What does acquiring Fox now as opposed to signing him after next season do to our Seattle expansion draft protected list

I don't think it changes anything, he'll still be a 2nd year player for the expansion draft which makes him exempt.

I could totally be wrong though

Buckle up. Ready?
Here we go:

Kakko
Kravtsov
Zibanejad
Chytil
Shestyorkin
Miller
Fox
Buchnevich
Skjei
Lundkvist
Hajek
Georgiev
Howden
DeAngelo
Lias
Lindgren
WPG1

This is so stupid.

Lot of good pieces but still need guys to keep developing or take some steps forward. Want to see Chytil establish himself as a top six guy next year, Andersson solidfy a roster spot, Hajek get back into the lineup, Buch show that the end of last year wasn't a fluke, Howden show more consistency, DeAngelo stay in the lineup, and so on...

That's how it is with a lot of young players though, always question marks until they finally get it all down

2019 Opening Day D-Corps

Skjei Trouba
Hajek ADA
Rykov Fox

With Miller and Lundkvist in the wings. Lindgren and Keane in the AHL.

This is a great question.

Judging by his usage though, I think Quinn is on our side.

I don't know. Last season did not leave me with any great impression about who the Rangers really wanted to move forward with.

I honestly kind of think the choice will come down to whether or not their like of Pionk is overcome by how much better DeAngelo is at hockey.

For sure it didn't, but Quinn used DeAngelo more down the stretch than he did Pionk 5v5.

They do fall in love with bad players all the time, but there is no more AV to share that type of love with the FO.

Moving this post from @bobbop here from the Fox trade thread, since I think this is probably the more appropriate place to discuss:
I’ve been posting since January that Smith would be bought out this summer (in the likely event that he is not traded) That's not speculation on my part. I’ll leave it at that.
Interesting. Wasn't aware that you had this level of confidence on a buyout.

So, for shits & giggles, I just went to CapFriendly to check the buyouts on all our leading candidates (the "S Boys"). I guess I knew in the back of my head, but I hadn't really put it together: all three have 2 years left, and their contracts therefore line up. Hypothetically, if you bought them all out, over the period of '19-'20 to '22-'23 you'd be looking at cap penalties of:

Smith: $1.0MM –> $3.1MM –> $1.1MM –> $1.1MM
Staal: $2.9MM –> $3.7MM –> $1.2MM –> $1.2MM
Shatty: $1.5MM –> $6.1MM –> $1.4MM –> $1.4MM

Existing (Girardi + Spooner): $4.5MM –> $1.1MM –> $1.1MM –> $1.1MM

Possible total dead space: $9.9MM –> $14.0MM –> $4.8MM –> $4.8MM

Now, obviously those numbers are CRAZY in the short term, and particularly in year 2. But if you're looking at a roster (assuming a Kreider deal) where the three largest contracts going into next year, after Hank, are Skjei ($5.3MM), Namestnikov ($4.0MM), and Strome ($3.1MM), depending on what Buch, Lemieux, ADA, and Pionk receive (and presuming no one ELSE gets traded)...

Holy crap!

Obviously better to retain on/deal anyone you can, and I can totally see them keeping Staal as a mentor, but that's surprisingly feasible, presuming a big bump in the cap post the new TV deal in the US and given the stage of the rebuild.

It's like all the stars aligning for @silverfish! :)

Yet now with Fox also in the mix, DeAngelo a non arbitration RFA, Shattenkirk having questionable trade value and some trade protection, Pionk being the only PKer out of them all, where they all want to PP, I'll just say I'm really hoping they don't mess this up.

I feel like I heard Sam and Joe making excuses for Pionk and how he was getting less icetime near the end of the year (he wore down, etc etc) so it may also just be that the coaching staff felt he couldn't keep up the big minutes at that point.

That said, DeAngelo played well and coaches showed some confidence in him as long as he can stay in the lineup

I don’t see an issue w Smith as the spare D and emergency 4th line wing ... no buyouts

Staal buys time for kids
Claesson is waived if a kid beats him
Shatty deal next year at 50

If ADA and Fox are going to be two of the RHD moving forward, ideally you would want the third to be more of a matchup player. I think Pionk got a lot of PK duty because he was the best of a poor group of alternatives. I personally like Pionk but he is starting to feel more and more like the odd man out here.

Still don't get this when this team won't be competing this coming season at minimum. You can burn a year just staying status quo and can bury Smith in Hartford if you really need to. We don't need the cap space. Even if your answer is Panarin AND Karlsson that won't put us into contention.

What are they giving up to get Trouba?
An assortment of Pionk, Vesey, Names, Strome, mid-tier prospect, 1st round pick ( hopefully Dallas1 )

Giving up WPG1 would hurt.... but it can be mediated by trading Kreider and signing Panarin

Additions
Kakko
Kravtsov
Fox
Panarin
Zegras/Turcotte/Newhook/Caufield
Trouba
Shesty
Rykov

Subtractions
Kreider
Shattenkirk
Staal
Pionk
Names/Vesey

I'd call it a great off-season

The central argument behind those buyouts is that you’re just getting these players out of the way to allow the youth to grow. In some cases (Smith) the sooner the better. In others (Shattenkirk)... it’s looking like at some point he is going to beyond superfluous. You might even consider that point to be right now. If you have DeAngelo, Pionk and Fox potentially being able to fill the RD puck moving and PP roles, you really need to get someone who can kill penalties in there. Shattenkirk is just taking up roster space that can be better utilized elsewhere. And he can’t be assigned to Hartford.

I do think Staal will be here until the end, unless his game REALLY falls off a cliff.

There’s benefit to eliminating their presence.

How many RD do we need? With Fox added we can pretty much finally put the Trouba rumors to bed.

Considering two of the subtractions were Shattenkirk and Pionk...

Anyway, a right side that has no PKers on it isn’t the right side of a Cup contender. It’s going to have to be addressed at some point.
