I think the concept still works. Let's say, for example, the target is Chychrun. Who are they competing with to acquire him? BOS/TOR/TBL/WSH/NYI/NYR? Etc. Almost any team you pick is ahead of the Sabres in the standings at the moment. Especially if you're talking about Boston or Toronto or Dallas as the other suitors, I think the Sabres should be able to sell Arizona on the fact that their 1st round pick is more valuable. And, as others have pointed out, the Sabres could get a few key injuries and end up in lottery territory. That's not going to happen to Boston, TB, Toronto, etc. I would be surprised if anyone (in any NHL front office) thinks to themselves, "You can't fool me Kevyn Adams. I know you're about to rapidly ascend the conference standings. Your pick, to me, is worthless!" More likely they're going to think to themselves, like most other humans would, "Hey, I could get myself a lottery pick here." And thus it feels more valuable than it might end up being.
