Colin White:
A forward who can play up the middle or on the wing, I've always thought of him as being a "Lamoriello" type. I remember working a U18 tourney in Switzerland where he captained Team USA - as an underager. That team included Matthews, Tkachuk, McAvoy, and Keller, to name a few. Just something to take note of...
Jesse Puljujarvi:
I don't really care what anyone in Oilerville says or has been saying, I heavily believe this kid is one of the gravest examples of needing a change of scenary in the league. I don't know what comes next for him and yes, Edmonton shouldn't be in a rush to move him (although they have a very strange forward dynamic that almost makes his true possibilities redundant), but I can see him very much ending up like Olli Jokinen in this league.
Almost to a T. There's a 70-point player there under the right circumstances. Will we ever see him in those circumstances???
Adding Paliafito:
Just in case anyone thought differently, I believe he's not necessarily being added to have any say in scouting with respect to the kids we draft or may sign out of college/junior as UFAs, be it for the Isles or BPort. But of major note is that in recent years, the Isles have done NOTHING with respect to signing UFAs out of Europe, something several other teams, with the Make Beliefs being one of the most active ones, do with regularity. As such, the signing is almost shocking, as you don't add a guy like this without the intention of adding more bodies from overseas via free agency. That's VERY interesting for our team, as this is a route yet untaken and may shine some light on what Lou is thinking about moving some current pieces and/or adding what often turn out to be "tradeable assets".
Again, some teams do this every single spring/summer and those who do it actively usually find a few guys here and there who help them out. Many of the 23-30-year old Europeans brought over were perhaps drafted but never signed by their respective NHL teams. Some played for every national team imaginable, but never got drafted. Others just come out of nowhere after 5-7 years of minimal roles. At times, they work. Few become "stars", as was the case with Panarin and several can really bomb despite fantastic European/Russian careers (i.e. Gusev and especially Shipachyov), but it's an excellent way to compensate for having very few draft picks. And anyone following has seen that we've not only had just 16 picks over the past three summers, and only have five this summer and six next summer.
And fact is, you look at the Tampas and Colorados of the league and you'll see that their stocked with stars they drafted of their own accord. After dishing out bevvies of picks for Pageau, Palmieri and the unloading of Ladd, this team has to start investing in selecting future performers while getting creative in supplementing and complementing the current StaCup aspirations.
This is a route to organizational depth that can make much of that easier and more palable.
Very excited to see what Paliafito means for this organization.
