power Thompson cozens. Didnt want any of Eichel risto reinhart mcabbbe ullmark on this team . Happy they are gone

Yeah it all worked out in the end and Dahlin does love playing here.

All I am saying is I can see why he wanted to sign a bridge deal

I'll echo what others have said. "No thanks".

He's an immense talent but where he is as a hockey player doesn't fit our needs.

If Toews gets beyond long covid on the other hand and still wants to play....well have his people call our people.
He looks like he’s pretty close to cooked with the Rangers.

I don't like or want to sign Kane, but I know for a fact that if it had worked out that he could finish his career in Buffalo he would have been thrilled. It was something he talked about his whole career.

You're going to need to show receipts on that one. Far as I know, he's never once expressed a desire to play here.
