Romanov (PK2) - Barrie (PP1)


I'm not at all keen on the Isles giving up on Dobson, so soon. But I CAN see Lou envisioning Karlsson as the better fit for the next four years.

In no world are Barrie and McDonagh worth Pulock. And the difference between them is not shedding one year of Bailey.

Well yes, looking at players only. But when considering contracts... it all depends on how one views Pulock aging and his impact on the long-term roster flexibility.

I'm a big fan of both McDonagh and Pulock. I just think on the short term Isles overall d-corp improves with a McDonagh - Dobson pair. Longer-term, I hope it helps to Dobson being a true number one.

Regardless, all of my fictional proposals should always be seen as conversational musings. I'm not at all an "insider," and see this as just having fun piecing together possibilities.

Prefer Krug over Barrie as a player. Not keen on Krug's injury history and longer term. He does come across as a "Lou" kind of guy though.

I don't want either. Barrie to me is a no go regardless. Krug is 32 and his contract runs until 2027 - No thanks. There are better options out there.

Who do you have? To be clear, I assume any big term contract will automatically require retention by the trading team... to the point I've been leaving it unsaid.

Personally, if Karlsson could be acquired without losing Dobson (Doubtful), I would be all for that.

I agree with you on Krug/Barrie, but what are the better options out there that can fit into the Isles salary cap and/or they have the ammo to trade for?
 
Krug isn't the player he once was and has had a hard time staying on the ice, averaging barely 60 games played over the last 5 seasons. He just turned 32 and has 4 years and $29.5 million still owed to him at a 6.5 million cap hit per.

Considering he just turned 32 and is coming off a career low in ice time (18:35) AND is owed a considerable amount more in cash these next two seasons (17 million), I wouldn't even entertain it unless they took on Bailey's final year AND ate $10 million in cap space as well (2.5 million per).

I would also ask for one of their two 3rd round picks as well in the deal while we part ways with Aho.

Islanders send F Josh Bailey and LD Sebastian Aho to the St. Louis Blues for LD Torey Krug (2.5 million retained) and a 2023-24 3rd round draft pick (OTT)

Of course we would still have a hard decision to make after the deal with barely 7 million in cap room (assuming you got Parise/Wahlstrom back for less than 2 million) and still needing a RD, a backup G and preferably another wing. You aren't getting Mayfield, Varlamov and Engvall signed for that amount...

But ya, I would do this trade...

It all seems to be a moot point anyway as I find it hard to believe that he will wave his NTC to come here when he refused to do it to go to Philly....

Players don’t want to go through a rebuild. Especially not 32 year old ones without a cup.

Islanders have just as good of a chance if not better than the Blues to win during the length of his deal so I could see him waiving.

Even with all that I still wouldnt want Krug. 4 years is a lot of term left for a guy that is a shell of what he once was.

Perhaps you are right. Still think it has more to do with him wanting to stay in SL though

Ya, I am not overly clamoring for him either but he would still be a puck mover and help the PP- and probably would help Dobson's advancement as well along the way.

We simply dont have the assets or cap space to be picky. Krug is a type of hockey trade we have to be looking at if Lou's goal is to get another puck mover on defense, which would immensely help our special teams and forward group...

One could easily argue it is more important to get one of those than another forward or our 3rd right defenseman and at least equally as important as who gets those 20 starts backing up Sorokin...
 
I guess IB is still optimistic on Dobson, knowing that some teams could pry him away after this bad of a season. He also retweeted the "farewell Bailey" thing from Isles Territory.

Its just the 4 years attached to him. I think he will only continue to regress and within 2-3 years we will be paying to unload him. Id rather have Mayfield back at 4x4 over that. (And I dont want Mayfield back)

Does IB still have Islanders sources?

I remember him being on the ins with the team in the mid-2010s. One I clearly remember him getting was the Nick Leddy trade, where he named TJ Brennan as a part of the trade.

But I don't really remember him nailing much since Snow departed and Lou entered.

I'm pretty sure Ryan Strome was one of his bookie clients, so that may have been who was feeding a lot of inside info to IB. Not sure he still has any clients still playing on NYI.

Yes he still has sources. I think hes a lot more quiet because of Lamoriello, but I have a gut feeling that he knows what they're checking in on, or what is going to happen

Happy Lou didn't bite on Krug, even if the Flyers retained half. Four years is just way too much. If anything, the Isles should be looking at players signed short term. Hockey contracts are just way too long in any case.

He had something last year or the year before, I just forget what it was but yeah he still has sources but the mid 2010's he was tight with so many players that was his height.
