Tavares is going to get double the salary and term that shattenkirk got.

He isn't worth that.

Overpaying Tavares is much much better than letting Tavares walk or trading his rights

And he's still just 27 so for at least 3-4 years, he'll still be in his prime and as productive as he is now.

Lucic at 50% retained + Namtesnikov for the 10th. That'll free up cap space for them to sign a defenseman.

Or we can send them Staal, but I doubt he waives
Or we can send them Smith but I'm not sure he is a "quality defenseman"

Smith cleared waivers, and Staal would too. They both have negative value.

Forget Hamilton, I wonder if we could swing Brodie, then flip him to Edmonton. Hayes for Brodie, then Brodie for the 10th. Maybe we swap Smith for Brouwer so Calgary has a LHD replacement.

Makes you wonder if we could've gotten more from the Oilers for McDonagh had we waited.

Rangers focusing on younger assets + the vets they already have.
Unless they sign zucc to an extension before the season there is no way they are naming him captain just to be in position to trade three consecutive team captains away at deadlines of their walk year.

We have no idea what this roster will look like in 3 weeks. Let's just wait for the 4th of July before we start playing these games

It depends - I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the Oilers are looking for RHD - that said, if you take handedness out of it, I don't think McD for 10 is outrageous, and we could have probably gotten a pick in the teens for Miller, but that ship has sailed.

I don't think Edmonton is going to want a player who does not have term left on his deal.

I think they want a PPQB RHD type, Shattenkirk would be the perfect fit if he did not have a clause and if the Rangers would consider moving him.

Where does Shattenkirk fit into this version of the Rangers timeline? Eventually they are going to likely move him before his contract is up anyway.

I don't think shatty for 10 is a good trade for us.

Shatty is a top 20 defenseman in the nhl...that's very poor value.
