the whole situation stinks
even if you trade for Eichel while being fine with the idea of "well he won't play this year and we'll deal with Zibanejad in the offseason" it sends a clear "we don't want you here and are moving on" message to Zibanejad which could affect the whole locker room
Not to mention trading roster assets and causing those shakeups right before/as the season starts
Making a huge trade like that right now is nuts

I don't think it sends that message necessarily. I think it could also send a "Hey look at this team we're putting together, do you want to be a part of it?" message. Yeah, he might have to take less, but how much is it worth to Zib to play in NY and play for the Rangers that has the talent it has on its roster? They should be asking him that question regardless.

zibs would only get traded at deadline if team was out of contention. If team is battling for playoffs and u trade zib bc you dont want him to walk, u would lose the locker room. Unless u got someone to immediately replace him and keep the team in contention. Trading him for futures would gut the room.

Its not a video game where players and coaches don’t have feelings.

This team is not in any position to make noise in the playoffs this season. If the plan is to go in on Eichel and the Rangers are a borderline playoff team, Mika gets traded if he doesn't want to sign a team friendly deal.....and Eichel slides in when healthy.

Now.....if they can get buffalo to retain a million and zibs wants to stay a Ranger and have some playoff success and possible runs at a cup.....maybe he takes a home town discount and stays. Bettman did say the cap will rise a million dollars a year for the next couple years and then im sure we will be back to the normal 2-3 million increase after that.......

We have the prospects to maybe bite the bullet and keep Zibs and Eichel........I also dont think Laf and KK will light it up this year, so their next deals should be manageable.......... figure it out Drury !!

Exactly.....strome gets moved, or Chytil, plus some prospects and a pick. Then you have a one, two punch of Zibs and Eichel. If Zibs wants to play for the next 6+ years on a contender, maybe he takes a discount to stay here.

I hope he does. The guy is worth every penney, but we cant afford both at full price.

why not?

We have everything we need to make noise in the playoffs this season.

I don't expect to go to the Conference Finals off the bat but I wouldn't be surprised.

Our potential is astronomical imo. Experience is the issue. Sometimes it matters. Sometimes it dont.

thinking about it a little more, I think we make the playoffs, can maybe make a little noise, but I just dont see all too much happening this year. I'd love to be proved wrong, but I think this is a year of progress and solid learning for about half the team on what it takes...... and next season is where it really comes together. I'd love to have Zibs and a healthy Eichel as the one two punch, with most of the bottom 6 remaining in tact. That, plus a more seasoned D corp........is something that will make a lot of noise next year and years beyond.

If they don’t accept that deal than move on. No one in hell is Drury giving up another more for a player that is going to absolutely destroy our cap and not help us this season.

He's not gonna destroy our cap, he's gonna be a bargain at 10 million. The beauty of getting him now is we can keep him and Zib for a playoff run. If the trade was made today he'd likely be playing by new year at a pro rated cap. I'm on the fence if i want him or not but whoever is in the #1, c spot is gonna be 10 mill, we have nothing in the minors.

I hate to point this out but a lot of the arguments for keeping and resigning Zbad are the exact same ones we heard with resigning Staal and Giradi.

Won't or can't trade X,Y,Z going into the playoffs while in contention. We can make noise with X,Y,Z!

I am not for Eichel but clearly the thought would be to get a younger, stud center since Zbad is going to be on his last contract and its highly unreasonable for that contract to be worth the cap hit in the last 2-4 yrs.

I don't think Eichel is that anymore, but Zbad's contract isn't cut and dry either

that will never happen unless Buffalo eats 50%.

imo That's why trading for Eichel doesn't make sense unless he's the replacement to Zibs. Even that's a risk with his injury.

If there's one way to destroy this entire rebuild, this would be a good start

Not exact comparisons.

- The Rangers were cup contenders when those guys were signed.
- Both players were clearly in decline when they were signed.

The Rangers are not contenders. Zibanejad doesn't look like hes in decline either. This conversation is going to get even more annoying this year if he remains unsigned and goes off (which is what I expect.)

Keep in mind I don't want to hand Zibanejad a blank check. I think anything over 5 years would be a mistake (I'm not deluded enough to think that he would sign for 5 either) but the comparison is Zibanejad for x amount of dollars vs Eichel at 10x5+ what ever you give up to get him. I don't think they'd trade Zibanejad if they're in it for a playoff spot this year even if he remains unsigned. They won't be able to resist the temptation of running him and Eichel for how ever long they can. Even if they're in a spot without Eichel, the Playoffs are 100% the goal this year.

Personally I'd rather venture to door 3 where its neither and you try to figure out that situation some other way. People are afraid of door 3 because its unknown, but it's actually probably the best option. Zib's next contract will almost certainly be a bad one. Eichel at 24 has already missed a ton of time with injuries. People need to step away from the mindset that its one or the other. It can't be both, but neither is probably the safest (and smartest) way to go.

If its one or the other? I'd probably go Zibanejad. Devil you know vs the one you don't. Plus those assets are still here and can still be used.

You do realize that sometimes people can expand on a topic and add something, right? Jesus f***ing Christ.
Sometimes, yes. In your case,:laugh::laugh::laugh:. We get it, development is as important as drafting, Nils has a presence on the bench, and the Syracuse Crunch are the AHL blueprint. We heard you. And we heard your young, ironically well-groomed (because he's being groomed before our eyes), agreeable protege. Get serious.
