Hi guys, what's the consensus on Mayfield? Do you think he'll be back or that he'll walk as an UFA?
back
How is his breakout pass and what do you think he's worth in terms of his AAV?
Probably #1 in the league over the last 5 years for icings. Just a guess . What’s he worth ? I say he gets 4 x 4 open market and maybe 4 x 3.5 if he stays . To counter the icings comment , he probably was our ice time leader during both ECF runs and is a playoff type defender every team would want for the spring games that count the most . Over the first 80 games he has his ups and downs.

Breakout pass is average at best, he’ll get overpaid as a UFA if he leaves NYI.

There has been some talk of him potentially pairing with Nurse. If he can't pass the puck worth a damn then that would mean that neither guy on that pairing could pass the puck worth a damn and we'd lead the league in icings!

Nurse ices the puck a ton, Mayfield sounds like a useful player but probably not the best fit for our top 4.

This is one of the big questions of the offseason - do they think Barzal is a C or can he be a RW? If he's a C, then yeah, you have to think seriously about moving JGP or even Nelson. If they move Nelson, there's a LHD on COL that a lot of people here really seem to think would help the Isles.

And, I would consider Mayfield re-signing to be almost a lock if it weren't for the Isles' need to improve the PP and speed/puck-moving on the back end.
Yeah, Kurtz thinks Mayfield is a as good as gone just because of the fact that he seems to make the Isles defense core appear redundant. Same reason he mentions Pulock could go instead of Mayfield. That need for a puck moving defenseman is legit. I think LL might actually secretly regret going with Romanov instead of a puck mover (and I like what Romanov brings).

Kurtz is terrible. if he thinks Mayfield is gone, that probably means Lou's already signed him...

So LL wants the PP fixed. Has anyone considered it might just be the players? Can't get blood from a stone.

Also, if mayfield is gone, what are some good targets at lower prices?

Regarding Bailey - would we have to add to get someone to take him or would someone take him for almost free?

I would think the Hawks would take him for next to nothing with some retention. They have so much room and could take maybe a 3rd from us and flip him for a 4th or 5th at the TDL. Maybe straight up for Zaitsev? Not sure about that one.

There are teams out there with better PPs although the names on at least our first unit are shinier.

What came first, the chicken or the egg.

What we do know is that Horvat is still new, Barzal was gone most of Horvat's time here, and Dobson is still super young.

And we know that a handful of guys have had their shot at organizing this PP from the bench. We're getting the same result.

Also, if mayfield is gone, what are some good targets at lower prices?

It is felt that a number of players are going to be bought out this summer, likely before free agency. Several are Dmen that may fit the mold. Something to keep an eye on.

Naturally, righty shot UFAs of note are Severson and Klingberg.

Theoretically, one has to wonder if Trotz in Nashville or Capuano in Ottawa would have enough love for Bailey that they could influence a move that sees him there without the NYI having to sacrifice for it.

Some trade thoughts regarding Bailey have been
A) Move him for one of several back-up goalies whose teams are looking to get rid of who would serve our needs.
B) Maybe move him to Nashville in a deal involving Tyson Barrie, who is due 4.5 MM next season before becoming a UFA. Remember, Bailey's cap hit is 5 MM, but he'll only be due 3.5 MM in payment.

But honestly, I can't see a team in the league who'd want him as anything other than a minimum wage UFA addition.

I keep going back to, if he cant crack our vaunted FWD group, then who's can he? I just feel like his skill set and lack of speed really put him at a disadvantage in this NHL.

.....Of course he will sign on to TOR and get 80 points next year, having been "unchained".....

Lou referenced the end of the 2022 season as why he thinks the power play can be fixed with the players we have. They were inconsistent last year and dreadful this year. In fact, inconsistency with the core group is the problem they've had since Lou got here and it never got any better. I don't believe there's anything left to be milked out of the power play, unless Oliver Wahlstrom and Bo Horvat can be difference makers.

You need guys like Mayfield on the backend - around playoff time. Lou will resign him.

moving Nelson to Barzal’s wing OR trading where his value is at the highest and then using the cap savings to address the need on the w.

As for the PP? EK?

Capuano wrecked him when he was here.

They have been misusing Horvat on the power play. Even with Barzal out, I feel like Horvat could've had so much more success on the PP if they put him in the slot. A lot of his goals in Vancouver either came from deflections or one timers up front. Playing him on the outside, or asking him to drive play is totally butchering the point of having him.

He has nasty hand-eye coordination, and a great shot, which makes him perfect in front of the net. I understand that's Lee's specialty too, so why are we playing the both of them at the same time? No wonder Horvat struggled so much since coming here.

You have to use him right, and for the most part, he hasn't been used right. Get pucks on net, and let Horvat do what he does best. Put Lee on the second PP, and maybe then you'd see some better results.

Mayfield is also a very bad person when it comes to costly penalties. He's a player that I would fear blows up in our face should he be extended 4x4

Also thank you for this. They need to put him in front of the net over Lee, who has been declining hard for the past two years. Horvat does that stuff, and its why I am so hell bent on finding that puck mover like Orlov or Durzi

I don't want to move Lee from the front, I want Horvat in the bumper to open up for shots while also being there for tips.

I just want them to work it lower on the boards (Nelson and Barzy) and to move the puck quicker. Also for Lee to pivot out to the side of the net to get a different look and to receive a pass.

Lee can get the puck on the side of the net and Horvat can rotate into the hole created by Lee, and either the far side half wall player cuts into the high slot or the defenseman comes down from the point to go into the bumper.

The power play needs movement and options. It's so f***ing stale, it's like watching a beer league power play.

But it will be 3G and 77A, getting the secondary assist on Matthew's PP goals.

And Bones will still be ecstatic, as will I.

Bailey for Nylander and a 1st . . . Make it so!

I call it 'attack points'. What are we setting up for? That's a question that I ask when I watch the PP and I never got an answer watching.

Trade Bailey for Nemeth, buy out Nemeth. Both have the same salary, Coyotes get a higher cap hit to assist them to the floor and we get a lower cap hit to make a buy out easier.

Agree. Rangers do this very well with Kreider. They establish a wide point shot getting deflected back on net. Do not understand the Isles reluctance.
