Marner is a superior player to Barzal even if you correct for positional value. This is a trade that won't happen. It'll take Barzal + to make a deal like that happen.
If you factor in their contracts that evens their value out, IMO. First, the Isles could deal Barzal anywhere they want, whereas TOR can only deal Marner to where he wants to go (edit - that's after 7/1, but the clock is ticking). Marner's cap hit is $1.75M higher than Barzal's, and Marner is a UFA in 2 years whereas Barzal has 8 years left. Heck, it's possible TOR would need to add.

I don't think the rest of the NHL sees it this way. Marner is 26 and just had three 100 pt/82 gp seasons in a row. He's played at a 90 pt pace for the past 5 seasons, since age 21.

I love Barzal, but it's not really close. Marner is on another tier. Marner is a bargain at 10.9. Barzal is roughly a 9 mil player at this point, he is properly valued. Since his 85 point season, Barzal has been roughly a 60-70 pt player. Obviously really good and worthy of being a #1 center, but not the same tier as Marner.

Even if you correct for contract status and NMC, Marner is more valuable and its not particularly close.

I wonder if Lou and Trotz will link up at the draft considering their history.

Barrie would help NYI's powerplay, Bailey would help NYI by no longer being on the team (plus he knows Trotz) and it's safe to assume Barry would go nuts for Chainz' leadership.

I don't know what, but I do see Trotz making some sort of trade with the Isles...just make sense since he know the roster so well and always had good things to say about the core on the island.

Well don't forget, we're talking about the isles here. So not sure Marner would be a 99 pt player here.
Marner had 36 PP points. Isles PP isn't even in the same atmosphere as Toronto. Will Marner help the Isles PP? Probably but by how much? So maybe marner has 25PP points instead of 36?

You'll have Barzal as second line center feeding passes to JT and will probably be an 85pt player.
So you'll have a 85pt RW on the Isles making 10.9 mil while you have a 85pt C on Toronto making 9.1 mil. Maybe that trade favors the Maple Leafs?

Of course i'm just spit balling here because I have no clue what each player would do on either team :D

I agree that a deal with Trotz is a possibility and previously suggested a Bailey for Barrie swap. The Isles could add in negotiating rights to Mayfield (if we're getting Barrie, we'd be letting Mayfield go anyway). Trotz could value some of the Isles' players more than most. Clutter could be a possibility if he's looking for culture change. NAS also desperately needs help at C, FWIW.

Bailey, Pageau and the rights to Mayfield for Barrie, Sissons and one of the 2 2nd round picks

Gives us another 2nd and about $4 million in cap space
Gives Trotz his character guys

I just noticed that Nashville has THIRTEEN picks in Rds 1-6
2 1's, 2 2's, 3 3's, 3 4's, etc

Just give it a listen and tell me it doesn't sound like the Islanders situation, I'm not going to dictate it.

Why would Nashville do that?
When I originally posted the thought, it was Bailey+, although that didn't come through in the post in this thread. I'm honestly not that familiar with Barrie other than stats and a brief profile (good numbers, but comes across as more of a 3rd pair/PP guy), so I don't know how big the "plus' would be. But yeah, not an even swap.

It’s pretty vague and cryptic. Could be anything really. I’d be ok with him coming to the isles, not necessarily as GM, if it gave us a better chance of poaching Mathew’s or Marner.

If that’s the case, they will be looking to trade a few of those. Can’t draft 13 players and sign them all.

I'm still bummed that Trotz is gone. That to me is the only real sour moment of the last 5 years. Sure there have been a few questionable moves and some on ice disappointment but that one stands out as a real bummer.
