7 Games, in 15 days to the trade deadline.

Jets, Sabres, Pens, Canes, Wild, Devils, Caps.

Club has won 6 out of their last 10 games. They pretty much suck at tanking, yet they aren't good enough to make the playoffs. Wheres does that leave them?

Mired in Mediocrity!

It was fun beating the Leafs though.
I think the the TDL will make them better at tanking.

It's ridiculous that we've wanted:
#1 center
right hand shot
shoot first player

We have all those things in one player on a GREAT contract and people want to trade him. I would not trade him straight up for the Ott 1st despite everyone always thinking the grass is always greener...

There is a saying... if Paul Gaustad can return a 1st, anything is possible.

Please don't take me wrongly, I hope if traded he can return more than I think he would.

Which is basically why I think Gorton is in a tricky position. I'm not thinking any available return is going to be seen as fair unless maybe if it's a more complicated deal.

As mentioned countless times, it all comes down to what the Rangers feel is a building block. Then again, that was speculation on the part of Bobby Mac so perhaps there's flexibility there.

Then the next big question is whether or not the Rangers can actually sign the players people are advocating for in place of Kreider. Sure, Kevin Fiala, Dante Fabbro, and a pick plus Panarin sounds better than "just" Kreider, but you can't assume any player will sign here. Not unless you're totally content with the end result just being the pieces you dealt for.

BTW, my phone autocorrects Fiala to Goals. That's a freaking omen if I've ever seen one.

No you can't assume that, but in the situation the Rangers find themselves in, even if they missed out on Panarin or the other big FA's, it would just be a continuation of the rebuild and would theoretically give them an even better shot to get Lafreniere or whoever else is at the top of the draft.

Plus they likely/hopefully saved some cap space for when hopefully all of Chytil, Kravtsov, Miller, Shestyorkin, Lafreniere or whomever, etc need long term extensions right off their entry levels over the next 3-6 years.

I know it gets brushed off, but the Rangers are going to likely have a ton of 2nd contract looming, while I think many will be bridges (Howden, Hajek, etc), it's possible some will also be more expensive long term deals. Added to that if they bridge ADA, Pionk, Buch , Georgiev, they will also be needing new deals or whoever they replace them with will need some sort of contracts.

Yeah unfortunately the definition of a "foundational" piece varies from person to person.

A foundational piece for me is either a top 15-20 prospect in the league, top 2-3 pick, or a young player in the NHL making an impact.

Kreider's situation is similar to McDonagh's last year. If McDonagh had another season on his contract, I think they would have walked away from that trade with a Sergachev-esque player. But he didn't, and I don't think any of the pieces are deemed foundational, or at least what I would consider. Based on the reporting it seems like Hajek was the biggest sticking point of that deal, so maybe he's the foundational piece?

Kreider is in the same boat.

Lol the Canadiens are going to ride this weird hot streak straight to a garbage pick and keep being decent but not good enough to do anything.
I agree with you but I hate to admit it they have been playing well (so has Price). It is crazy how listening to 690 montreal in the summer how they talked about wanting to hopefully get a top 2 pick this upcoming draft to now wanting to trade for a guy like Panarin and go for it.

Im not trading Zibby unless im getting Ottawas 1st... there is absolutey zero reason to trade our best player.

Would you rather get Ottawas 1st than Kaprizov??

That is pretty wild. Not sure I would do Hughes for Kaprizov, probably but it’s not clear cut. And that pick is only 20% tops to get you Hughes.

I would rather take Kaprizov over a package of Necas, Tolvanen and Vesalainen AINEC.

If Minny would deal Kaprizov for Zibanejad you got to pull the trigger.

I am under the impression that the NYR brass would want to be competitive next year. You can't continue to suck and tank and breed a winning culture.

I guess none of the beat reporters covered practice today to see if there were any lineup ramifications off last night's game.

The Rangers tweeted that Claesson was a full participant in practice today but is still a ways away from getting back in.

Zibanejad is not getting traded. He's our best center since MARK MESSIER.. 25 years old and on a sweetheart deal..

Ideal Scenario, to me at least

Trade Hayes, Zucc, Shattenkirk, McQuaid, Buch
Sign Hayes, Zucc and a McQuaid or someone in that mold.
Have a 2019 draft similar to 2018, if not better. Get another Kravstov, Miller and Lundkvist etc
Sign Karlsson
Compete while letting the kids develop

Kreider Zibs Zucc
Chytil Hayes Kravstov
Names Howden Andersson
Vesey Strome Fast

Skjei Karlsson
Staal ADA
Hajek McQuaid-type

I'd be choosing the contracts really carefully, pure expensive, longer term UFA contracts in general work out so seldom that is not where I'd like to see them commit.

If I viewed this rebuild in the stage where a UFA contract could be the missing piece towards really contending, I'd feel differently but I think this is closer to the start than the end.
But that is not answering the question. You do not want to commit to any contracts or at least, not the ones that are going to be needed to keep a Kreider or a Zbad. You also said that you do not want a bunch of 20 year olds running around with no veteran leadership. So by that standard, you cannot have any players that are older than 26. So again, who do you want leading the young players through the rebuild?

Wanting a foundation piece back for a player who has this and next year left seems like they are expecting something out of the realm, yet like RB said what the Rangers see as a foundation piece could be different.

I just hope they are not stuck with a Backes, Ladd, Eriksson type when they are ready to maybe compete again.
To me it means he’s basically not available barring some team losing their marbles

They aren't bad. Less of a PDO team than the AV Rangers. They aren't on a hot streak now, they just had a cold streak earlier when the goaltending was awful.

If we were in their position, I'd find the people wanting to watch bad hockey and complaining about picking 20th overall instead of 10th ridiculous
