To be fair, he just dealt Miller
Miller was a huge problem in the locker room if the stories are to be believed. The Rangers did not want to pay his next contract. The Rangers have players in the system to replace Miller.

I don't think that Lindgren, Rykov, or Hajek are close to replacing Skjei. Two different scenarios. The Rangers should pay Skjei. 5 years for 25 million. Give him the Zibanejad contract. Sit both of them down and let them know that they're leading the next generation of Rangers.

Players like Skjei and Zibanejad could always be dealt if they flounder or stagnate. Centers and defensemen will always fetch a premium in a trade.

Not at all disagreeing, just saying he has technically already traded a young veteran. I think Gorton is looking for deals that he feels he will 'win'. Whether they puts a player like Stepan, McDonagh, Miller, Skjei or whoever available doesn't seem to matter.

Would you trade Skjei for the 10th if Boqvist was there? (assuming we picked a forward at 9)

If Hughes fell by some chance would you do it?

Hajek is probably the guy they have right now who is closest to Skjei in terms of upside

Rykov and Lindgren not so much

I'm curious, why doesn't Lingren have a similar top-4 upside? He came out of school after his sophomore year, a year earlier than Skjei. He has looked good in the NCAA and the WJC. He could play in the AHL for the entirety of the next 2 years and be right in line with when Skjei broke into the NHL. He's slightly shorter (~2-3") but he stockier than Skjei.

I actually think Lindgren, if he keeps progressing, could be a nice #4

I wouldn't move Brady Skjei for the 10th pick.

This is what always happens at draft time...value of picks seems to magically rise. The opposite happens at the TDL which JG capitalized on. If anything I would be looking to make the opposite trade now...flip 26/28 for a really good prospect or young NHLer.

If the deal was more like what I posted in the other thread:

EDM 1st + EDM 2nd + high end prospect (Yamamoto) for Skjei + NYR 3rd

And one from each of these groups was there @ #9:

Tkachuk
Zadina
Wahlstrom
Farabee (I trust Gorton and his staff if they love him)
Kravtsov (see Farabee)

Hughes
Dobson
Boqvist (see Farabee)

So they could take a high end forward and high end defenseman

I think he gets hit for his lack of offense generation in college. If he can show he can contribute more offensively, I think he could shoot his way up the depth chart.

I think he is probably a nice third pairing guy who can play on the second when it's all said and done

Zuccarello I'm not surprised by.

Just because teams are calling on Skjei does not mean he will be dealt. If he goes though...damn. Who is going to play defense this year?

Teams are calling on Zibanejad too, does not mean he will be dealt either.

Still, it makes me nervous to hear these names making the rounds on the rumor mill. Gorton would really be blowing it up by trading a young vet like Skjei or Zib.

Last year everyone wanted him to blow it up. Are we getting cold feet now?

Brady Skjei is a serviceable 2nd pair defenseman at this point. He's not a top pair defender. He's also 24; chances are, whatever he's gonna be, he better be it this year.

Listen, I like Brady Skjei, but we probably have his equivalent in spades already, in terms of caliber of player if not in style, in Lindgren, Rykov, and Hajek.

If someone wants to give me a 30 goal scorer prospect, i.e., if a guy like Walhstrom is still available at 10 after we've picked, I'm gonna consider that. I don't care who plays defense for us next year. We are rebuilding. Being competitive next year isn't on my radar.

Skjei can certainly anchor a top pairing d. He showed that at high level in the playoffs. Worst he could settle on is a top second pairing guy (at worst!!!). He just turned 24 he is the kind of guy you build with. The kind of guy you want on this team in 4 or 5 years. Unless we are getting a sure thing back. I am ok with sucking next year and we probably will anyway with or without skjei but when the year after this team needs to start trending back up.

Not to be forgotten but if Edmonton adds pretty much anyone, they will need to shed cap, right?

They have ~$12m in total cap space with 10 forwards, 5 defensemen and 3 goalies.

RFA's are:
Nurse
Pakarinen
Slepyshev
Strome

That would give them 13 forwards and 6 defensemen. What do those guys make of that cap space? Then you add someone like Faulk, Skei, Barrie, Hamilton. I don't think it fits

Yeah, the problem is that everyone fixates on the upside projection while ignoring the possibility of that player developing lower than his upside or busting altogether.

Given our recent history of lacking elite players, I can understand why we tend to fixate on draft upside, yet many ignore the downside risk.

Regarding the last part of your statement: that's what we've been hearing for the past month or so.

I don’t think almost anyone wanted them to blow it up to the extent they’d be moving the good young players they already have. Most people by far wanted to “blow it up” by moving McD, Nash, Grabner etc, which they did.
