He's 22. Theres still time to realize it, but yeah. Wasn't his dad a bodybuilder and his grandfather like a professional wrestler or like a Mr. Universe? You'd think he'd know it by now. I mean Lafreniere is pretty much the opposite of the "soft French-Canadian," but Gauthier epitomizes it despite being bigger and stronger.
I wouldn’t say he’s soft, but he is reminiscent of some of our previous “gentle giants”.
I know every team has their fair share...but I have such memories of Henrik getting runover about 10 times/ game and the Rangers hardly ever sticking up for him. Kings of the harsh words but never any real payback.

No. Sorry I wasn't clear. I want Koivu or someone like that to be the 3rd/4th line center. Put Chytil in the middle of Panarin and Kakko. I just don't think Strome is going to be worth whatever it takes to resign. My guess is over $5 which is too much imo. This is also presuming that Koivu or another vet would take a sub $2 offer or in that neighborhood.

Sorry for the confusion
I think $5m for a year or two would be affordable. Just can’t go “long term” with him, in my humble opinion.

Defensive play, face-offs, penalty killing, skating. He needs to get stronger to be able to physically win puck battles and be more assertive with the puck. The coaches I talked to when he was in junior said that he was very coachable so that's a positive too.
His FO% was 48% just like last season. Production the same (even though his Sh% this season was double last season). His ice-time went down by nearly a full 2:00. He took twice as many minor penalties as he did last season. His penalty killing was actually pretty good last season, but not this season (although to be fair no one was good on the PK this season). Last season he had a 15 even-strength assists—which is actually pretty f***ing good—but again, only 7 this season.

Not trying to be a dick by busting out the ol' Excel sheet, but to be honest, he probably regressed this season:

The bottom line in particular has been a horror show all season no matter who they try and all of Greg McKegg, Julien Gauthier and Brett Howden have been caved in regularly. The minus-1.2 wins are the worst of any line in the league outside of the state of Michigan.

Can anyone list up the best expansion draft-exempt centers out there? Even if they’re still prospects. I know they’d be costly but I think the Rangers can afford to pay a premium. And maybe there’s even a diamond-in-the-rough out there. Any ideas?

cap friendly has an expansion draft page...it has a list for every team of eligible/exempt players and which players have qualified to meet the exposure requirements.

I'd be very surprised if Lias was Ranger property after the draft.

why would they trade him? his value couldn't be lower. even if he will never play in ny again, makes no sense to not wait and hope he has a good year in sweden and recovers some of his value

My idea: sign Joe Thornton

He's old, but he still has skill left and plays a decent amount of minutes. Let him center Lafreniere's line and mentor Lafreniere. The Sharks were also terrible last season so he may have some room for improvement on a new team.
Interesting idea and probably the right line of thinking. Thornton, though, I don’t like. He’s very skilled but kind of a prima donna and a bit dirty too.

I also find it funny how the echo chamber loves Chytil but hates Howden. One is the golden child, can do no wrong... has no weaknesses we're allowed to speak of.. and the other is ECHL trash. No objectivity.

People defend Chytil with stats... and his age. Howden has similar stats while playing with worse linemates, taking on a lot more responsibility and not being as physically matured.

HF Boards gonna HF

Well Dom L from the Athletic has advanced stats that say Chytil was significantly better.

Simon was nothing more than a4th line thug.
Wilson.. While most hate him, is the new age enforcer and he's very effective at it.
He also has a lot more skill then given credit for.
He's a gamer when it's most important and personally, I'd kill to have him on this team.
Great player..
True on Wilson. Though I hate to say it.
Simon, though, was a decent player. He was just so wild and crazy and scary that it overshadowed his skill. Though he was very much a player for his era. I don’t think he’d be particularly effective, scoring-wise, these days.

One other bit of optimism. I think the Canes are the better team in their series with the Bruins. Which, while it might be bad for our other 1st round draft pick, it does make me feel better how badly we were dismantled. Canes combo of size and speed is absolutely smothering. And if they get the lead it's really hard to come back on them.
f*** that. Montreal is giving it to Philadelphia , Chicago is playing tough against Vegas, even Arizona was hanging with Colorado today. There’s no excusing how we played against Carolina. None whatsoever.

Howden is a legitimately strong skater. Of course everyone want to see more all over. But it takes time to develop. A lot of areas that can improve. Just have the game slow down a little for you, more time to process things. Find out what works and what don’t.

Chytil has his own issues. He is good in the situations were the puck is moved up ice N-S along the boards and a winger can get it to him at center ice after he has built up speed. What he really can improve a ton at is supporting his wingers more and getting them the puck. Also his game down low. But he is also so young, can definitely improve a lot. But it does feel like he has stopped developing a bit in those high octane offensive areas. His game is a lot about driving the puck N-S, and plays in which he open up things for his teammates have been few and far between. Right now I see him as a center that is a good option for those bigger PF wingers, like Gauthier. But wingers like Kakko and Laf are the completely opposite. They thrive with the center that can draw attention and then get the puck to then.

But at the same time, just look at Zib. Chytil is the age Zib was THREE years before coming to NY. Time is certainly Chytils side. No doubt.
I wonder if Chytil sticks as a center. I kind of think he ends up a winger.

Phew! For a moment there, I thought I hit a nerve.

Game has changed yet should the Rangers find somebody who can police Laf and company?
I would prefer it to be a team effort. But as we know, in practice that doesn’t really happen. In that case I’d like to have at least a couple guys who set a tone. Like Lemieux. Probably one or two more guys who can play chippy and defuse guys like Wilson. It doesn’t have to be a goon. Just need to have some...willingness to play that way when necessary.

Bruins have looked like ass since they arrived in the bubble.
I think the Canes make teams look bad. They play great defense and while they’re not very impressive offensively, they’re good enough and opportunistic. I cringe when people say the Rangers ‘didn’t come to play’ or ‘weren’t prepared’. Sometimes the other team plays better.

I dont think Gauthier is necessarily a gentle player. I think he hasn't adjusted to the style of play required of him to stay in the NHL just yet. I feel like he tries to make hits and he does use his body to seperate D from the puck and he does also use his body effectively to shield and keep possession. Where he fails is in making effective body contact on the forecheck. He's still bouncing off or just missing his targets. And I'm not sure this will make sense, but sometimes when he hits D, the puck bounces too far away. Like he makes the hit but doesnt' find a way to stop the puck from leaving the area. It gets punched away by the D. I am pretty sure this will improve with time. He certainly has the strength and we've seen him use his speed and size as a plus on the rush. His play just has to evolve in those grittier parts of the rink.

Anyone know what happened to RangerBoy? According to his profile he hasn't logged in since late March of this year... With the recent Rangers news I was anticipating some informational posts from him but now I see he hasn't been around for 4+ months...
Some of us have mentioned this over the past month or two. It’s concerning to say the least. Hoping @RangerBoy is just on sabbatical or something.

No its not just the Canes, their seeding games were bad too, Pastranak and Marchand both been in and out of the lineup.

You can't compare stat sheets when the variables change from year to year. His ice time went down because we signed a guy named Panarin who takes a lot of ice time, anyone not in the top 6 felt that. His actual stats likely suffered due to that too. With his faceoffs, im not sure if you noticed but he was taking important draws even over Zibanajad at times so while his percentage went down his faceoff opponents were likely better than the previous year. Stats are a nice tool but they do not tell a whole story. I thought he was one of the few bright spots in the post season. The coach,Gm and president all like where his game is headed and for now i have to agree.
