Even with having the Kakko pick, I’d be upset with the Rangers if they traded any first rounders for Fox. He want’s to play here. Carolina has zero leverage. Another team can trade for him and suffer a Buffalo situation like they did with Vesey. And if by some small chance he’s traded somewhere else and gets signed there, then ok it wasn’t meant to be.

Definitely don’t want to deal a first rounder for Fox. If Tampa gets bounced and we get their second round pick, I would be more than happy to deal that pick for Fox.

Exactly. Panarin is the right player at the wrong time. This idea of his being a free agent a once in a lifetime opportunity is a fallacy. Never see a player like Stamkos... Never see a player like Tavares... Never see a player like Panarin... Next year we'll never see a player like Hall.
Toronto scared the crap out of him with their insane, stalker presentation. He went running back to Tampa. If the right team made the right pitch, he may have walked. Getting a conversation is the important step.

The Stamkos thing is almost irrelevant, however, because Tavares created a new era. More and more players are going to go UFA. JT last year, Panarin, Duchene, Bob, Karlsson this year.

Finally, building a foundation through free agency doesn't work. We shouldn't care about the next Panarin. We should care about the next two drafts, letting the core meld, then smart trades from our glut, and then add a modest free agent to supplement the team.
It’s funny people still don’t know what went down with stamkos and it was blantantly obvious. Yzerman would not trade his rights, meaning the most he could get from another team was 7 years, he then offered an annual salary at 8 years which would have meant another team offering 7years and like 12 million a year just to equal Tampa 8 year no state tax contract payout.
Yzerman set it up so that either stamkos would have to give up like 15 million on the deal to go somewhere else or the other team having to give him 7yrs and over 12mil a year.
He handcuffed stamkos into staying. It just so happens, he was in Tampa to begin with and not say Long Island or Edmonton.
The rangers were in on stamkos, it just never materialized.

Wait until we can sign fox for free.

I would like to get him over ASAP, just to let Fox adjust to the NHL as fast as possible. The reson for it is just that its so crucial for us to get a platform on which the younger forwards can play to their strength. When your defense falters so does the entire team. Its not a cliche. When Pittsburgh tried to play with too high ambitions for their blueline, not even Malkin and Crosby could carry them. Almost all successful rebuilds in modern time have had a more mature blueline than forward crew.

Get rid of Shatty, its time. Now, not later. TDA should get PP time. Fox should get some PP time. Without top offensive minutes Shatty is getting 15-20 pts, not 40 pts. He would be unmoveable. Retain and do whatever is necessary.

You start with:
Staal-TDA
Skjei-Fox
Hajak-Pionk

If Pionk has a bit more even season, he should with more sheltered minutes, he could be used in a deal for a top D since he is cost controlled or moved for assets if we can get our hands on a top D. I have mentioned Subban at times, we could get someone this summer, or in a year or 2 or never. But its what that blueline would need.

Some random thoughts:

I can see Duchene signing back on with Ottawa in free agency. Ottawa is his hometown team and Ottawa will need to reach the cap floor somehow.

The Rangers need to start fixing the defense. I think they're anchored to Shattenkirk and Staal until the end of their contracts. Brendan Smith's buyout isn't that bad, but that cap hit in 2020 is a hard pill to swallow, especially if the Rangers plan to be in the playoff hunt with #2 overall still on his ELC. I lean towards keeping Smith for one more year. Worst case is that you bury him again in the minors if a trade is made to acquire a minute munching top 4 defenseman.

Speaking of which, I'm not worried about paying whoever #2 overall is after his ELC is up. Lundqvist, Staal, Shattenkirk, Smith will all be off the books. That's almost $25 million in cap space there. If the Rangers are in a position of having to pay #2 $8 million or $10 million, then their impact on the team and the rebuild indicates that the team will be ready to turn the corner again very soon.

Stay the course. Next year's top end looks exceptional. There are a couple of offensive RHD's that are looking like top 10 picks that I like. Very wing heavy otherwise, but I think that a player like Lundell is well within reach. Lafreniere, Byfield, Holtz, Lundell, and Gunler are my early top 10, with Drysdale and Rossi knocking on the door. Add one more elite prospect and then get to work.

2021-22 is the season I have circled on the long term calendar for making the playoffs again.
Your gonna disappointed if you think the rangers have 21-22 earmarked for the playoffs.

Don’t worry. Brooks alluded to it. Maybe if the rangers ended up with 4 1sts including the Tampa #31. Yeah then maybe they’d send the #31 to Carolina to get Fox in a year early. But if the lightning get knocked out, the rangers easily get to say hey, we don’t have the pick and your not getting any of the higher ones. And the our own 2nd is protected for a better trade. So take one of the other 2nds and move forward

It’s also prudent to remember that even if Stamkos was never giving serious consideration to going elsewhere it’s in his best interests to not let anyone know that. Have talks with other teams and make TB nervous. We’ll never know.

What’s the bet.

Your saying they won’t make the playoffs till 21-22 as well?

Or what you think they won’t make it next year and will in 20/21

What are your specifics

Ahh all talk. But I don’t want to put a grand down either. How bout a legitimate hundred dollar bet. Your ;) saying they don’t make the playoffs till 21-22. And I say they make it before then.

Even that Carolina should be grateful. But agreed that’s the pick id give up to get him here a year early. A late 2nd max.

Really should be a third

I agree in principle that it's "Time to get rid of Shattenkirk" but I don't think management sees it that way yet.

I just wake up every morning thankful that he was okay with a 4 year term instead of 6-7.

I'd get rid of Smith and Staal before I get rid of Shattenkirk

Sure, but Smith isn't impeding anyone's development playing on the wing.

I think one of the reasons why people are motivated to move Shattenkirk out right now is because we have some puck moving RHDs that he's potentially taking minutes from. Even the most anti-Pionk folks would probably rather see another season of what he's got than a 30 year old Shattenkirk who has reached 38 year old Dan Boyle levels of mobility.
