That would be why you bring in someone on a PTO. Definitely don't sign them unless a stroke of bad luck occurs and the young players aren't ready or an injury happens.

If 1 of them isn’t ready to ease into 3rd pair minutes with a vet partner like Nemeth, we Have completely overvalued/miscast what they prospects are and will become.

Jones looked solid in his 18 odd games, Nils and Schneider are most likely as good as advertised as well. I’m pretty sure, especially with how they brought miller along last season, they are comfortable that at least 1 is ready to step up and contribute.

I don't think it's a David Desharnais situation where you've got the one guy Andersson, and you're in trouble if your one guy isn't ready so you bring in some competition for the spot. Until they make a trade they have so many of these guys that that itself is kind of the issue

Jones already looks good with 4 points in 10 games while not appearing out of place.

Lundqvist getting time in AHL is not an issue as it should help him get used to the NA ice, but I'd love for him to earn a spot right out of the gate. Any mix of those guys being in the for a full year would be great development imo and it's right on track.

I don't think this is true.

Jones has 10 games of pro experience and you'd be asking for him to play on his off side. Schneider has 2 in a watered down AHL. Robertson has no pro experience period. Nils has a bunch, but zero on NA ice.

Unless one of them is just undeniable in camp, it may not be a bad idea to start ALL of them in Hartford. It'll give the WHL guys a chance to adjust to a higher pace, Nils to adjust to a higher pace and rink size, Jones (and Nils) to get prime PP minutes, etc. The AHL is a pretty grindy league, so it may serve the smaller players well to do go down and learn to deal with that in an environment where they won't cost the big team points rather than ride the bench for most of the 3rd period in every game where they're up by 1 or 2.

Remember McDonagh didn't make the team out of camp during his rookie season either (which was his D+4 season.) He is the 2nd best defenseman this team has had since the lockout and it took him all of half a season to become the best defenseman on a contending team.

I hope that Drury is looking at the RFA market and considering offer sheets. Not saying that there is someone there that makes sense. But wouldn’t rule it out per se. OS up to 8.2m is still only one 1st round pick (and a 2nd and a 3rd).

Robertson is 99% AHL bound, Jones plays both sides and actually had a bigger role thrust on him due to injuries last season and didn’t look bad at all. Nils and Schneider, if as good as advertised should have no trouble stepping up and filling that role.
Miller was asked to do much more last season, and was a success for the most part. None of these players, on a better overall team should have to fill the role he did last season.

Rangers will never offer sheet a player while Sather still has a role in upper management in some capacity

It's very rare to have six D regularly getting PK time and I don't see any of them getting PK minutes over Fox, Trouba, Lindgren, Nemeth and Miller.

Plus they would probably not need to waive either of Tinordi or Bitetto, just Hajek if they end up signing him at all.

Gonna have to, unless they want Fox/lindgren still shouldering the full load. Trouba’s injury certainly had a huge effect on Fox, but they were riding the shit out of him in every which way they could.
I would love if Fox could play every minute, but he’s not a machine. Eventually he’s going to wear down. My guess is they want him playing the most pivotal minutes, especially 5v5 and on the PP. he’s a good pker, but he’s also not they biggest guy, it’s not smart business to have a 9 mill asset presumably take a Unnecessary beating taking hits and blocking shots on the Pk when someone else can

Fox averaged 24:42/game. That's 11th among dmen. 17 played at least 24 mins. That is very typical for a top dman. In April Fox averaged 25:03/game. That is 8th among dmen. Again - perfectly normal for a top dman in the league.

In the last 10 games of the year (which Trouba did not play) his ice time went up to 25:34 which was second most in that time frame but again...we're not talking a huge difference. That's one more shift per game that he had been getting and top guys like Doughty have played more than that each of the last 10.

I will never understand why people want to play their best players LESS. What that accomplishes is making the team worse. It is not like Fox is out there playing 33 mins/game (like Chabot does sometimes). He gets perfectly typical usage for an elite 1D.

It’s not hard to understand. It makes sense to play your best players a lot when you are competing. When you are trying to develop your next crop of best players, who will hopefully be good enough to win playoff series (unlike the current group), it is not illogical to want to give them TOI even if there are better current options.

This team was a false contender last year and they burned a development year for critical players moving forward chasing the illusion. We have a shit ton of uncertainty on the roster right now, which is frankly delaying critical roster construction decisions, directly because of this philosophy.
