We got leveraged. No one else was bidding and his NMC was kicking in momentarily. Chayka held firm and we blinked. He was degrading and we took a take it or leave it offer. Kreider is no such scenario.

What's giggle-able is regarding Skinner as a legit top liner prior to this season. He had concussion issues, poor seasons and a team hell bent on moving him.

Add in the Don Waddell factor.

*With tonight’s results, the Rangers are now six points out of a 20 percent chance of the 1st overall draft pick (while tied for having played the second least games in the league)

For a while we got more points than we deserved but lately we haven’t exactly been lucky. Unless Gorts sells off sooner rather than later I have a hard time seing us really contending for a top shot at FOA.

The impression I’ve gotten from the little I’ve watched Hughes is that he as a player is the spitting image of Patrick Kane.

Yeah he is good, of course it’s hard to know if he will become as good as Kane did but the sky is the limit for that kid. I am not sure where the negativity is coming from.

So if we sell everyone to tank for real, when can we realistically start to compete? Let’s say we trade one of Kreider/Ziba, Hayes and Zucc as well as all vet Ds we can find takers for.

I think the answer to that question is the key. And I also think that we have a bit offside expectations on how fast kids can start to contribute.

What do you need to contend for a PO spot in this league? Roughly 10 good forwards and 5 Ds maybe, goaltending, 4-5 of the forwards must be good top 6 and a couple good top line guys. A complete blueline, PP and PK ability, nowadays especially mobility.

Who fills those spots?
X 2019 pick
Y 2020 pick
Z 2021 pick
Chytil
Lias
Howden
Who are the other 4 guys?

When are the above guys ready to carry that load? 6-7 years?

5-6 Ds?
Skjei
Miller
Pionk?
TDA?
Keane/Lundkvist/and the likes
You still miss that top guy. Use our highest pick the coming years to get that D — if he is available? When are they ready? I would say that it would take a handful of years to round out that blueline.

Given how demanding this sport and league is — you also more than anything must have a great culture on the team.

Before we get to a level where we are a ‘safe’ PO team, can start to be described as a contender, I think you must estimate that it will take at the least 6-7 years. Somewhere around 2025/26.

I am definitely undecided if this is the best option or not. Think it’s hard to tell. But I do feel that sometimes the hardship of ‘dumping everyone’ and starting from scratch is underrated.

I also want to touch on another subject.

We discuss a lot about if Chytil has elite potential. If Kravtsov has elite potential. If Lias has elite potential. It Buch has elite potential. And we often come away pretty sceptical, since they aren’t super standouts at whatever level they play.

The thing is, when you look at a big sample size of top players in this league it gets very obvious that a hockey player is constructed by what he does from like the age of 14 to the age of 22-24, at least. Talent at the age of 18 does not decide how good you will become when you are 24. When you watch an 18 y/o you do not have an unclear view of a painting, you are watching a part of a finished painting but the rest is yet to be painted. How good will the painting look when it’s finished?

Kucherov isn’t the player he is today due to the talent he showed at 18, he is a 110 pts player, instead of a 60-70 pts player, thanks to what he has done from 18 to today really. Super shape. So devoted and consistent, focused.

It’s about working harder and making sure that you develop so well that it put your development after the draft in the top handful percent of your peers, of the top talents, you compete with. I don’t think you even remotely today can say that X or Y or Z will become elite players. The conditions for it may be in place, but basically the real work is yet to be done.

Jeff Skinner is a legit top line power figure skater and 3 time 30 goal scorer in the NHL (a feat that Kreider has never accomplished) and he was traded for a 2nd, 3rd, 6th and poo.

These Kreider trade return expectations are outrageous

:sarcasm:
There’s a back story about Skinner and Carolina. I can’t share everything I know but the return was heavily mitigated by circumstances.

Is Jimmy Murphy going full eklund or does he actually have some sources? Reporting heightened interest in Shatty over the past 24hours. And now tweeting that Brayden Schenn Boston is in the works.

Is Hayes hurt-hurt or is it that the team doesn’t want him playing through injuries he’d play through in a normal situation? Like with McDonagh last year.

Trade Zucc for a late 1st +, keep Hayes.

I'd be open to trading Hayes for a legit Dman. But knowing us we'll trade him to Tampa for the 31st OA in 2027 so just keep him

Wouldn't be surprised if we see a Hayes+Zuccarello package deal similar to McDonagh+JT. I don't think Zuccarello is getting a first rounder on his own.
