What backup would you want?

I literally said, "Trade Varly no matter what and we'll figure out the rest."

That means trade him first. I care a lot more about not losing an asset more valuable than Georgiev for nothing a year from now. Odds are very against just winning the Cup this season and Varly ain't returning next season.

Damn we should be involved on DeBrincat

The Blackhawks turned down two high 1st rounders for him so his trade price (and his next contract price) are just too high.

Uhhhh...For a goalie with a sub .900 save % and nearly 3 GAA (and needs a new contract) it absolutely is.

Last offseason Alex Nedeljkovic was coming off a .932 save % and 1.90 GAA season with the Hurricanes and only returned a 3rd rounder.

So this price paid by Sakic was silly at best and insane at worst. Georgiev actually makes their goalie situation worse, and they paid 3 picks to do that.

...Oh and everyone knew the rangers needed to trade Georgiev. And have I mentioned...He isn't good.

What a joke.

the Rangers were an awful defensive team and it took a player of Igor’s calibre to overcome that- believing that Georgiev is better than that stat line -

Sorry, thought you might have some in mind.

Wait for it… some website on an interview just said Kane and a New York team, the Isles. Pure speculation, but countdown to the tweeter…

Mismanaged doesn’t mean lack of talent. Put dach in this class and he’d go first overall IMO
I am not giving up my 13OA for him- as it has been a real struggle......everywhere. I still see it as near impossible to win only a 1/3 of your faceoffs, but somehow this kid manages to do it....

I mean Walhstrom has 6 more goals than him in 26 less games and about 5 minutes less ice time per game....

Nope. Free agency is silly as almost everyone gets overpaid. If you trade Varly for something like a 2nd and a prospect probably the best move might be to then trade something like a 4th for a backup on a cheaper deal for 2+ seasons.

I really don't study the backup goalie market, but given the last few offseasons...Goalies fly around like mosquitos during the summer, so since it's clear Sorokin is the goods, we probably aren't winning the Cup this year, and Varly is walking for nothing in a year...It would simply be good GMing to maximize an asset and save cap space.

And even if we couldn't find an even decent backup goalie...Would it be the worst thing in the world if we sucked for 1 year, got a top 5-10 pick in a superb draft, added a young stud, and came back gangbusters in 23-24? I don't think it would.

He just might be....But he still ain't Varlamov and thus why we should be trading him.

I saw something that BUF wants Yurov. If they don't take him with their first pick, I wonder if we can get something from them to swap back to #16 (which I speculated about previously as a trade back target).

Holy f***, no way would I pay that for him.

I’d have kept Gruabuer at that price before I gave it to Darcy Kuemper.

Be jealous of Sakic as a GM all you want but he’s been bad at judging goaltending.

I'm not opposed to trading Varlamov, but a competent backup would need to be had. Thing to remember is Lamoriello can hold him and if the season goes south trade him at the deadline. All depends on if he needs the space now or later I guess.

Yes, but ironically the space now would help us more long-term. Trading him at the deadline would get us assets, but if we're having an average season where we're hovering aroundthe 8th seed Lou ain't trading him, we're still not going to win the Cup, and who knows if the goalie market could get you what it could now.

This isn't like Chara last trade deadline that maybe he returns a 4th. Varly is legit valuable. I say cut the cord and get something for sure as opposed to being in no man's land come next March and risk letting him walk for nothing which honestly is just stupid given that the writing is on the wall.
