Thinking that playoff round wins is THE factor in a player deciding on free agency. Neat.

There are way more players on that roster that would be sold off before Forsberg.

Christ...does thinking before speaking happen anymore?

Let me guess, THINKING is something you forgot to do putting this post together. Great players are traded as pending ufa's, or don't resign if they don't like their future outlook, do you need OBVIOUS examples? I suggest you put your thinking hat on for this one before another obnoxious response.

you can build through the draft and through smart ufa signings at the same time.

1. You cannot because UFAs are 8-12 years older than draftees. By the time draftees get into their prime around the age of 24-30, UFAs' careers are done or almost done.

2. UFAs artificially drop the spot where the team drafts. It's one thing is the team does well because kids are succeeding, it's another if you draft #14 instead of #5 because of a UFA. And at #14, you will get a worse player than at #5 the vast majority of the time.

3. There are NO smart UFA signings of stars. You can get someone like Grabner or Stralman whom nobody appreciates, but you gamble they will turn into someone good and not into Pirri or Voros, but when you sign stars, that's impossible. All 31 teams want to add a star player for no surrendered assets. All of them. But the reason you sign the guy is that the other 30 GMs think the contract you offered him is insane because if even 1 other GM thinks the contract isn't crazy, he will keep bidding. On occasion, your GM may be right when the other 30 GMs are wrong, but 99 times out of 100, if all the other GMs think the contract you're offering is insane, chances are the contract you're offering is insane. And that's why UFAs almost always wind up as huge mistakes - 30 of 31 GMs are rarely all wrong.

Very astute take on UFA's. One counter point though. If a particular UFA may be the missing piece he's worth more to the signer than the other 30 teams. Of course it's fools gold more often than not but you have to take your shot when you can. The window closes pretty quickly.

I'm honestly a little surprised that now that we're in line to get Kakko the Panarin stuff hasn't wilted a little bit.

All of a sudden we're looking really good at the wing position moving forward.

If you mean to trade Kreider then sign Panarin? I somewhat get it then since there's a gap left but if you want to keep Kreider? All of a sudden we're looking at a lot of money all spent at the winger position, especially if Chtytl stays at LW.
