Agreed it was jailbreak hockey and he benefited from playing behind 91 and whether you agree or not JT made everyone a better offensive player i.e. Matt Molson . Would you agree that Barzal is a top skater in this league? Then why can’t he get to the center of the ice like Jack Hughes for him to be worthy of his new contract he’s going to have to start playing like the kid in NJ.
Yeah, I would agree he is a top skater, but that’s only one part of the game. Only he can decide on how he wants to play the rest of the game - that’s the underlying issue, what is he doing to improve to get to the next level?

Come to think of it, he had his ROY at Barclay’s - that’s the problem!

If one watches the ROY highlights for him on the ‘tube, you will see a noticeable difference in how he plays the game. If one actually watches the nuances of the game, then its all right there for viewing.

He will have a full year of playing with Horvat and hopefully he’s rehabbed the knee injury, if he doesn’t reach the next level it will be a disappointment. Love his speed, has skill needs to trip the switch in his head.

Again, worst team in the league defensively, the opponents are not really wasting their time on the Isles in that situation. He can (and did) bank all the points, however, his production hasn’t reached the same level shackled and unshackled. Lot harder to produce and impact when teams learn to play against you.

We can go in circles all day, we should just agree to disagree on this particular player.
yea man, agree. Respect your persistence, Perhaps we draft a gem to debate over in the future

I was counting as of July '24 when the new contract goes into effect, but yeah, as a practical matter you're right that he'll be 34 when the following season is starting. I'm not too worried about Nelson to the extent that he's no Mike Peca. But still, the term and price have to be considered at that age.

If you're rebuilding the team over 2-3 years, you're retooling. :)
There’s no such thing as a “retool”. Teams are either competent at rebuilding or they aren’t.

My formative hockey fandom years were the years of dynasties or near-dynasties. BOS, PHI, MTL, NYI, EDM.... Organizations built these dynamos that could not be beaten. Those days are over. Now there are teams like COL last year that are echoes of the dynasty years, but with the cap there is so much parity that winning a Cup to some extent is influenced by randomness. What experts here had VGK vs. FLA in the finals this year?!?!

My point? Not sure there is one. Maybe that an NHL team owner is more likely to say "build me a team that can make the playoffs, which helps my bottom line, and then let's see what happens".

That's an interesting take. I feel like the opposite is true - that with a salary cap and guys turning UFA at 26 or 27 the days of rebuilds are over and everyone has to retool constantly. But if you say you're going to rebuild in 2-3 years, then it's not a rebuild.

I've mentioned Karlsson a few times but I'm trying to avoid thinking about him and the NYI. However, for all his warts and his contract, is there a single available player who would transform the Isles more than him? People talk about PMD or Debrincat, but Karlsson had 40 more points than those guys. If you think about dynamic players in the NHL this past year, after McDavid who's next? Maybe Karlsson. I know, it's crazy.

Please let's not lmao
BTW, the Karlsson post was not me thinking we're going to trade Dobson for him! Although....

im starting to have a hard time tracking who we're supposed to be trading?? Is it Bailey, Nelson or Dobson?!

At this rate the entire team will be traded by August! :sarcasm:

yeah i'd keep an eye out for draft night. isles might sneak into round 1 if possible

If they move Dobson it would be for something that helps the NHL team, not picks.
A Dobson for Karlsson would mean Bailey would be part of that deal as well as San Jose needing to retain - say 2.75 AAV. Hopefully, it wouldn't mean any more assets attached. Let's say for argument's sake it wouldn't take anymore.

Any $ left would mean a Wahlstrom QO and a backup like Rittich 1y/1m.
With a 22-man roster by waiving Johnston, that leaves roughly 5m left leaving two options -
Mayfield and Parise signings
OR
Engvall and Schenn signings

A blueline -
Pelech - Karlsson
Romanov - Pulock
Aho - Mayfield or Schenn
Bolduc

Forward group -
Nelson - Barzal - Wahlstrom
Lee - Horvat - Palmieri
Parise or Engvall - Pageau - Holmstrom
Martin - Cizikas - C'buck
x - Fasching

PP 1
Lee
Barzal - Horvat - Nelson
Karlsson

PP2
Palmieri
Wahlstrom - Pageau - Parise/Engvall
Aho

5on5 play will most likely be what it was last season - maybe a tick-up by swapping Horvat for Beauvillier.
The PP will be improved.

It may mean an extra 6-8 points

Dobson + Bailey + Johnston for Karlsson (at 20% retained) is 9.2M per AAV, nudging out Barzal’s cap hit by 50K but in essence falling in line with NYI’s cap structure.

With Johnston attached, NYI is moving a total of 10.1M in cap space so they are gaining 900K and getting the best player (by far) in the deal while also filling needs (right shot D, PPQB, franchise player) all while shedding Bailey.

There’s a good chance Dobson’s footwork will prevent him from being a true top unit PPQB in my opinion.

I’d let Mayfield walk, re-sign Engvall (and Parise assuming he wants to keep playing), and go for a cheap 3RD (Schenn, Holl, Johnson, Stecher, etc.)

A lot easier (and cheaper) to fill a 3rd pairing PK’er at the deadline than a PPQB.

How about some Trotz favorites...

Pulock, Bailey and Johnston to Nashville for McDonagh and Barrie maybe get a 2nd or 3rd thrown in...Since Pulock has the longer term and overall better value?

Pelech (PK1) - Mayfield (PK1/2)
McDonagh (PK1/2)- Dobson (PP2)
Romanov (PK2) - Barrie (PP1)

I'm not at all keen on the Isles giving up on Dobson, so soon. But I CAN see Lou envisioning Karlsson as the better fit for the next four years.
