I'm curious, why doesn't Lingren have a similar top-4 upside? He came out of school after his sophomore year, a year earlier than Skjei. He has looked good in the NCAA and the WJC. He could play in the AHL for the entirety of the next 2 years and be right in line with when Skjei broke into the NHL. He's slightly shorter (~2-3") but he stockier than Skjei.

I actually think Lindgren, if he keeps progressing, could be a nice #4

doesn't remotely have the puck skills or skating

different player

Skjei's brain is behind his speed which is why he does simple plays more than he should. If that catches up you have a top pairing guy.

Let me repeat what a scout told me after Lindgren was acquired...”He’s Michael Sauer”.

Not at all disagreeing, just saying he has technically already traded a young veteran. I think Gorton is looking for deals that he feels he will 'win'. Whether they puts a player like Stepan, McDonagh, Miller, Skjei or whoever available doesn't seem to matter.
Then Gorton will like it here. The Boards having the Rangers winning just about every trade proposal.

My biggest fear just sitting at #9 is that the Islanders will use some of their draft capital and trade in front of us. They could screw up whatever plans we have.

honestly i dont see a problem with it, even if the isles jump ahead of us....as a matter of fact i wish they did because that would make 11 and 12 available to us to acquire :)

Would people have a different POV about a potential Karlsson trade if he agreed to a contract extension as part of the deal?
100%.

I wouldn't want to trade assets only for him to turn around and sign elsewhere. I'd give up assets to get him to a contract on NYR's terms.

No more than 5 to 6 years.

Trading Skjei would be stupid and blindly expecting Hajek, Rykov, and Lindgren to replace him just because of their ceilings is silly. He’s pretty close to irreplacable in our system at the moment. I say that as a huge fan of Hajek.

Depends on how much. We talking 7x$12M?

No. That contract is going to end up being a problem for whichever team gives it to him. I want no part of that.

I don't want to be a debbie downer. It moves the needle, but that'll be a huge cap hit for the downward slope of his career. The slope could be steep or it could be gradual. But it weighs on my decision.

An extension makes the price more palatable but I can't say yes without knowing the trade.

Let me answer my own question...yes I would. Definitely. Karlsson is elite talent. This will be his age 28 season. We would be paying for ages 29-35/36. His skill set should age very well. I’d gladly move 3/4 assets and take back salary to make this deal. In fact, I’d carry Hayes, Namestnikov and whomever on my back to Ottawa to make this deal. Big, Big if about an extension but he makes this team much better the day he shows up and it goes from there. It goes from a rebuild to a reload.

Really seems like the Isles are caring less about draft picks and more about trying to win now. It’s more likely they trade one of those picks for a now player.

For me trading for EK extension or not is counterproductive to a rebuild. So for me it’s a no. If he makes it to free agency signing him for nothing is an entirely different story.
This.

I'm only taking him for pennies on the dollar, which means likely with Ryan (money retained) and without a contract. (I'm also potentially then flipping him at the TDL.) Next year, after (hopefully) a season of development from our kids, when he can be had for only money, is a completely different situation.

Just like we can trade Hayes because we have Andersson, Chytil, and Howden!
