Emily Kaplan reported in the first period the Rangers are looking to subtract players. She mentioned Kreider, Lindgren, Smith and Kakko. She claims Kreider is complicated because of the limited NTC and the cap hit is hard to be traded during the season.
Dallas has the Seguin money but Dallas doesn't want to trade any of their top kids namely Stankoven, Bourque and the Swiss D. I saw Jeff Marek's show yesterday and he said the Stars will be chasing every forward available like Kreider, Brock Nelson, etc. The Stars don't have much to trade on their roster. Dallas acquired Tanev last season for a 2nd round pick and another small asset.
Dallas-Vegas last night. Kreider would fit on Vegas. Could that be a hockey trade? Vegas is better than Dallas which is why the Stars want to add.
Lindgren and Smith can bring in 2nd round picks. Smith cost the Rangers a 2nd and 5th. The Rangers can retain 50% after Pittsburgh retained 25%. $1,687,500 player. Can the Rangers get a first round pick plus a few other picks packing Lindgren and Smith together? Retain 50% of Lindgren's $4.5M. $$2.25M. $3,937,500 for both players. It's really less in actual cap space closer to the deadline. The Capitals packaged Orlov and Hathaway to Boston for a 1st round pick and swapped that pick to Toronto for Sandin. Smith has a limited NTC to 8 teams. The Rangers use the pick to select a player or flip for a young NHL player. A top 4/5 D and a top 6/9 Cup winning forward. Maybe the Rangers take back a lesser expiring contract to make the money work if necessary. The Trouba trade allows them to use the space in many ways and still have money to add players. The two retentions will be off the books after this season.
The Rangers play the Finish kid acquired from Anaheim in place of Lindgren and Othmann who should be back soon or Berard replaces Smith.
Kakko? A young top 4 D would be nice. Upgrade at forward.
First step was removing Trouba from the team and his cap hit off the books
Second step was re-signing Igor
More steps are coming
