I’m baffled by the Rantanen situation. His agent is garbage.

Only a team who acquires him before July 1 can offer him an 8th year. Dallas reportedly was willing to go to 12+ and were told it’s “far off”. If you go to UFA, one, I doubt you’ll actually get 14M but even if you did 14x7 is 98M. Cool. 12x8 is 96M and no state tax. More than making up the difference of 2M. Are you really thinking you’ll make another 15M on your next contract when those 7 years are up? You may not even get a next contract. There’s no guarantees in hockey that you’re still playing in 7+ years. Meanwhile Dallas has Heiskanen, Hintz, Lindell, and was loved by Haakanpa when he was here (we became buds). What’s his logic through all this? Unless he knows he’s signing in Colorado but then that’s a massive red flag that the league should investigate.

Trade deadline. You need to be on the team by the trade deadline, or if acquired after, you can only get 7 years (ex. Guentzel could only get 7 years from Tampa, despite being traded Jun 30)

Should start getting the first trades soon. Usually the GMs are busy eating a big brunch on the deadline day and the trades start rolling in just before lunch.
i think we're done. no more moves for roster players. just ahl depth and late round picks.

i don't mean rangers i think the whole league got their business done

Rantanen is going to overplay his hand. He isn't a 12+ player. If he doesn't take this deal he what? Stays in Carolina that now doesn't want him and he doesnt want them? And he thinks he will play well? Again, he is a product of the second best center in the game right now and then got supplemented when the best offensive defenseman in the league joined them. 8 to 10 million per max should be his value.

He wants 14m per season, which is the problem. Hence why I’ve been saying why would we trade for him when he’s another over priced winger.

OT... but someone left the debug mode on... I'm sure this isn't helping performance:

The sql queries are available if you click the timing link... Probably not the most secure decision to have those available either.

But he can only get 7 years if he doesn’t extend with the team that holds his rights after today. He can get 8 from a team that gets him today. 8x12.5 is 100M. 7x14M is 98M. And contracts can be front loaded. He can get more money up front from bonuses. So… is he just bad at math and has a terrible agent?

We gonna make this a live thread, or did that functionality die when the site blew up in January?

I'm shocked the Sens aren't going for Peterka given the German connection with Stutzle

Byt after the 7 years are over his next contract will likely be more than $2m for the first year, so more over 8. Banking on not getting a career ending injury.

Right, his agent is an idiot lol. But sesriously, it’s been reported that he wants 14m per year. He sees the cap going up and wants what he wants, I don’t see that changing until the offseason when all teams can tell him he is or isn’t worth that contract.

That’s not a gamble I’d make as pro athlete. I’m going to be healthy enough, productive enough and motivated enough at 35? I’ll take the security now. Especially when, odds are, unless he wants to sign in Buffalo, Ottawa or San Jose he’s not actually going to get the 14M he wants. I’ll laugh if he ends up signing 12x7 somewhere, effectively leaving 16M from Dallas (plus no state tax) on the table where he could have played with half of team Finland.

Athletes think they’ll still be playing. And with the cap maybe confident he can get 14. Not like he’s not set for life anyway at $95+m anyway
