Horvat deal was Beauvillier (traded to Chicago for a 5th), Raty (2021 2nd round forward), and a 1st. But it was also a month earlier in the season and with 25% retention.

Given Carolina has most of the cap space to make this move ($5.3M as of today of Guentzel's $6M cap hit), there isn't a need to both send an expensive roster player back and have 25% retention.

Would Carolina do a 1st and a prospect for Guentzel? I don't think they would for a rental, but he would fit well. Would Pittsburgh prefer a young roster player (Drury) and a 1st given they are still trying to retool around Crosby, Malkin, Letang, and Karlsson?
First third and prospect or Drury could be something

Best D in the league?

I like Nikishin as much as the next guy but the hype train is getting to be a bit much. If B Tkachuk were truly available and it took Nikishin + to get him, bye bye Nikishin. I’d take the sure thing.

Nah, we apparently weren't willing to offer Nikishin for Timo Meier, so I doubt we offer him for Brady, especially when Nikishin has improved since then.

Counterpoint: Brady is substantially younger and substantially more physical as a player. And he is signed for a long time.I don’t think it is a sure thing that our front office would value them equally.

That’s where I suppose I differ from some Canes’ fans and the front office.

I would have included Nikishin to get Meier, and I’d trade him for Tkachuk. Meier’s crappy season aside, those are the types of forwards that potentially put a team like the Canes over the top and theyre young enough to keep helping the team for the next 6-8 seasons. Plus, they would help NOW

Nikishin is great and has immense potential, but he’s still just that, potential. He may never come over, the political climate may not allow him to comer over, he could bust, etc. Or he could be a stud #1D. All of those things are possible.

For where the Canes were at last season and potentially could be this season, I would have then and still would begrudgingly trade Nikishin for a surefire scorer who was signed long term.

And he's already under contract for 4 more years after this vs. Meier was an RFA who had a 1 year $10M(?) QO with no certainty that he would re-sign in Carolina after that.

I'm not saying he will become that but he absolutely has that potential. There is not a single aspect of his game that you can point to and say it would keep him from having any shot at being the best D in the league. I've been high on him since well before the hype train so it's not really that. Plus I'm probably lower on Brady than most. I don't think he's anywhere near as good as his brother. Would trade Nikishin in a package for Matt but not Brady. We can agree to disagree here but don't be surprised if Nikishin winds up being a considerably better NHLer than B Tkachuk

I like Brady more than Meier but yeah I agree with this and wouldn't be surprised if this is how the borg feels too. It's pretty clear to everyone they are high on him and consider him essentially untouchable (I'm sure they'd move him for EP if he became available but not likely). Plus I view the discussion as being moot as Brady ain't getting moved either.

If my arm was twisted:

Carolina gets JG, Smith and Accairi (750k retained) for Bunting, Drury, Jackson Blake and the best 2nd rounder.

Smith and Accairi are basically dumps for them but we pay some value. We allow them to get younger with Bunting and Drury plus add a higher prospect who could play next year and a pick.
This is probably a little shaded towards Carolina’s favor but we don’t pay huge rental prices.

Canes add some grit to the 4th and RH FO guy. Add 2 way play with smith to allow KK to go back to 2c. JG adds 40 goal potential at least for a playoff run, maybe longer.

An entire Top 4 pair probably departs in the Summer and those that remain will be 30(+). Nikishin will be (I don’t understand the pessimism) a shot of potential high end youth exactly when they need it. They have to let things play out, because he’s a window extender if he’s legit.

The assets to do some things are still there with him off the table. It won’t be an elite asset like a 2nd contract Tkachuk, but a Buchnevich-type non-rental or a competitive bid for a Pettersson-type unsigned player is realistic.

Now to think of if, maybe Waddell was livid about how the Meier thing went down, because SJ was downright predatory in trying to force Waddell into big overpayment, lest he gets criticized for shunning away from big game hunting year in year out.

May be Waddell has to be dealing with that mindset in this year too, with his counterparts trying to bend him over the barrell thinking he can't keep returning empty-handed from every TDL. Canes do have some nice pieces people would want.

Finally back here writing. Last time I came back I promised to write often. I guess there was only one or two posts I posted after that. Been reading boards almost everyday though.

Goalies: I think we should trade Andersen if we're gonna trade someone - we have Kooch for the next season but there's a little risk still - he's the safest bet still for the playoff success. Kooch has been great now, Martin has been good (but I'm not sold yet, a bit lost at times) and the reasons mentioned earlier he's probably here to stay. Raanta - I'd like to keep him. I think he's been good (aside a couple of games). Probably will retire after this season.

I don’t see us paying to trade away Andersen. The goalie market is again barren next offseason and he has performed well as a cane

New Necas “out there” rumor from Larry Brooks seems to be making the rounds. Should be a fun few days.

Larry Brooks isn’t a source. He isn’t even right about Rangers stuff
"inside source" and "esteemed reporter", per the Finnmedia clickbait news article.

Brooks hints that the Hurricanes could be interested in bolstering their goaltending department. As one alternative, the experienced journalist raised the Calgary Flames' Swedish guard Jacob Markström.

Larry Brooks isn’t a source. He isn’t even right about Rangers stuff
1. A long term Ranger guy
2. Stirring the pot against their biggest rival
3. Takes an unfounded rumor and runs with it weeks later
4. Is not up to speed with Canes Goalie turnaround
5. Gets to fill his required article space while ignoring their loss to Columbus

Only way I see Necas moved at the deadline is if it’s for a package to get Pettersson out of Vancouver who apparently isn’t giving the indication he wants to sign long term or maybe it’s a offseason move

Lazy reporting on the Canes:

-Tarasenko suggested
-Convo with Teravainen’s agent happened, nothing new to report, his, Pesce’s and Skjei’s contract negotiations will be revisited in the summer, in other words, take what we think your “value” is or buh-bye
