Less we not forget the darlings of HF trade proposals; because we know every trade must involve at least one of these....

Why would we EXTEND Horvat at the price he's likely to command?

Hold the course. Tage and Cozens are our long term top 2 centers. We can get a 3rd line center FAR FAR cheaper than Horvat.

Plus he'd blow up the cap structure that Adams is trying to build.

Horvat is a good player......but he's not right for us.
I worked out the salary structure on Capfriendly last week and it's very doable. Horvat and Chychrun is where it gets dicey.

Horvat is a veteran leader, plays a 3C type of game, and wins faceoffs. He'd be a good add. He's everything we hope Mittelstadt becomes.
I'd be hesitant on trading Krebs. I just have a feeling he's going to breakout soon.
I've posted this a few times now - that's just a listing of assets. I'm not advocating trading anyone.

I'd far, far, far rather use our resources for someone that fills long term needs. Failing that, we keep them. The absolute last thing I want to do is use assets for a rental so we can miss the playoffs by a couple points or get obliterated in 4 games if we do get in.

I know it's been a long time. Selling off prime assets for a rental this year is a complete and utter waste.
I wouldn’t use any high value assets on short term success, but I do think there is a lot of value to breaking the playoff drought and getting the young players some playoff games. I’d deal our second or a B prospect for some help at the deadline for sure if we are in the mix.

Also signals to the team that we are done losing and now trying to win. It’s a vote of confidence, which also has value imo.

......except the whole defensive aspect of a 3C type.

And if he's a 3C making ~$8M AAV, he better play defense well.
Plenty of teams are using non-traditional 3Cs and playing well. Gourde, Backlund, Pageau, Coyle are all 3Cs.

STL has Thomas as their 3C, making $8M per season.

The idea that a 3C has to play defense well is outdated. Your whole lineup has to play defense well. And if you've got an offensive star, you either play for possession or put a defensive player on the line.

Krebs - Horvat - Jost/Asplund would be a good third line.

I agree to some extent. But a team’s needs would dictate what you would look for to fill out your 3rd center spot.

I don’t see a need for a one dimensional offensive center on a team that already is the highest scoring team in the NHL. Certainly not one that would cost a fortune to sign.

I think this is less a discussion about Horvat and more of team construction.

For me, I'm perfectly ok with a player like Horvat on the third line, in the same way Pittsburgh was ok with Kessel on their third line. Thompson's line and Cozens' line will draw the majority of the tough matchups. Having Horvat (or a player with similar offensive ability) on the third line would be a matchup nightmare.

I do see the argument against this idea, and it's valid. I just think that there's a way to shape the team where the team relies on depth and possession instead of a more classic structure.

That all said, Adams is going to start to logjam forward talent in the next 24 months, so he's going to need to make some sort of quantity for quality, prospect for pro type of move.

In the summer, sign Compher, trade Olofsson for a 3rd pair D-man. Bottom six -

Mittelstadt - Krebs - Compher (Compher can play C if needed)
Asplund - Jost - Girgensons

...the things we could wish for if good UFAs ever considered Buffalo...

I hope Adams makes a move for a dman this season. He banked on our top 4 being healthy going into this season and that has not worked out. I get all the depth signings but those are not making you team that much better.

This is the year to make a move for a dman. The team is rolling and we need to keep developing Power properly. 20-30 games of him playing with Clague or Bryson is not going to help that.

It doesn’t have to be Chychrun. There has to be a few other options that could be had. Every season good defenseman get moved, sometimes at reasonable prices (Devon Toews)

Different idea: I'd love if Adams could get Helleson out of Anaheim.
For myself, I made a list of young RDs who might be interesting, Helleson is on this list. But I don't even know what Anaheim might be interested in, they are deliberately tanking and seem to want Helleson to grow into the next Manson for them.

What kind of deal is Dumba going to be looking for? 7 million a year? 8 million?
Wow, I would definitely pass, this season he seems to have played clearly less than 5 million.

Potential RDs in UFA for Sabres:

Zub
Mayfield
Clifton
Severson
Dumba
Jensen
Gudas

Gavrikov should be near the top of the list if he hits free agency. I don't care that he is left handed and I doubt the Sabres care either. They've been interested in Chychrun who is a lefty.
