Works for me. :thumbu:

At the end of the day, I'm not that concerned about the actual pairings. I trust Quinn to figure them out. What I'm looking at is the asset allocation and the building of an eventual (like '20-'21 or '21-'22) solid D-corps.

This is especially true at this stage of the rebuilding. The lines and pairs will figure themselves out, as will linear trades (similar age and talent, but different roles that suit better each team). This is the asset accumulation stage. Get us enough tanks and planes, and eventually the Generals will figure out how to deploy them.

Last offseason we had a bit of a discussion about Zibanejad in the context of 1C position. I tried an approach of projecting his performance / production when he was healthy while you refused to call Zibanejad anything more than a 50-point center until proven otherwise. You're kind of being similarly conservative now with your assessment of Trouba. This is a position you're fully entitled too but IMHO it's OVERLY conservative in case of players in their mid-twenties.

I don’t remember that at all. I do recall consistently saying Zibanejad is capable of being a first line center with 6o or even 70 point, if he can stay healthy.

In fact a quick search with Zibanejad and my name reveals a history of talking about his talent level when others were unsure.

Also found that this post from March 23, 2018. I believe it’s on page 14 of the search results:

I'd love to see him have that 82 game stretch where he has linemates he clicks with, where he's healthy, and a coach/system that exploits his best attributes.

Obviously, I know it's unreasonable to expect this kind of play every game. But I truly believe Zibanejad has 30 goal/70 point potential
.”

But I’m intrigued and would be curious to see what you’re referencing.

8 million is ~10% of the cap at the moment. Players currently in the conference finals who signed a contract at a 10% cap hit or higher upon signing:

David Krejci (BOS)
Patrice Bergeron (BOS)
Vladimir Tarasenko (STL)
Alex Pietrangelo (STL)
Jordan Staal (CARL)
Brent Burns (SJS)
Erik Karlsson (SJS)
Logan Couture (SJS)*

Flawed logic to say we shouldn't sign UFAs based on this article.

* Contract kicks in on July 1st

Does anyone?

How can anyone remember who anyone else is when everyone keeps changing names all the time? I have a hard time remembering my grand-parents names, at this place there are like 100 of posters and some are changing names all the times.

Panarin and Bob are vacationing together in Miami before they go back to mother Russia.

What do all of those players have in common? None of them are group III free agent contracts. The Boston guys are Boston draft picks. The Blues guys are Blues draft picks. Staal signed that contract after being traded to Carolina. That's the 2nd contract signed by Burns in SJ. Karlsson signed his contract in Ottawa when he was 22. Couture was a Sharks draft pick and he has numerous extensions.

Pierre LeBrun wrote about this in The Athletic. Burns at $8M is the highest cap hit left in the playoffs. Burns is tied for the 21st highest cap hit.

The Rangers could have kept their guys and signed them but Gorton has traded them all away. That's hid philosophy.

Gorton traded them (Zuccarello, Hayes, McDonagh, Miller) away because none of them are on the level of the players listed above. McDonagh MAYBE. But that's even a question mark. McDonagh has had 1(!) great season in 2013-14 and everything else was a 2nd pair D-man in terms of his quality of hockey.

And how about the past X Stanley cup winners? Because Washington and Pittsburgh sure did have players over 8M when they won. This was a terrible article that LeBrun first posted on the Athletic over the weekend.

Not to mention many of those contracts are artificially low due to being signed under the previous CBA for more than 8 years.

I will try to find it though I never used this functionality on this site. I’m getting older but not old enough for my memory to betray me just yet.

The moral of the story is to pay your players on long term contracts as soon as you have identified them as part of your core. It will make a great difference if you try to build a contender for a decade.
TML are in cap hell now, if Marner get the same contract as Matthews it will be even worse in 5 years. Buch should get a long term contract now, Kravtsov, Chytil, Andersson, Howden and Kappo might get one after their ELC. When theyaare done with their ELC we should have the space to do it with no problems. It might be a bit tight the first 2 years if we want to dip into the UFA pool, but hopefully we will end up with a cap structure close to what the Bruins have today.

Its to soon for DeAngelo and Lemioux, we don't know yet for sure what we have in them.

That isn't the moral of the story. The moral is to do that IF they are worth it. Were Girardi, Staal, Hank and Step part of the core? Yes. Who was worth their contract of that group? Hank and that's it and there are many on here that would say not even him.

Burns can be the highest paid guy left... he's worth it. But had we given contracts to Dubi, Cally and McD... JUST because they were core members we'd more f***ed than we are right now.

So now we are using 1(!) post-season to make an argument. Great. Why don't we sign a 35-year old journeyman to be in net and get rid of Shestyorkin and Georgiev, since McElhinney got Carolina there so others can do as well.

When looking at the current teams in the conference finals, it clearly means we should trade away our 1st round picks for immediate help because Boston, San Jose and St Louis did that. It's clearly the key to success.

Or is that different?
