Best case for me is if we can get Barzy on the Draisatl/Zibanejad 8x8.5 contract which would save 500k from this model.
Yeah, best case if he can get into the top 50 scoring race at a point per game.

I see Varlamov signing at about 2.5 mil and Mayfield is gone. Godspeed, good soldier, it’s time for you to cash in and it can’t happen here. Promote Hutton, trade one or both of Bailey/Beauvillier (with retention if need be), use the money saved towards a winger.
Issue is we have absolutely no depth on the back end. Very quickly you end up with an Aho in the top-4One of the best top fours in the East now signed for the next three years at 22% of the current cap.
Sorokin also a steal for two years at 4M per.
Time to go back to eating teams up alive defensively and get this team into the playoffs so GMLL can go out and acquire a high-end scorer at the deadline.
Depends on how badly Mayfield wants to cash in and if he's willing to take the 'Cizikas Special' (longer term to sacrifice AAV while still getting the total dollars he wants).Lou has not let one single notable free agent walk yet so give me $1,000 on Mayfield resigning.
I would think Salo gets a shot in the top four before Aho, at least on the left side. Hutton is the 4RD, which is fine at this juncture of the year.Issue is we have absolutely no depth on the back end. Very quickly you end up with an Aho in the top-4

Thanks. Curious, I'm fox goes down who would be in the rags top 4?Issue is we have absolutely no depth on the back end. Very quickly you end up with an Aho in the top-4
Maybe 3-4 years ago he was.
there is a big gap between last season and a cup. i'd be happy with a good team, winning hockey, a playoff berth and player development improvement
It is what it is.
Little cap space, little trade assets made it tough to get an impact forward.
Re: speculation about what Lou might and might not have been doing these past weeks, don't forget that Lou has said repeatedly that he likes "the group". And there was also this:
So maybe Lou was calling around, and maybe he made a low offer to Kadri, or maybe not. Maybe where we are right now was his plan all along. Criticize him for that if you like, but I don't understand the definitive "he missed out on JG and Kadri because he couldn't make cap space". We don't know that.
Players always signed in FL. Those guys in OTT signed there because they want to be close to home. I doubt Debrincat resigns with OTT.I doubt it’s that. All of the sudden star players don’t have a problem signing up to play in Sunrise or Kanata or Newark.
It is the last season for Varlamov. He’s on an expiring contract. If he were to return as a UFA I’m sure it will be for less than $2.5MHere's a quick look at what next season will be like if we just re-sign our RFAs and UFAs to reasonable contracts.... no room for more changes without *gulp* moving out a contract. Also no room to re-sign Bellows. Have to think this is the last season for one of Mayfield or Varlamov barring the cap rising 5M or soView attachment 578791
This is correct, Lamoriello is self-admittedly a goal differential guy and he clearly believes in achieving a playoff worth "DIFF" through goaltending and defense. As constructed, this team is hoping to lock you up defensively and win 3-1/2-0. At the TDL Lou'll hope a bonafide scorer will be available.
Now, this season will show whether its been the talent of the players keeping the GA low or the strategy of the coach they just fired.
Too bad he doesn't seem to realize that goal differential can be impacted by GF too, though. This is correct, Lamoriello is self-admittedly a goal differential guy and he clearly believes in achieving a playoff worth "DIFF" through goaltending and defense.
Clutterbuck and/or Martin would help us immensely with something that lands them on LTIR like Shea Weber.Re: Mayfield
Count me in among those who feel he's gonna be wrapped up long-term. Definitely think Lou sees him as part of a regular contender for many more years.
Might even come before the end of the season, kind of like with Clutterbuck last season.
Hmmm... Colorado with Jack Johnson and Tampa Bay Lightning with Zach Bogosian in their top six for the Stanley Cup Clincher tells me... NO.Does any team?
It's the fans want to believe they know better. It's easier to pick apart of the low hanging fruit vs. look critically at the players that should really be impacting the game.Hmmm... Still can't understand why people get so worried about the 6-8 D-spot on this team. It's no better or any worse than any other team in the NHL.
But what if he called and told you he'd traded you to Calgary for Huberdeau's top fan plus a 2023 2nd?I am super-pissed at Lou today. He allowed the world to know that Dobson, Romanov, and Bellows resigned, and at what cap hits.
Now it's impossible for him make another trade or signing this offseason.
Extending Mayfield could be "The 4th Transaction".Re: Mayfield

IDK, Kurz wasn't quoting anyone and he wasn't talking about a specific team, so he was just talking very generally about what he was hearing, and that "his understanding" was that Bailey was not being shopped. And Lou did say they were looking to make hockey trades rather than just signing guys. So maybe the whole "they're trying to move Bailey to make space to sign JG/Kadri" was a total fiction? As with anything involving Lou, you have to read between the lines.
(Lou locks himself into his office for 2 months and has every GM, player, coach, and agent swear an oath of silence. He then proceeds to offer Josh Bailey to the other 31 teams at least 6 times each. Every one says no or wants a 1st round pick in return to take him. Lou cannot make a deal and finally weeks later he accepts that fact and stops offering Bailey around. When Lou finally cracks his office door open letting in the first sunlight since June, we hear...)
"...at the moment Josh Bailey is not being shopped, nor is he even thought to be available. "
