I'd just remain patient. There's no reason to break the bank right this second. Gourde would be a good option but there are, and will be, many other players who will be available who can help going in to next season.

Hertl
Trochek
What will Detroit do with Larkin?
What will Vegas do with Karlsson?
What does Strome want on a medium length or long term deal?
What offers will be out there for Kreider and will he accept a waive of his NMC?
What does Vancouver do with Horvat?
If Chicago continues to bottom out this season, what do they do with Toews?

Drury has the pieces to find the right guy(s). But I wouldn't be overpaying for a guy like Gourde.

I wouldn’t overpay, and I do not believe the package I mentioned was an overpayment, to the contrary, it’s probably still not enough, but I do believe those two pieces put us right there at the top of the league for contention.

I'm on that Rodrigues hype train. A poor mans Gourde.... but after this season, not so much

Was hoping Pittsburgh would taper off and we could acquire him.... now it'd have to be in Free Agency
He has increased his value quite a bit. Can’t say I saw it coming with him but I guess that’s the Crosby effect. Never liked Crosby

Good post, but Toews should never be mentioned again. He has nothing left.

Not waste the claim? This isn't fantasy sports. Your waiver wire spot doesn't change when you claim a player. Neal is the only player on waivers. Claiming him changes nothing for future waiver options.
Was not aware. Thought it was based on standings then resetting if used or not. If I’m wrong then I’m wrong

I wonder what the cost on Giordano would be. We know the Rangers are interested from the summer and I assume he will be highly sought after by contending teams. I personally would deal a 1st to get him, but maybe Seattle is interested in Chytil if they think hell thrive with a top 6 role.

Chytil + Blues second rd pick for Giordano? Still seems a bit light

That seems insanely high to me

I can see Chytil being traded but we have to be careful to value him appropriately. He has struggled this season but that entire line has struggled and he is 22 years old with 215 NHL games under his belt, all mainly at center. He shouldn't and hopefully won't be traded for any rental. That would be horrible asset management.

Now if you are talking Larkin, Horvat, Karlsson? Then he enters the conversation as a possibility.

The trade to make is still with Vegas. Reilly Smith as a rental and Wild Bill Karlsson as the 2nd line center up the middle. Vegas has Stephenson and Eichel up the middle with a myriad of wing options. They burned all of their futures on the Eichel deal. The Rangers have a need up the middle.

Karlsson is making $5.9 million for 5 more years after this one. Does Vegas want him on their third line making almost $6 million for the next 5 years? He's third in the pecking order once Eichel is back. The two teams match well in terms of needs.

Rangers get:
Reilly Smith (UFA)
William Karlsson (25% cap hit retained)

Vegas get:
Vitali Kravtsov
Zac Jones
Matt Robertson
2022 1st

Rangers pay the 1st and another defense prospect to get retention on Karlsson.

Chytil then dealt for an established 3rd line center like Faksa out of Dallas.

Kreider-Zib-Kakko
Panarin-Strome-Smith
Laf-Karlsson-Goodrow
Rooney-Faksa-Reaves/Hunt
Goat extra

Rangers let Strome walk in UFA. Next year they have

Kreider-Zib-Kakko
Panarin-Karlsson-Goodrow
Laf-Faksa-Berard/Cuylle/Othmann
Hunt-UFA//Barron/Rooney back?/Reaves

I think the young wingers in the system are very much in the mix for spots next year. I think Rooney is brought back for insurance. Barron should also be on the team in some capacity. He and Faksa may yo-yo up and down between the 3rd and 4th line to start out.

That's a well rounded forward corps and the Rangers get a run with Strome and Smith to go for it this year.
Given the timing of the Pacioretty injury, I think Vegas can get by moving one big contract. I’ll look hard at Smith and if Karlsson is available, I’ll look real hard. Karlsson would be a prime candidate to bring in a third team for salary retention. I don’t think they would want to move Karlsson but it’s worth asking about. Don’t be confused, Karlsson is the second line center in Vegas…he wildly popular there and an excellent two way player.

Vegas may also want to move Brayden McNabb and I’m listening on that too.

Got to think Gallant would be over the moon if the Rangers got any of these guys.

Small note for those arguing for Gourde, he is a year older than William Karlsson who people are complaining is 'too old'.

Karlsson
Soon to be 29 years old
$5.9m cap hit
5 years left
2020-2021
8 points in 20 games this season (0 points on PP)
+4.8 CF% Rel
+3.6 FF% Rel
48.4% faceoff percentage last year

2021-2022
39 points in 56 games last season (8 points on PP)
+3.1 CF% Rel
+1.0 FF% Rel
54% face off percentage this year

Gourde
30 years old
$5.16m cap hit
3 years left

19 points in 25 games this season (3 points on PP)
+4.9 CF% Rel
+4.5 FF% Rel
48.7% faceoff percentage last year

2021-2022
36 points in 56 games last season (6 points on PP)
-2.5 CF% Rel
-1.0 FF% Rel
51.2% face off percentage this year

I think if given the choice, I would lean towards Karlsson. Especially based on the valuation some people have on Gourde around here

I'd rather target someone younger than Gourde or Karlsson. I know we talked about him a lot last offseason but I still think Cirelli would be a really good fit. What would it take to get him out of Tampa? Georgiev + something? Brian Elliott isn't reliable as a backup.

No f***ing idea lol.

It'd cost a lot and would probably start with some combo of the 2022 1st, Chytil, Nils or Jones and another piece.

I'm not sold that Seattle would want to move Gourde just yet either, but if they really want to boost their futures cache, he's one of their most valuable trade chips.

That's a no from me dawg.

No prime assets for anything that's a rental or 38 years old.
