Hayes could fit in very well with the Flyers. Big body--can hold on to the puck. Couturier and Voracek the same. I think Kevin is a similar player to Couturier--just a little less offensively gifted.

I guess Hayes didn't make much of an impression on Winnipeg. Whatever (think 7M gets it done) contract Philadelphia signs him to, they are going to seriously regret it at some point.

Not sure if Winnipeg has cap room for Hayes.

Elliotte Friedman was on the NHL Network yesterday. Taylor Hall wants to play on a winning team. He has been in the NHL since 2010-11 and he has played in the NHL playoffs once in 2017-18. Hall won the Hart Trophy that season. He likes New Jersey and everything but he is sick of missing the playoffs. It's up to Shero to show him the team is committed to winning and put a winning product on the ice. What does Shero do? Keep Hall and make moves to improve the team. What happens if those moves don't work and Hall doesn't want to sign? Trade him in February as a rental? Trade Hall this summer? How much are they going to get for one year of Hall?

Columbus was in the same situation with Panarin. Aaron Portzline was throwing out these crazy trade ideas for Panarin. Teams trading away top players for one year guaranteed of Panarin. Columbus couldn't replace him in their lineup with any player acquired in a trade. The Devils aren't as good as Columbus but it will be interesting to see what the Devils do with Hall. The Devils will get a late 1st round pick and a few other assets for one year of Hall. I read these crazy proposals on the main board for one year of Hall. Colorado is trading the 4th pick overall for one year of Hall. OK.

Shero is entering his 5th season as Devils GM. They are one of the middling teams. They want to be competitive and make the playoffs while at the same time add young players to the organization. It's hard to both things. The Devils find themselves in a situation where their best player can walk out the door for nothing. The Hall situation is similar to Tavares but Tavares had deeper roots to the Islanders. He got sick and tired of missing the playoffs on the Islanders and left. The guy gave 9 years of his life to the Islanders and decided to leave. Shero needs a find a better goaltender. Schneider wasn't that great to begin with and he isn't that good right now.

Elliotte talked about Karlsson. He discussed/wrote about Karlsson and TB. Karlsson would like to team up with Hedman in TB. He said someone called him after reading/hearing the Karlsson item and told him to not rule out San Jose. It seems the Sharks have a very good offer on the table. Elliotte said Karlsson wants to win.

Am I the only one who doesn't think Day is a garbage prospect?

I mean, he's obviously no stud. But he still has some potential to become an NHL player and from what other posters who follow HFD have said on here, he showed improvement after his rocky start last year.
3rd round picks generally not likely to develop into NHL players. We all just had higher expectations of Day because he was our first selection that year.

This place never seems to change. People love to jump on others for their opinions. It's a forum where people are allowed to voice their ideas, hopes and wishes for a team with which everyone shares a common interest. Yet we chastise people for their perspectives. The mob mentality here is saddening. Even by some reputable and information providing posters. So many posters here have been driven off over the years.

Everyone assumed Henrik would never want to leave New York. Then the article comes out and he's open to conversations with management on their future plans. Maybe he elects for a change, maybe he doesn't. But the certainty that people speak with about him not wanting to live in a place like Alberta is surprising. I don't think anyone here has a personal relationship with him. Yet everyone knows he wouldn't move to Calgary. He isn't getting any younger. With only two more years under contract how many ready made opportunities to compete will there be for him? Most teams with a chance to contend aren't a goalie away. If his goal is to win a cup then why not consider the opportunity, His children are still very young and could make the move for ~1.5 years if he were moved at the TDL without much disruption. Alberta is beautiful. People change their mindset and enjoy different opportunities in their lives. I just left Manhattan for a horse farm in Ontario. My family and friends would've laughed in your face if you told them I'd be living on a farm one day.

I'm addicted to the Rangers and enjoy reading these boards. Just wish people would criticize other opinions less. We're all on the same team.

I agree that it's not far fetched to think he'd play in Calgary for 2 years with a legit shot at a cup.

Wouldn't take much to get me to move him either.

I think it had more to do with him being granted exceptional status in the OHL. He hadn't lived up to that by the time he was drafted, thus the 3rd round selection, but the hope was that he could figure it out and take advantage of the tools he has (size and skating).

Which is another reason why the Devils will probably draft Hughes. “Hey Taylor, here’s your franchise center to feed you pucks.” It’s the pr side of it too, trying to convince Hall to stay.

Who do you think gets more in their contract? Hayes or Kreider? One is a center other is a winger. Each has their own attributes that make them valuable.

Points production is similar. Kreider with more goals.

Recon that his contract year will determine Kreider's value unless he signs early.

If Karlsson stays in SJ then they should be considered a possible landing spot for Henrik. He'll love the area and he's got his good buddy there.

Personally I think any team would be nuts to take on Henrik's last two years. One could make the case that he's become an average goalie and at $8.5 mil for each of the next two years that's a lot. In San Jose's case they have Jones I think for 5 more years at almost $6 mil per. If you keep him too you're committing $14 mil to your goaltending. Jones IMO is not worth that contract and won't be easy to move. The next question for them is who they have in the bank--because two years from now they'll want to turn that goalie job over to somebody. The Sharks are not deep in prospects and have a lot of aging players. They're future goalie prospects are an iffy bunch. I really don't see Karlsson as a good move and adding Henrik IMO won't be either.

I don't think Henrik gets traded anywhere without 50% retention anyway.

I think the spotlight was also a bit brighter because most third round picks don't have the natural gifts that Day has. Between that and the focus on him because he was formerly granted exceptional status in the OHL, there was some intrigue.

Day did make good progress in the OHL, but the challenge was always going to be the way he processed the game.

He doesn't, but then SJ is still spending 10 mil on goaltending, and it creates a weird situation there for Jones, who has the been the starter there for the last 4 years. He was good for the first 3. I think they would rather bet on him returning to form.

Calgary is a more likely destination, IMO, though I don't know that Hank would agree to go there.

Carolina might be his best bet. We could even take back Darling and stick him in Hartford.

Its so hard because he's not going to go to a place where he can't live the lifestyle he wants to. He would absolutely abhor Calgary and I don't know if I see him getting what he wants out of Raleigh-Durham either. I just can't see him going to a place that doesn't have a major metropolitan city as its center.

Good post. Two years from now and Mika could well be in the same situation. Fed up having missed the playoffs the last 4 years. Prime of his career wasted.

Every now and then I think topic discussion can’t get more pointless on here, but then someone suggests that Hank could get traded. So many hurdles with that before you even get out the barn door.

The new 31 Thoughts podcast is out this morning. 54 minutes in.

Elliotte Friedman said teams are telling him they are using $81M-$82M as a cap number for next season. Not $83M. That was the scuttlebutt at the scouting combine.

One of the NHL's solutions to escrow is lowering the cap.

Same story pretty much every year, the projections for the cap ceiling are always set with optimistic glasses on.

Can the NHL just lower the cap?

My guess, it's more revenue came in lesser than they were predicting in conjunction with them assuming the PA will set the escalator lower or not use it at all?

I really could see Hank liking living in Raleigh-Durham for a couple of years. It's not NY, but it's a pretty nice spot.
