One thing I haven’t seen mentioned here while discussing retaining salary and it might have changed with the new CBA. But as I remember, you can only retain for 3 yrs max, so even if Edmonton retained on lucic, years 4 and 5 the rangers would be on for the full hook.
Pretty confident that you retain salary for the full length of the deal. However, you can only be retaining on up to 3 contracts per year.

I just went through the CBA again to look for this and saw nothing of the sort. If you could cite this then that would be great.

But I have read in articles that it is three years as well.

from cap friendly

What is a retained salary transaction/trade

When a team trades a player, they have the option to retain a part of their salary (and cap hit). The team who retains the salary then pays the retained percentage of the salary, and also retains the percentage of the cap hit until the contract expires. The following requirements must be met to retain salary:
  1. The percentage retained cannot exceed 50 percent of the player’s salary (including all bonuses) and Salary Cap Hit.
  2. The same percentage must be retained for both the player’s salary and Salary Cap Hit, and cannot be modified.
  3. All teams are limited to a maximum of 3 retained salary contracts per season.
  4. Teams cannot retain an aggregate amount of more than 15 percent of the Salary Cap Upper Limit.
  5. Players’ contracts are limited to 2 retained salary transactions per contract.
Once a retained salary transcation has occured, there are various limitations, such as:
  • A team cannot reacquire a player whom they have retained salary from for a minimum of one year after the date of the transaction, or unless the player's contract expires or is terminated prior to the one-year date.
  • All teams involved in a retained salary transaction will have cap implications if the contract is bought out or terminated.
  • Teams who retain salary on a players contract, will have the full value of the cap hit act against the teams salary cap total, regardless of whether the player is reassigned to the minors by their current team.

From the trade section;

per Michael Russo who says multiple sources have told him the Flyers are gearing up to trade Simmonds. Year away from free agency. He has a 12 team no trade clause per capfriendly.

Too old? Broken down?

Calgary is going after Hayes, according to SNY.

And The Athletic says teams are calling the Rangers about Zibanejad. Huh? I thought the Rangers don't have much of a center depth.

Gorton has let the league know "we're open for business"

Excuse me, you are not RangerBoy.

He will report this to us in the morning, and we'll know the reasons why these things will or won't happen in that report.

Everyone is available at the right price. No exceptions.

I would think that they tried to flip Spooner at the deadline no? I’d sign him just 1 year if no interest now

I’d keep Namestnikov but sounds like I’m going to be surprised with moves

Both Chytil and Andersson's contracts can slide. Every prospect with a green icon is waiver exempt. Bigras and Tambellini seem to be the only noteworthy players losing waiver exemption status.

Thought the projections from about 2 weeks ago was 80-82. Might be remembering incorrectly.

$78M-$82M were the projections. The players hate escrow. The Canadian dollar is slumping again. Escrow wasn't bad this season. You never know about this coming season. Trump's tariffs on Canada.

You mean...you are allowed to trade players that your fanbase is emotionally attached to? The heart and soul of a team?

Nah...can't be. ;)

Closing in on 30, last year of his contract. Team is probably looking to get younger and maximize value for him while they can. Really no different than what we should be doing moving Zucc.

Maybe I should have put this here.

First off, the zucc stuff is weird. I think RB might be on to something with it being Zucc’s brother (and then it wouldn’t be so weird, then it would be funny, and kinda cool)

But regarding the rangers. Look, if the other team is willing to move the guy, the rangers have the pieces to get that guy, if they want to draft a guy, they have the pieces to get that guys.

I think this is a unique opportunity, I think the needs of other teams are such that the rangers and the other teams can each win the trades, and I think the rangers should be really aggressive in getting those players and picks to take such players. Pay the premium when the juice is worth the squeeze. Don’t worry about public opinion

I didn't start that topic. You never know about those accounts. This Webster guy knows everything about Zuccarello. The Colangelo story. They discovered a twitter account which praises every move made by Dorion. Bashes the players traded by Dorion such as Zibanejad and Turris. Bashes the critics. They took a shot at Corey Pronman for not knowing anything. It hasn't received much attention because of Ottawa's other issues. Who runs that account? The guy said he is not associated with Ottawa. If you read his tweets, he knows more than the normal fan and he hasn't tweeted(besides saying he is a normal fan) since being discovered. He spends too much time defending the moves made by Ottawa's management. He has a vested interest.

Just going by the numbers, if Ottawa lets Colorado pick 4th this year, it would be horrendously stupid.

Assuming the Senators finish 31OA, their best chance at getting a better pick is still less than 50%.

I disagree, it's the smart move… While it's just under 50% to get a better pick the value difference between #1-4 is much bigger then it is between #4-7. They will be a horrible team, being a horrible team without a 1st rounder is worse… Having a shot at starting a rebuild with a franchise C is also something to consider, Jack Hughes is a franchise C.

IMO it's a fireable offence to keep #4 this year, it would be a terrible move.

Fireable for the owner? It's very possible the owner is mandating they keep it as their fans may not show up (literally) all season if they view this season as a tank-a-thon. Based on what I know of Melnyk, I bet they keep it

The fans know. Worse, the fans look at it as a money issue. Bring in the front loaded contracts with a bigger cap hit than salary. Shed the good players making bucks. It's not about fielding a good team, it's about reaching the cap floor in the most creative way possible.

The fans know it but just want enough assets to survive for the next ownership group. If Karlsson is gone, which is likely, and they don't have a 1st next year, that is the worst case scenario. At least a shot at Hughes can bring some hope. It's not like drafting 4th on Friday will make them better for this year. They are destined for bottom 3 whether they actually try or not.
