Calgary is going after Hayes, according to SNY.

And The Athletic says teams are calling the Rangers about Zibanejad. Huh? I thought the Rangers don't have much of a center depth.

Gorton has let the league know "we're open for business"

I think they're listening but they aren't going to be making trades just for the sake of trades. If they trade Hayes or Zibanejad it's going to be for a "big" return one way or another.

e: barring a trade into the top 5 I don't think either guy is moved for anything less than young, talented, and near NHL ready players

Elite level talent is not something you can simply ignore.

Rangers won't be getting elite talent in this draft, and maybe not next year's draft either. And they don't have any in the system or on the roster.

They can groom all the prospects they want, but chances are none of them will be game changers like Panarin is.

Nor advocating a trade here, just food for thought. A Panarin trade is 100% worth discussing.
Fair point, but where the Rangers are, to me it makes more sense to take the risk and wait to see if he reaches FA.

I really hope they don't trade Zibby, will be left with the kids in the middle. No...won't happen.

Question. Is Ottawa allowed to trade their 4th overall in a package (say multiple picks) and take one of those picks and surrender that to Colorado?

No. It must be their own 2018 pick or their own 2019 pick.

Which is why It's tough, because it's either giving up 4OA this year, or potentially 1OA next year.

Not to my knowledge. And they have up until the minute they have the pick to notify Colorado.
saw it somewhere, forget where tbh

honestly tho, the chance of them giving colorado the 4 is zero anyway so it doesnt really matter.

if they did that, they’d basically be saying “yeah we’re punting next season even though the fans are an inch away from rioting and burning down whatever the sens stadium is called”

So essentially.....

Smith for Lucic approx 1.75mil plus an extra 2 years
Spooner for Pulijaarvi......not that much difference

So all we're getting is a 2nd for taking Lucic horrific contract?
Rather take my chances on Smith returning to form and possibly couping something good for him, if that happens.
Lucic is what he is.....but those extra 5 ball and chain years. Ugh
[/QUOTE]

How about Smith, Staal, and the 26th? For Lucic and the tenth?

Ottawa has not decided yet. And the more I think about it the more they should give the pick to Col this year. Are they going to be any better next year?

No. It must be their own 2018 pick or their own 2019 pick.

They could trade something and get that pick back. Someone reported they were trying to trade with Colorado to remove the protected pick but Colorado isn't cutting them a bargain.

I'm kind of surprised there aren't any Avs/Karlsson rumors. Imagine if they put together a package based on Ottawa's own 1st.
Edit: the Duchene trade will go down as the re-living of the lindros trade. Colorado will build another cup winner on the back of huge deal.

It could be worse.

At least Lindros was legitimately awesome.

Duchene can walk too. Ottawa will trade him no doubt, but his value will be low. I'm being a sadist but I want Duchene to come out and say he will refuse to re-sign with the team that trades for him, just tank the value.

Kind of a funny dichotomy with trades for pending UFAs. Their ego is boosted by the return, but the new team is hurt by the trade. Players should want to be acquired for the lowest value possible.
