I’m not really sure what point you are trying to make - NHL expanding again - at least 2 more times - in the near future is a reality.

It will impact the Isles just like the rest of the league, except they will play separate divisions
Meant in the way that there will never be a team in a location like LI.

What? I don't see how your original response and this one connect. Future expansion will not make Isles irrelevant. In locations like LI? A second team in NYC area in 1972 was a smart decision by the NHL.

The league needs to grow and markets like Houston, Atlanta, Salt Lake will help drive revenue. We are talking the business of hockey.

Another factor to consider is the expansion of the source of players. Way back when it was just Canada. Then add MA and a few states in the upper mid-west. Then SWE, RUS, FIN, CZE, etc.. And "other" Euro countries now (GER, SUI, etc.). And in the US you now have star players from AZ, CA, etc.. LI was proud of the Hansen bros getting a couple of NHL games, but now there are legit superstars from LI. So yeah, plenty of talent for more expansion.
I use to follow Richie Hansen way back when he played for the Islanders and Blackhawks farm system in Fort Worth , couldn't wait for The Hockey News to arrive he was a prolific goal scorer in the AHL, got a cup of coffee at the NHL level and that was it . I wasn't aware he had a brother.

BOO!

Certainly, not the number I was hoping for, which I know was a stretch, but this number isn’t enough to add a key player from free agency.

Again, Lou will have to be creative or jettison contracts to add talent.
Depressingly so, let's just hope Lou is not around anymore...

Even with Clutterbuck and Martin no more it is $81.4 million already accounted for with 18 players.

10 forwards (Barzal, Horvat, Lee, Nelson, JGP, Engvall, Cizikas, Fashcing and Gauthier), 6 defenseman (Pulock, Pelech, Dobson, Mayfield, Romanov and Bolduc) and our two netminders (Sorokin and Varlamov).

The two big raises to Matty and Ilya are what ate most of what cap space we might have had.

Once you sign your 3 RFA's (Holmstrom, Wahsltrom and Salo) then you will be at 21 with 3 million or so...

Which basically means unless we part with some salary (Nelson and Palms will be on their final years at 6 million and 5 million respectively while the preferred exodus guys in JGP and Lee will have another year left on top of 24' at 7 and 5) then we will be bargain shopping, with LD being the likely priority....

Course, knowing Lou he will entertain 3 and 4 year deals for Cal and Matt......

But Lamoriello has cut bait when things get too rough. I don't think he'll keep Martin and Cal if they keep getting outproduced

isles biggest priority should get another defenseman, and hopefully try to gain that LW1. If they miss the playoffs? Its a completely different story.

Your numbers are correct, so it leans to a deal for a pending RFA, someone like, Pinto, who they can sign for less than that 3+m in surplus - it would mean the 2024 1st. With the leftover $ they go out and get a solid veteran D, like a Kulikov or Ian Cole, who can help provide depth but can be signed for whatever $ is left.

Biggest goal of next season is to also pave the way to keep Dobson and Holmstrom, since those two are going to need raises. I'd like to start considering the end of the line for someone like Lee or Palmieri. Those two could be the odd men out. Same for Pageau if Ishakov makes a case.

I think I was somehow mashing together Richie Hansen and the Slapshot Hanson brothers. You're right - he didn't have a brother, at least not one that played hockey. I'll blame it on the Nyquil I've been taking lately.... ;)

Lou is gonna toss him into a trade. He’ll score 3 goals in 4 games on his new team then fall off a cliff causing him to get sent down. The 6 Josh Ho-Sang leftover fans will be screaming for Lou’s head because they traded another generational homegrown talent.
The Ho-Sang Holdovers Club is down to 2 members.

Wahly for Broberg. Let's do it!

I just saw this. How many here think he just needs a change of scenery and has the talent to become a solid bottom pair defenseman? To the oilers fans, he's a bust but a wally for broberg seems like something the oilers would be looking for? Low cost struggling prospect for similar prospect. Not sure if they want a defenseman back or not.

Palmieri is an expiring contract next year and it doesn't make sense to trade him on pennies on the dollar, just let Kyle play out the contract, it is only 1 year left. The alternative is to sign someone, who will give you similar production for multiple years.

Ishkahov may not be ready and will be waiver-exempt next year, so there is no need for him to jump into a situation he is not ready for and the extra season of Kyle gives Maggio and Dufour further time to develop.

As for Pageau and Lee, two years after this one is not the end of the world - it doesn't make sense to buy out Lee, especially since he will score his 20 this season. If they can grab someone like Pinto, then I wouldn't be against moving Pageau for someone like Garland OR a D man with a similar contract, like, say McDonough.

EDM is trusting Broberg with 10:32 TOI per game in 10 games.

NYI is trusting Bolduc with 10:35 TOI per game in 13 games.

Broberg is 6 months younger than Bolduc. I'm not sure trading for Broberg would give us something we don't already have. However, if EDM likes Bolduc and would make an even swap, then Broberg is waivers exempt and could go to the AHL if desired.

I thought Broberg was a much better skater than Bolduc.

Broberg can really move for such a big guy, but his hockey IQ is substantially lower than Bolduc. Broberg is just another example of all tools and no toolbox, he processes the game too slowly - the typical Edmonton type of pick for that whole era.

Don't let draft position fool you.

Ok thanks, so I guess a pass. I should have known if he couldn’t crack Oilers lineup
