One of Holden, De Haan or Beaulieu are likely to be signed to push Harpur to #8. Any would be a real good number 7 if Jones can step in like we hope.

As for forward, don't look to sign so many vets. If we don't ever have a path for young players to come up and provide the solutions to our problems, the Rangers will be known as a team with no opportunity. Basically, we will go back to the 90s and early 00s image of the team that had a very bad reputation around the league. With a game that is getting younger every year, leave room for young players to feel comfortable and play their game. You will be a better team and get more players to sign with you as the years go.

This sounds good. Then commit. Keep Goodrow at 4C for one more year and he's the one to mentor a line with Cullye/Edstrom with the M.O. that all three will PK and can protect the lead/occasionally move up if Panarin is up to his old laughing and winking tricks/Kreider goal invisible, or trade Goodrow and sign a 4C with one of the kids getting a top 9 role, or Vessey sticks there until the TDL.

This is a stretch. Over the last 2 seasons, Jones played 28 games in the NHL and 106 games in the AHL. Players with that kind of resume don't get 1 mil. Drury didn't get him at a discount.

The Rangers seem to be sleeping pretty heavily on him. He played in 1 preseason game this past year (game 2 of 6) and was sent down shortly after, so he wasn't even an option to play in games 3-6.

In 2 years, he hasn't gotten a sniff of the NHL. People have reported improvement in his game, but he ended the year injured. Maybe he'll surprise me and make the team out of camp, but it seems unlikely.
I disagree. A talented defense prospect who’s already played some NHL games at 21 years old signed for 2 RFA years at a hit below his ELC is a good move. He easily could’ve said he only wanted 1 year or pushed for a salary in the 9s. Every dollar saved matters with this team. Budgeting 9-950 for 3LD but now only paying 812 could be a big deal in signing another player. Plus if it works out and he sticks he’s signed for another year at that # before he has to be moved.

Of the minor league/secondary players the Rangers have heading to UFA or RFA status, I'd do the following with them:

Keep
Ryan Carpenter (UFA)
William Lockwood (UFA)
Lauri Pajuniemi (RFA)
Libor Hajek (RFA)
Ty Emberson (RFA)
Brandon Scanlin (RFA)

Carpenter is not a bad 14th forward option and is a very good AHL player. Lockwood is also a viable option as a depth spare and AHL threat. Ty Emberson I believe will be an NHL player and they will definitely qualify him. Same for Scanlin although I don't like him as much.

Pajuniemi is gone, having signed in Sweden,,but I'd like to hold his rights for a couple season to see how he develops.

I know people hate Libor Hajek but as an 8 or 9 he's actually pretty decent and he's also fine in Hartford. For a QO of $840K or whatever they settle on I think he's still worth keeping around.

Walk
Tim Gettinger (UFA)
CJ Smith (UFA)
Wyatt Kalynuk (UFA)
Patrick Khodorenko (RFA)

Gettinger I'd like to keep as he's a good secondary scorer in Hartford, but even there he doesn't drive the play enough. He's not really an NHL player at this point, so he can walk.

CJ Smith was injured but didn't look great when healthy.

Kalynuk I like but I'm not sure there will be room for him in Hartford.

Khodorenko, coming off a big injury and being older in age, I'd let him go--AHL deal for him if he wants it.

Okay so what are you seeing that I’m not? He’s the same as Gallant

No, he isn't. He's definitely capable of making in game adjustments, believes in lineup matching, and has a different defensive structure. He's a dinosaur, like Gallant, but he's not the same. He won't leave the room to itself, will conduct more structured practices, and won't be afraid to impose consequences on players.

He's not Gallant 2.0.

Yeah because Laviolette is so innovative

I don’t think Robertson has any path to minutes whatsoever and he probably needs a change of scene

Genuinely curious here, when you say 'innovative' with regards to coaching what innovation would you hope to see from Laviolette?
Or, what innovative practices that have been successful does he shy away from?

...I don’t think Robertson has any path to minutes whatsoever and he probably needs a change of scene
Disagree that Robertson is already at change of scene spot
Barely 22, 2nd pro season cut short by injury, after 2 all star WHL seasons
NYR teams haven't had deep attrition recent seasons, that can change quick.
Kid has skill size and skating, still very young
May be stronger prospect than Jones and the rest of NYR D pipeline

pls stop adding vets, esp where $$$$ is involved = negative to cap

can we pls just develop Scanlin + Robertson

No, because we are trying to win now, not when Robertson and Scanlin are ready to contribute in the NHL, which is increasingly likely to be never.

Wheeler has captained a team that in back to back years had their coach quit midseason because he couldn’t get through to them (Stanley Cup runner up this year lol) and a well respected coach in Bowness call them out again, showing they learned nothing. He’s a terrible suggestion

He’s also a career loser and underachiever with some stacked Winnipeg teams

Career loser and underachiever? What? There is also only so much a captain can do…

I agree with all of this with the exception of Hajek who I think it’s time to move on from. I’d use that contract slot on a good veteran for Hartford. Preferably a puck mover as I’m hoping Jones is up in NY. With Robertson, Scanlin and Emberson down there it would be nice to have someone who could drive offense in lieu of Hajek. Harpur is likely to be down there too.

Karlsson is getting moved, he could do wonders for our defense who struggles with moving the puck.

Maybe get the Sharks to retain, and we send Goodrow back where he started along with Schneider? We may have to add something else. Then we could move Miller to his rightful spot with Fox, without worrying about handicapping the second pair by not having a PMD. Put Trouba in a smaller role where he belongs, and give him a puck mover in Jones.

Miller - Fox
Lindgren - Karlsson
Jones - Trouba

We wont pay the 2nd contract because of injury concerns for Lindgren, but you gave Kane a contract to play on the top line? lol
You're comparing the contracts they will get as similar?

The assumption is that Lindgren is looking for his payday. The other assumption is that Kane absolutely is not and picked the Rangers as his sole destination for a reason.

Career loser and underachiever? What? There is also only so much a captain can do…
You're right, there is only so much a captain can do, and he has failed at nearly all of them. Being a leader, being a good example for young players on and off the ice, being a useful, knowledgeable and vocal go between for the coaching staff, being someone that players can talk to about issues, be that on ice or off ice issues. Yeah, the Winnipeg lockeroom under his watch has deteriorated every year culminating in this year where they again underachieved and had a coach publicly and viciously slam the culture. Basically saying he was outright ignored by leadership that would rather be out for a skate.

Actually, everything that Trouba has been praised for in the Ranger's lockeroom has never been said about Wheeler. He has, however, been a huge point producer throughout his career. So maybe that is a good example on the ice?

Maybe, as a support player, on a team that already has a leadership core, he can have his ego checked and be part of a whole. I doubt that that is here, nor should we try. We are potentially dealing with our own issues.

What exactly do you think Lindgren will be asking for? His contract won’t be outrageous at all.

And you fooling yourself if you dont think Kane won’t be looking for a respectable number on a contract that could very well be his last. 7M-8M? No, but assuming the surgery goes well, he will still get 4-5M. He’s not signing with the Rangers for 1M.

Jones is at most a moderately better skater, and Robbie is a good skater.
Rob is pref otherwise and offers what you cannot teach -- size, reach, etc.
First choice just above scanlin
develop these kids learn from past mistakes

General agree, except as to Carpenter, that's a solid no.

Well said, and not the first time I can rely on your opinion to eloquently plead the case.

No, because we are trying to win now, not when Robertson and Scanlin are ready to contribute in the NHL, which is increasingly likely to be never.

It's time to admit bern is right on this.
Win now almost never works = epic fail.
Patience and proper build while taking advantage of opportunities b'c you are working from strength is only approach that works, esp when cheaper youth MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST be utilized to address cap

Winnipeg has been stacked with talent and a top 5 goalie his entire time there. Made it to the WCF one time. And Wheeler has consistently excused their play and drove Laine out of town. The opposite of what this team needs in the locker room

Dont wanna say career loser or underachiever, but Wheeler was the captain of a locker room known for its bullying. Trouba is now the captain of the rangers, and I doubt he wants that in this locker room.

Wheeler could've stopped it. Thats what a captain does.

IDK what people have against Carpenter. He was great in Hartford and if he's your 6th center/14th or 15th forward making $700K-$800K, I think you're in good shape.

Also for the positive contributions that the kids made in Hartford last season, it was really the play of the veteran players (particularly at forward) that got them into the playoffs and through a couple of rounds. Fritz is probably gone, Gettinger is probably gone, Pajuniemi is already gone. If you let Carpenter walk you've let go of 4 of your 7 top scoring forwards, with Cuylle potentially slated for a role in NY and Brodzinski always an option as a 13th forward. So in that instance, be prepared to throw Sykora and Othmann and Berard into the mix and be a fringe playoff team again. Hartford could use some continuity with the veterans.

I'm down to try something different.
