Ristolainen or Trouba?

I actually like Risto.. Think he could develop ito a soild 2-3. Has the size we need

Rob Rossi, Pens beat writer for the Athletic, was just on NHL Network Radio and thought Kessel to AZ would be more of a salary dump, maybe a conditional pick and a decent prospect, but the full salary going out. I know beat writers aren’t the best with trade speculation, (hi, Larry!), but, maybe the cost won’t be the 14OA.

Rossi is a muppet. Basically the Carpinello of Pittsburgh sports media.

That being said, I wouldn't be that surprised if a Kessel deal was more of a hockey trade than something based around the #14 pick. The Pens could definitely use some bodies in their prospect pool, but chopping 30 goals and 80 points out of a wannabe cup contender without some NHL talent coming back seems extreme. Even for Rutherford.

He has a really good relationship with Tocchet from while he was an assistant in Pgh. I don't think his NTC would be an issue.
In that case, it seems like this summer's obvious move. Team that desperately needs scoring and has trouble attracting free agents.

Kessel would accept a trade to Arizona (he’s tight with Tocchet) but Coyotes can’t inhale another $6.5 on 19-20 cap without moving salary. Already above this years payroll and still bleeding cash.

Looking back on the last few Stanley Cup Champions, there certainly is a measure of luck involved. Ron Ryan, then President of the Flyers told me how much he regretted trading Patrick Sharp to the Blackhawks for next to nothing. That turned out pretty good for Chicago. The Kings picked up Justin Williams for Patrick O’Sullivan. And on and on.

Perhaps this trade deadline and draft will be forever looked upon as our stroke of good luck.

Great point.

I also think that it is important to remember when you acquire players that you have an opening for, you give them a new shot. A new environment. Its valuable to have openings on the roster.

Then everyone cannot be unproven

How can we help them alleviate their cap problems, for a fee of course.

We can retain on Kreider and take back a contract.

I honestly think the ability to retain on Kreider is a hell of a selling point for a team who is on the fence about “going for it.”

Kevin Hayes with a few weeks on his contract brought back a first in the 20s and Lemieux.

Chris Kreider for a year, at half price, can bring back a significantly higher pick.

Plus we have other picks we can add to that deal. We got a lot of ammo.

Not only do I agree, I think that anyone who thinks #14 alone is enough to get a deal done is crazy. My perception is and has been that Kreider is valued higher than reality. May be a higher pick or a pick and prospect(s) Or maybe the Rangers extend him. I’m sure interested in seeing how this plays out.

Retention would be very important for Arizona.

I would agree but every year we see a league full of GMs who sit on their asses until late Feb and then throw picks at guys for a few weeks. It’s mind numbingly stupid, but it’s an annual tradition.
