McKenzie’s wording makes it seem like Gorton would want a redux of Brassard for Zibanejad with Kreider. I’d want something more tangible than a prospect, and ideally it’s a kid playing well in professional hockey in some capacity.

Rangers added ~6 years in that deal, which meand they could be looking for someone that’s from the 2013-15 drafts. Plenty of names from those first rounders are guys on the cusp of breaking out and solidifying themselves for the next 6-8 years.

I’d hate to deal Kreids, and I think he’d be a great piece to augment this next core of Rangers. However, if Gorton can get that type of value again, it only serves as an extension of this next window, while also minimizing risk of a bigger contract with depreciating value. I don’t think Kreids will slow down, but the risk is there.

The one thing that’s woefully apparent is that we need to solidify their secondary scoring moving forward.

That at least to me would make some sense, however Brassard had some term left, I think 2 or 3 years.

I was bored and then made up this funny, End Game inspired, cleaning house TDL scenario holding nothing back. I dedicate this to RB. Going full Bern is fun. Hope he enjoys it - although I retained $$ on Smith.

Peace

At least @Trxjw since this is his brain child
I heard exactly what McKenzie said. I paraphrased it last night. The Rangers aren’t shopping Kreider, but are willing to listen. The cost will be high. Bob also said that Kreider fits in with what the Rangers are building. To be honest, the whole conversation reiterated what we’ve discussed here.
And that’s exactly what Gorton should be doing with everyone, but it’s also important to have a framework for what this team will look like in 3 years with the current pieces you have. Like you said, we’ve already covered most of the bases in this discussion.

Yep, and I could see that as a reason why we’d get a younger professional (AHL/Europe) rather than an NHLer back. Kreids also has the toolkit that most GMs crave, so mayeb they’ll overlook the term for the type of player they’re acquiring. The money issue also played a big factor in the Brass deal for the Sens.

And we're right back to Stastny as a comparable, and the the whole prospect or a first conversation for Zucc.

It's funny when the outside world catches up to what's been discussed on here for months, or in Zucc's case, close to a year.

My gut feeling remains Kreider doesn’t get moved, and Rangers end up signing him long-term. Some of that may be wishful thinking, but, I really do not see a team capable of meeting Gorton’s price willing to pay that price.

Is it July 1?
Yes. You can extend a player with term up to 1 year before their contract expires, which is July 1st.

If a player signed a 1-year deal, you cannot extend them until January 1st, I believe. It's to stop teams from signing a UFA to a 1-year deal, then immediately turn around and sign them to another, longer term deal, effectively circumventing the cap and term restrictions.

Minnesota is intriguing. Koivu tore his ACL on Tuesday night. Their 1st won’t be at the end of the first round.

I agree, I'm not sure I understand the Rangers plan with Kreider.

At the draft he is going to be worth which pick when draft picks are worth their most?

If they hold on to him until next deadline, and he has not yet signed an extension, he is going to have a ton of leverage to pretty much ask for whatever he could get as a UFA, maybe even ask for more than that.

I'm thinking the Rangers putting themselves in that position is shortsighted.

I mean what if he asks for 9M, 7 years, full NMC, are they going to sign it given their other option is a 1st and something?

The only way in my mind holding on to Kreider makes sense is if they've already worked out some extension, or his current return value is already pretty close to only a 1st and something.

I agree. I actually read such open “maybe” talk to closer to a sign that they are actually shopping him. Trying to get the offers up by explicitly saying the kind of piece they’d want back.

Yeah Hayes will be the last guy to go. Most likely wont play those last 2 games prior to the TDL.

Hopefully we start to see more significant moves before that. They waited pretty long last year too.

Keep Kiiril Kaprizov in your prayers when Minnesota's name comes up.

But reading up on their new GM, it seems like he is realizing KKs value... I wouldn't do Hayes + Lias for Kaprizov and not think twice.

Gorton is a patient man. Will probably wait until that weekend.

Though I think someone like McQuaid is likely to be moved early than later, since he's not bringing back big pieces. Zuccarello and Hayes will be the later ones.

I think it comes down to what people consider as a "building block" kind of player, and whether or not the Rangers are sold on this Kreider being the Kreider they're going to get for 5+ more years. He hasn't crossed the 30g mark yet. He seems like he will this season but we've seen him go cold before. Is he a $7M player for this team? Or is his long term value best served by selling high and continuing to restock the pool?

There are scary few drums beating to stir up interest in Shatty. Is his value improving?

I also think its underrated what a negative impact it has on the younger Ds to have someone like Shatty eat up the offensive minutes. Retain 50 and get him out of dodge.
