Moving this post from
@bobbop here from the Fox trade thread, since I think this is probably the more appropriate place to discuss:
Interesting. Wasn't aware that you had this level of confidence on a buyout.
So, for ****s & giggles, I just went to CapFriendly to check the buyouts on all our leading candidates (the "S Boys"). I guess I knew in the back of my head, but I hadn't really put it together: all three have 2 years left, and their contracts therefore line up. Hypothetically, if you bought them all out, over the period of '19-'20 to '22-'23 you'd be looking at cap penalties of:
Smith: $1.0MM –> $3.1MM –> $1.1MM –> $1.1MM
Staal: $2.9MM –> $3.7MM –> $1.2MM –> $1.2MM
Shatty: $1.5MM –> $6.1MM –> $1.4MM –> $1.4MM
Existing (Girardi + Spooner): $4.5MM –> $1.1MM –> $1.1MM –> $1.1MM
Possible total dead space: $9.9MM –> $14.0MM –> $4.8MM –> $4.8MM
Now, obviously those numbers are CRAZY in the short term, and particularly in year 2. But if you're looking at a roster (assuming a Kreider deal) where the three largest contracts going into next year, after Hank, are Skjei ($5.3MM), Namestnikov ($4.0MM), and Strome ($3.1MM), depending on what Buch, Lemieux, ADA, and Pionk receive (and presuming no one ELSE gets traded)...
Holy crap!
Obviously better to retain on/deal anyone you can, and I can totally see them keeping Staal as a mentor, but that's surprisingly feasible, presuming a big bump in the cap post the new TV deal in the US and given the stage of the rebuild.
It's like all the stars aligning for
