Hopefully SJ gets it done thereby removing any NYR temptation from looking at EK.

I would not be too against taking the risk on Karlsson, a healthy Karlsson is the best defenceman in the league by far and could be an important piece in winning us a Cup.

Just to pitch another scenario, that I don’t believe but that probably make sense in the EA version of reality:

1. Trade Zibanejad

2. Sign Duchene

From my POV:
Why? Zibanejad would bring a really good return. Duchene is a good fit to center Kakko.

Why not? Room politics. It’s a real cynical move...

Its interesting, but I think at the end of the day I want to have my roster constructed with good cap distribution. Zibanejad at his hit is amazing for a 1st line center. I actually like Duchene but his hit will be close to $9-10m.

The assets for Zibanejad would be very nice. It's just so hard to walk away from a bargain. Hayes might get more in salary than Zib from the flyers, and he may play 3rd line. No higher than 2nd.

Duchene isn’t going to come here

Google translate.

In 9 days, all teams in the NHL can talk to Mats Zuccarello about contract. Then the "interview period" begins for free agents. He will receive many inquiries. Dallas Stars is the only team that can offer him a contract today. Still believe Dallas is the most likely outcome.

Why would anyone want Duchene on the Rangers? $9.5M for the next 7 years.

Columbus is interested in keeping Duchene but they don’t want to pay him $9.5M or more.

Columbus offered Panarin and Bobrovsky 8 years and $72M. The offer has been there since last summer.

Aaron Portzline wrote about this a few days ago. One NHL executive told The Athletic that he expects Duchene to get more than Skinner.

Is San Jose really giving Karlsson $88M? Really?

It was reported Karlsson and Doug Wilson had dinner together on Wednesday.

Someone took a picture of Doug Wilson and Karlsson posing with the waiter outside the restaurant.

Tampa Bay is on his list. Elliotte Friedman said SJ was confident at the scouting combine that they are going to sign Karlsson. Karlsson likes TB but what happens if they can't work out the numbers in TB.

San Jose is nice.

Now those are pants I’d put up in a losing bet

Isn't Niskanen a good defenseman? Why would the Caps do this? Just cap space?

We were kicking it around in the draft thread, but the Rangers could definitely help Vegas out with their cap situation. They'd also walk away with a valuable piece in Miller who could be shopped to a team in need of a RHD but needs to offset salary in the deal.

Clarkson, Miller, #17 for Pionk and #20. They gain cap flexibility and get a guy who still has some upside in his development and fills a similar role to what they're giving up in Miller. Rangers then have a more valuable RHD in Miller to shop in a trade. Doubt Miller would remain in NY unless one of Shattenkirk or ADA was moved.

They don't solve all of their cap issues with the trade, but Vegas gets much needed flexibility without losing too much impact to the NHL roster.

This move makes too much sense. Miller could then be used to move elsewhere, there were rumors both Toronto and Winnipeg may have been interested before.

Great idea to trade the one great emerging player story the Rangers had last season. MAYBE this is a discussion point if the Rangers didn't get the #2 pick, but the compete window definitely got moved up a bit with that stroke of luck, and Zibanejad is part of that solution.

The Rangers need to address the blue line. In fact, it should be the primary focus from now until opening night. The stars are aligning elsewhere, but the defense remains a toxic dump.

I think there will be more clarity by the end of this upcoming season. Rykov, Hajek and Lindgren should take steps forward and we should see them for portions of the season. Next off-season guys like Shattenkirk, Smith and Staal all only have a year left and are more easily moveable.

Unfortunately, I think we will be seeing a similar toxic dump for 1 more year

Washington may view Gudas as a replacement for Orpik for a few years. He was overpaid but a solid veteran physical presence on their back end since he signed from PIT.

Im scared for Caps games now, we have like 5 players under 21 who definitely do not need to start their careers with concussions.
Sad but true. On the other hand, Gudas is just as likely to injure someone on this own team as he is to injure an opponent.

Here’s how it works...you make a deal in concept with the other GM and before you complete the trade, you ask permission to speak to the agent. The Rangers know Overholt...he’s a tough negotiator. He’s also talked to the player and knows where is is willing to play and what kind of dough he is looking for. You can either strike a deal right there, set the parameters for a deal or see that things are not going to work out. Then you close the deal or walk away. The Rangers are in a unique position because the top destinations for players (and New York is a top destination) usually are tighter on $. Neither Gorton or I are interested in trading for a player who is not going to sign.
I understand how it works. Overholt & Trouba will look to get a deal that they believe will equal what he gets in the UFA market. That is going to be very expensive by itself, not to even mention the price that it would be to land him.

No thanks. I would make them blink and not have any issue of waiting him out on UFA. Which, btw, is utterly debatable if his contract would even be worth it for what you are asking from him. Not even to mention the injury history that comes along with him.
