While i agree with you on everything regarding TDA, teammates fighting is pretty common.
Not disagreeing but in this case it wasn't the same and I should have clarified. It was just another incident involving TDA which by this time was the final straw.

Man, if I had a nickel for all the times I had to sift through CCTV footage of incidents when I was a high major DOBO. You know why? Not cause the coach gave an S. It's so we could appease the administration and AD.

Only way I can rationalize anything more behind the scenes with Buch is perhaps that he was considered "not serious enough." Absolutely nothing to base that on other than how well liked and happy-go-lucky he seemed, as well as how funny & candid he often was in the media. Yes I realize how ridiculous that sounds but this is the NHL we are talking about.

I have been trying to rationalize it for a good while.

Myt guess is that it just came down to cap, thinking they were going all in on a center in a trade that didn't transpire--something to that effect.

If we kept Buch and re-signed him, we'd be sitting with $5-6 million in cap space right now.

Buch could raise his game at times and could play with intensity. That's something he was still developing.

In a perfect world, we'd have known Laf was on the way, traded Kreider, and re-signed Buch.

Which administration? Clinton? Bush? Obama? Trump? Why did you have to appease Anthony DeAngelo? With your dancing? What!

I believe this is when Mike Francesa hand waves you and tells you to do something productive like read a book or help the elderly, lol.

Our current 2C problem actually somehow stems from return in the Stepan trade. Lias was a reach C pick that busted and Tony was a high risk/high reward pick that turned out to be worth nothing of value to be used to acquire any assets (that he once likely had). We otoh got Strome for a discount in dumping Spooner out West. And here we are…

The prescient move was trading DeAngelo before last season. It's reported that Gorton tried, but how hard did he try? Maybe package him up with another player for a center or center prospect? Meaningless to really talk about it more at this point.

Weird we’re sitting here with 12M of cap space still…
Capfriendly puts us at 8.8 mil cap space.

Did you neglect the buyouts?

We also can't commit to anything more than a 1 year contract unless we move guys out because of all the contracts needed for next years' raises.

Also, probably round 4 mil of that cap space is being allocated towards rookie bonuses. Can't have those bonus hits carry over with how we have our contracts set up right now.

So, 4.8ish mil in cap space? But for 1 year unless we ship someone out.

It is something, not nothing, but nothing astronomical.

Not trying to be a dick but I’m skeptical that there’s much to support that.

On the topic of if you must play to improve: At the same time, what could support this, or prove that it is false for that matter?

I strongly believe it, ie that you must “play” somewhere to improve. It’s not black and white, but I definitely think there is a correlation. The reason for this is just that over the years, I’ve noticed a very strong trend in how players develop. I also think it can supported by logical reasoning, it makes sense. Like what makes playing in the attacking zone hard in the NHL? Many of those things are very hard to practice. It’s just mostly the speed element, how do you learn to think faster and more clearly.

But can I prove it? I think it’s hard. Would basically require an alternative universe, the ability to save/load…

I was just looking fast at capfriendly, a bit surprised that there are so many teams with cap space. Many teams still have a few key RFA's left to sign. But there is like what, 10-11 teams with around 8-10m in cap space?

BTW, anyone else find it kind of funny that Gorton referred to Milan Lucic as having been a 'down town street brawler' in Vancouver? Seems like its a bit more serious and JG made it sound...

Lias' ceiling was pretty much a solid 3C - so the pick did nothing to address the 2C problem. He might still get there with LA, who knows.

Did you mean major domo? Cool word:
Majordomo - Wikipedia

A majordomo is a person who speaks, makes arrangements, or takes charge for another. Typically, this is the highest (major) person of a household (domūs or domicile) staff, a head servant who acts on behalf of the owner of a large or significant residence.
A majordomo may also, more informally, be someone who oversees the day-to-day responsibilities of a business enterprise.

But what does "appease the administration and AD"? Only meaning I heard of is Art director?

Ultimately, I think it comes down to that you cannot build a team with draft picks alone. You must have a "machine" that gives you advantages. How kids develop after you picked them, how you can have flawed players over-perform due to their surroundings, smart cap management, a competitive locker room.

We have had so many debates back and forth whether this organization should rebuild over the years.

There are no short cuts. If you want to contend, do everything better than everyone else. Its easy to sit there and look around and say 'oh they are better than us, but they got this or that player high in the draft'. But you cannot just replicate that by sucking.

5.1m with 14F, 8D and 2G.
Hang onto it until we need an 8-10 million buck guy on his last year of his deal/or somebody we make room to keep if they still have term left , at the halfway mark.....a rental maybe of sorts or someone that is acquired for a player/second round pick and upped for a first rounder if we resign or win a round or two .....something along those lines . That pretty well leaves the door open for almost anybody out there making 10 million or less.....and gives us a shot in the arm for a playoff run of some kind. I'm sure many names are open for discussion as teams look to rebuild with a couple of nice pieces courtesy of the Rangers . It's the Ranger way !

I wonder if we had any talk's with Chara's representatives, or if he were considered, before we signed Nemeth. Think he would have potential to have a bigger impact than Nemeth. Add more toughness, character, having won before. I mean, sure he isn't "good" anymore. But while being a pylon in a few situations, he is good in others still.

Operating income and revenues are down. I think these organizations are being careful. We’re not out of the Covid mess yet.

Chara wants to win a Cup imo. He’s only hanging on for that. Imo, Chara is in the same situation as Thornton and Florida is closing the gap.

Yeah, and I understand last year for sure. Don't think he want to have to assume a big role and we were so far from the Cup. But this year I think it is a bit different. Like I am not saying that we are as close to winning a Cup as anyone else in the East, of course not, but 'picking a winner' has proven to be really hard right? We should be a PO team and who knows what will happen.

And its the money side, none of our cap space will carry over. There are very few obvious cap dumps with 1 year left out there that team's would like to get rid of. I don't think Drury can turn our cap space into a 1st or a 2nd rounder. We could have spent 4m on a 1 year deal for Chara, right? There is a big difference between .850 and 4m.

I get it but think about Chara. He can sit out and wait to see who emerges as a contender and sign later too. Sure, he may not get an opportunity yet doubt he wants an 82 game schedule followed by a grueling playoff.

I’d much rather have Chara than Thornton as a “locker room” guy. I can’t understand how teams that aim to contend keep bringing in Thornton like he’s going to help.
Unless there’s some stat that correlates beards and smugness with playoff success.
