I'm not opposed to trading Varlamov, but a competent backup would need to be had. Thing to remember is Lamoriello can hold him and if the season goes south trade him at the deadline. All depends on if he needs the space now or later I guess.
I have no doubt that Lou, Korn, and Grieco have someone in mind, can get him reasonably, and coach him up to a quality level. They've done it a few times.

If I had to venture a guess, I would say that the Faith (From HF Posters)
in Lou as GM pre-2022 was at around 90%,
I think that # has fallen to 75% . Lets see where this ends up after July

The Islanders assorted holes cannot possibly be filled without trading Varlamov for the assets and cap space to do so. Varlamov is the only expendable player worth anything.

How about Kane, Debrincat and Jones - do we have cap space?
Sure, send Bailey, Palmieri, Pulock, Beau, JGP and Varly back

Sign a few UFAs and promote Raty and Holmstrom!

Lee - Barzal - Debrincat
Parise - Nelson - Kane
Bellows - CC - Wahlstrom
Holmstrom - Raty - CC

Pelech - Dobson
Kulak - Jones
Salo - Mayfield

Sorokin
Greiss

Does that work?

Bingo.

Thank you for stating the oh-so obvious. And even if Lou cannot fix all the Isles holes this offseason, trading Varlamov is still a smart move. Again a team no exactly a contender with no farm system and minimal cap space should be doing whatever possible to improve those two things.

How on earth does NOBODY beat that offer????
That screams "get the best first round pick we can", which means NJ, Philly, and CBJ (the three teams most likely to trade ahead of Ottawa) weren't interested. It also means no team in this range (and that includes the Isles) was willing to offer their 2023 first rounder.

I also wonder if this is a sign of DeBrincat working his way to UFA in two years.

Much like the Fiala deal to the Kings I have to believe the Blackhawks really wanted a top-10 pick and didn't shop around.

The only other thing is that teams did not want to have to give a 5'7 player 9M+ on a long term deal a year from now.

Very few other explanations.

Don't overlook the obvious. Rookie GM with ridiculous support staff sells Hagel for two borderline 1st picks and is labeled smart. Believes his press clippings and announces to the world he is open for business. Collects 7OA in a marginal draft year for a 40 goal scorer

Fiala and DeBrincat did not go for much. Unfortunately that's two less scoring options who are at an ideal age and from the western conference. Definitely feels like a missed opportunity.

BTW, this has implications for Tkachuk too. Good chance he works his way to UFA in a year, when he'll have full control over his destination and possibly a higher cap ceiling to negotiate around.
