HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread #91: 2025 Trade Deadline edition

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
If what Seravelli is saying is true, that we have something close to a late 1st on the table for Evans....you really can't pass that.

"Close to a late 1st" doesn't cut it for me.

Would it be good assets management? Totally.
Would it be a good message to send your players? No.
Would it reward hard work? Neither.

We already have what? 7 picks in the first 3 rounds of the upcoming draft?

At some point enough is enough. Go with the current group and improve the group this summer.

The assets accumulation phase should be over and done with.

I'm worried about him, as he's regressing

Bennett contract will be a massive overpaiment, and history shows us, he will be declining pretty fast. If Habs were a contending team, I'd be 100% on it. Now it's just not the time. You don't sign high prized UFAs at this point. You will end up with a 7-8 millions third line C on a sharp decline when you are contender.
Something is fishy there. Most of the young offensive guys there have poor season.

Max Truman said on BPM Sports that from what he hears, the way Evans is talking to his close friends and the way he's arranging things, he is expecting to be traded. Marinaro added that Evans knows he's being traded and that Evans is devastated (he's been saying it the last week or so).

Malkin is putrid defensively, is putrid at face off, is putrid at 5v5, is getting slower by the year, would be an absolute horrible 2nd line when you consider that Laine is putrid defensively, putrid at 5v5 and most of the time just don't care to skate at all. Not to mention cost of acquisition and missed opportunities, it's a no go. You most likely have 7-8 years ago Malkin in mind.
I’m not advocating for Malkin but he’d be 4th on the Habs in 5v5 points after the three guys on our top line and his most common linemates are Michael Bunting, Cody Glass and Anthony Beauvilier.

He’s obviously not what he once was, but he’s still a fine 2C that is forced to play with garbage wingers.

It will cost assets to acquire a 2C and a top4 dman.

Wouldn’t you think it’s preferable to cut the “asset accumulation phase” off AFTER this season?

I think every GM thinks there is a point where you go and trade the guy and if it isn't met, you keep him. Hughes, by knowing Evans asking for his next contract, knows if there is a possibility of reaching a deal. There is also a value attached to Evans contribution to the team's chance at making the playoffs.

Actually, I think Evans is not worth a 1st if we only look at what he brings. Though the actual market and the fact he only makes 1,7M$ makes him a very interesting target. For me, 1st is where a draw the line because is somewhat of an overpayment for him. Where Hughes draws the line?? who knows.

And if I'm Hughes, I'm looking at a cheap replacement for him like Gourde. His salary and recent injury makes him a cheap asset to get. And Gourde is a solid player. I don't think we downgrade much, if at all, if we go from Evans to Gourde.

Let's say we get a late 1st for Evans and we pay a 3rd and a 5th for Gourde, would you do it?

I make an exception for Bennett. I don't care what anyone says.

Frank S, reporting that the Habs already have an offer of “better than a 2nd round pick on the table” for Evans. It’s at the 27:50 mark.

Yeah. To be more precise he says : more than a LATE 2nd. So it could be a mid 2nd because some of the top teams have that asset like Tampa Bay, Washington and Edmonton, the last two being rumored to have shown interest in Evans.

But I would pissed if that's what we get for Evans to be honest.

Dylan Cozens is a good choice. He's 24, he's unhappy with the Sabres and he have 5 more years on his contract. He will not cost that much in a trade and he doesn't cost that much considering the crazy market and the next cap hit. He's better than Dach for those who might compare the 2 players.

That's what we said last summer, and we ended up keeping our assets.

The prospects we have in addition to the picks we have this summer is more than enough. And UFAs don't cost anything to acquire.

There needs to be a clear message to the current roster that we're not sabotaging them.

I'd be more open in such a scenario, yes.

Well they seem to be flabbergasted by the fact Evans might get a better return than Laughton. But they have the same offensive stats, Evans makes half the salary and Laughton still has another year of contract after this one. Also Evans is a beast on the PK. I like Laughton but I'm not very surprised Evans would get a better return.

Yeah he would be super cool and would help a lot. Yet, "I don't care" is the reason why we spent the last 30 years wondering why we don't have top end talent. Always overpaying for mid/bottom players past their primes. No way HuGo sign him. Let's hope instead that Florian develop into some sort of Bennet 2.0 (he's having a very promising and impactful rookie season so far).

Ask Florida or Team Canada if Bennett is a mid/bottom player.

He is exactly a middle of the lineup C. He's been a beast last playoff run, and also for team Canada. Yet id sign such UFA only when you are a contender, not a developing team (2dn youngest) with several core piece not even playing in the NHL yet. Bennett contract, 100%, will turn into an albatros sooner than later.

I'm not a size above all else but I agree with this. If you go and look at the last 10 Stanley Cup winners, none of them have 3 small players like we currently do (Gallagher, Hutson, Caufield). I think only one of them had 2. Small players have their place but this team needs bigger players. No more acquiring small players.
Last season, all Gallagher weight or lighter:
Lomberg, verhaeghe, Rodrigues, Cousins.
2 players in their top 6 were 200lbs+.

Tampa and Pitt had a bunch of lightweights too.

TB has been mention, but Pitt: Sheary, Wilson, Guentzel, Hornqvist, Hagelin, Kunitz … all 180’s or lighter.

Why trade Brett Kulak we can still make the playoffs with a 15-5 record! The players deserve to keep Brett Kulak for their efforts! Who cares about a low 2nd pick when you have Brett Kulak? Brett Kulak should stay.
