That's how I build the team as the season went by, not how Lou actually did. Tolvanen was free, Kostin could've been had for Bellows. Yeah but whatever lets just enjoy Lou doing Lou. 3 more years, 3 more years! Chant.
Bellows was never going to net you Kostin, Tolvanen would've cost money (i.e Lamoriello having to let go of Clutterbuck or Johnston), and the other two were never in his mind. Maybe Barbashev but that ship sailed, especially with how bare our cupboard is. You'd really give up Dufour or George for him? No thanks.

Its like fighting with LouLam. My moves were before Lou's trades.

Something around Pageau + Wahlstrom for DeBrincat?

Debrincat-Barzal-Rodrigues
Lee-Horvat-Holmstrom
Engvall-Nelson-Palmieri
Parise-Cizikas-Clutterbuck
Fasching, Martin

Maybe they take Bailey too because of the Capuano connection?

He's exactly what NYI needs on the wing (I feel like I've posted this 100 times, probably have).

Think it'll take more than that, and he needs to be signed.

Although a Dobson for DeBrincat trade is intriguing - there is not enough room in the cap to fit both Severson and DeBrincat.

The cap needs to be higher than 83.5 for that to happen. unless you move another player that makes $ - Pageau or Palmieri.
You cannot trade Dobson without a replacement

I don’t think the isles have the pieces to land DeBrincat if it isn’t for a Dobson.

As far as assets to trade for Cat, I don't think it would take a lot. Ottawa doesn't have a lot incentive not to trade his rights, and I don't think teams are going to be lining up to get into a bidding war for them. Debrincat doesn't have much incentive to sign for less than his QO of 9mil until after the deadline to issue QOs, but if he isn't signed by that deadline and no QO was offered, he becomes UFA. 9mil a year feels like too much for him, so I think teams are better off hoping no one gives him the QO, he hits UFA, and they can try to sign him for less.

I could be wrong, maybe he is willing to forgo the possibility of a 9mil QO that takes him to UFA for a contract on a lower AAV. But I'd predict he waits to see if he gets that before agreeing to take less per year longterm. I think this is why his trade value last year was what it was -- GMs knew it was either just for one season or you had to be willing to sign him for 9mil+ to extend it past that.

Hi guys, what's the consensus on Mayfield? Do you think he'll be back or that he'll walk as an UFA? How is his breakout pass and what do you think he's worth in terms of his AAV?

I wonder if a 1st +Maggio/Dufour/Ishakov + Pageau/Palmieri would be enough for DeBrincat.

Does not have one. Probably the worst regular on a team full of defenders with poor breakouts. Ices the puck often as a result. Is good on the PK since breakouts and icing are less of a requirement.

He will probably chase a higher AAV, since he was underpaid the last half of his contract. Hard to say what that means for his future contract.

I think Mayfield would be the type to take a cheaper team friendly deal.

HOWEVUH, his agent would be an idiot to not strongly encourage Scott to explore the highest bidder. And I don't think the Isles will wind up being that highest bidder.

I like him, he's a very good bottom 4 defenseman who provides physicality and moves pretty well for his size. Meat and potatoes type of guy, nothing flashy to his game, off the glass and out.

He's been underpaid his entire career on a lengthy contract so I suspect he'll try to grab the money on this next deal. I'd expect somewhere between $3.5-4M but he might take a lower AAV for term since he's not getting any younger.

Mayfield is a good bottom pairing D man that can pitch in top 4 with some injuries in my humble opinion. Seemed to get better as the playoff games extended through the years. Personally, guys on this message board may make better breakout passes. Have the upmost respect for Mayfield and his work ethic as nothing was handed to him. Good team player as well

In an ideal world, his current deal would be another two years long and the Islanders could continue to bank on him as one of the most dependable #5 Dmen around.

He hasn't had a whole lot of assists, but he has a number of outstanding assists.

Still, that first pass out of the zone has been a trouble spot for much of his career.

If he hits the UFA market, I'm fully expecting at least a 4-year (likely longer) deal averaging over 4 MM per season.

As unattractive as his skating style is, there aren't a whole lot of Dmen out there who have the size, range, snarl, attitude, PK efficiency, and generally doable skating while also adding a usually impressive kind of 15-20 points per season.

He doesn't have a breakout pass. That usually ends up in a turnover or a pass that misses the mark. If anything, Mayfield's only offensive attribute is a strong shot from the blue line.

I think Mayfield would prefer to stay here, but I'm not sure the Islanders can afford him unless he gives them a home town discount.

I actually think JG to Ottawa could be a possibility but idk their center depth. Just going by their fans comments on needing better bottom 6. JG is the ideal 3C.

They have Norris, Stutzle, and Pinto - also they have Zub, Chychrun, Sanderson, and Chabot as their top 4. They need deBrincat, so if there is a move likely it is for a winger who could put the puck in the net.

At 83.5 - I think the best course of action is what they do with Nelson.

Nelson to the Wing with Barzal - solves the C clog. Last year Nelson and Barzal together for a brief few shifts looked great.

They could look to add a player like Garland and have Garland play with Horvat and Lee - that gives them speed and someone who can gain the zone. Garland is feisty but small. But If Lou is committed to Engvall, then the top 9 will pretty much look the same as the end of the year. It seems like Lou likes wingers like Engvall - wingers with size and skill, i.e. Holmstrom.

The other option would be to trade Nelson for futures - the Blues, the Wild, the Avalanche would all come calling. The Isles could then take those cap savings and sign someone like Tarasenko or Bertuzzi.

Athletic article by Kurtz said there would be interest in him if Isles decide Barzal is a center
This is one of the big questions of the offseason - do they think Barzal is a C or can he be a RW? If he's a C, then yeah, you have to think seriously about moving JGP or even Nelson. If they move Nelson, there's a LHD on COL that a lot of people here really seem to think would help the Isles.

And, I would consider Mayfield re-signing to be almost a lock if it weren't for the Isles' need to improve the PP and speed/puck-moving on the back end.

I've seen some mentions of Severson for the Isles, but he's not really "dynamic", right? Not a guy who's going to transform the PP or puck-movement? And he'll probably get a pretty big contract. So IDK that he's really what the Isles need.
