Ross Johnston on waivers. Had to happen... and now they can accrue some cap.
Duck fan here. Ducks brought in kassian on a pto. he was let go, our kids need protection. Our new coach Cronin should be familiar with Johnston from his time as an islanders coach. Is this dude a locker room leader type? Or just a pure face puncher?

Fine in the room but is mostly looking to fight people when he's on the ice.

Tyty. Ducks need guys who can play an effective pk game. Even if he isn’t that right now. Maybe he can be coached too? Would be very surprised if my ducks don’t claim him.

He's a great locker room guy. He's just a very limited player with crazy term for a player of his skillset. I'd be thrilled if he gets taken by Anaheim, but I don't know if you guys will do it.

Johnston is a better fighter than DesLaurier was, but DesLaurier is a better player, fwiw.

Johnston has decent hands and is a decent skater for an enforcer. Think if he had more of an opportunity, he could be better than what he's shown; 4th liner, perhaps.
Maybe so. Certainly playing consistently could only help and i would have no problem with that , but....for a team looking to add speed, he is not really an answer when we do have players who could play 4th line minutes who do.

Disagree with the bolded. On the blue line, perhaps (especially when it comes to higher-end talent). But everywhere else I think we have plenty of NHL-caliber depth.

It all depends on your opinion of the players. I do not believe that Martin or Clutterbuck are NHL level forwards over the course of an 82 game season plus playoffs. I do not believe that there are NHL-ready forwards at the AHL level that can be plugged in if there was an injury in the top 9. This may change with the development of some of their young forwards, but not yet.

The upside of this season compared to last is that there is potential to have 3 competent lines. Unfortunately, because of poor forward depth, we have a guy like Holmstrom on the first line.

As far as defense goes, I also agree about poor depth. Even Bolduc has not shown to be a competent 5/6 dman to this point.

Many here have been crapping on Martin lately. Dude had 7 goals, 12 assists, +4, and 295 hits (5th in NHL) last season from the 4th line. He had one of his best seasons ever last year. Not saying he will do it again, but let's not act like he's cooked or not NHL quality.

It was a miracle season for Martin. Somewhere between 2019 and last year was a whole bunch of flotsam from him. He wasn’t worth the investment.

A time where I don't think the stat line indicates actual play. The fourth line has a very specific role to fill and they didn't do it well at all. Martin is a part of that group. They're slower, don't get the hits they used to (effective ones), and weren't able to play a cycle game in the offensive zone at all. They were up and down every game rather than pinning the opposition in their own end like they used to do when they were most effective. I'll take the latter over the individual points any day.

Our top 6 wingers and lack of a stud PMD/PP guy has been a problem. The 4th line has been fine - I mean, its a 4th line - what do we expect? And maybe as soon as next year it's going to be Cizikas with guys like Gauthier, Fasching and Liukas (and I wouldn't be surprised if that transition starts this season).

The fourth line plays too much and is leaned on to be more than your typical fourth line. That's both on the players and the coaching staff. If they're going to keep the same personnel then the coach needs to change the way they're implemented. If the coach changes how they're implemented they need to be okay with that.

Maybe. Last season the 4th line's even strength mins per game were:

Cizikas: 12.39 mins
Martin: 11.04 mins
Clutter: 10.32 mins

I don't know how that compares to the rest of the league, but it doesn't seem outlandish when you're allocating 60 minutes to 4 lines. I do think at this point it's something that's going to resolve itself through age/injuries and with replacements in the pipeline (or already on the team -not to mention the Martin and Clutterbuck contracts running out, assuming Lou doesn't extend them!). But yeah, if Lambert is wise he'll reduce their time and give them some nights off.
