Take a look at how most rebuilds go too. Even the "successful" ones take 10+ years before they win and at that point was the rebuild even a success? Who is to say some other method also wouldn't have yielded success over that massive time frame.

Chicago must have sucked for longer than that. Pittsburgh had one of the best players ever and another top 50 NHL player of all time. And even that's not a foolproof way to win it all like Edmonton has shown.

Maybe he and his wife have fond memories of being there, sure. But that team and environment is not really any better than the Rangers at this point. The teams are in a very similar spot mentally, and the fanbases and media are not having it anymore. Sure, New York is New York but Ottawa is also a Canadian market. It's not really any easier.
I believe he was in a relationship with a local girl during his years in OTT and they broke up before his trade to NY. He was single for a couple of years as a Ranger before he married his high school crush.
If Chicago wins game 7 instead of Martinez scoring on an octuple deflection, the 2014 Rangers win the Stanley Cup.
Martinez f***ed us over twice that year.
And if Price doesn't get hurt it's possible our last cup final would have been in 1994. In fact it's more likely that a healthy Price beats the Rangers than the Rangers beat the lowly *checks notes* dynasty Chicago Blackhawks.
Rangers had Prices number before Eller caused the injury.

That whole series was spent in Montreal's zone. They don't beat us with Price and Tokarski in the net at the same time.

That Habs team was what the Rangers usually are -- an unserious team with good goaltending running into a serious team.

I'm not machinehead, I don't think these teams had no shot. Maybe not against who they played but they could have gotten lucky with the draw, injuries, whatever. Is that a great strategy? No. Is it better than almost certainly every other scenario where we don't cut our rebuild short? Yes. Would I take the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL that haven't won shit with Lamar and frankly I think Lamar has a ceiling or the Giants or Jets? I know who I'd pick.
I'd pick the two Superbowls. If it was one you would have an argument. They won f***ing two. You are an insane person.

Aside from their young studs who are probably unavailable, I think Marchment and Lindell would be good fits for our needs
I really am interested in Bischel or Bourque, preferably both. If Drury is going to think long term now it might be worth it. Re-tool time for real, everything we've done in the past 5 years was just a warmup.

If we end up tanking off the face of the earth I'm praying for Hagens or another elite prospect to land in our lap and in a couple years we'll be re-adjusted to compete with the young Eastern Conference teams in wars.

-Extend Shesty
-Extend Cuylle
-Get rid of Lindgren for draft stock
-Get rid of Trouba for draft stock
-Get rid of Smith for draft stock
-Use Kreider for farm replenishment
-Wait for Perreault

If you only knew how little I care about those two Super Bowls. And I wasn't talking about the Giants from ancient times, more about recent years. During Lamar's career both the Jets and Giants have been a joke. I'd take Lamar constantly getting his ass kicked by a non-gadget QB but exciting regular seasons over whatever the f*** the Jets and Giant have been doing. There's literally a better chance the Rangers would be the Jets/Giants than the Penguins.

Chicago must have sucked for longer than that. Pittsburgh had one of the best players ever and another top 50 NHL player of all time. And even that's not a foolproof way to win it all like Edmonton has shown.

Here is a list of recent cup winners and the first top 5 pick they had before winning

2024 - Panthers - Gudbrandson (2010)
2023 - Golden Knights - N/A as they were an expansion team
2022 - Avalanche - Duchene (2009)
2020/2021 - Lightning - Stamkos (2008)
2019 - Blues - Erik Johnson (2006)
2018 - Capitals - Alex Ovechkin (2004)
2017/2016 - Penguins - Ryan Whitney (2002)
2015/2013/2010 - Blackhawks - Cam Barker (2004)
2014/2012 - Kings - Thomas Hickey (2007)
2011 - Bruins - Joe Thornton (1997) / Lars Jonsson (2000)

Are we really considering these successes? Most of these teams took 10+ years to win anything, and also had a bunch of early busts. In many of these cases, it wasn't even the guys taken with those picks that was the key but guys taken later like Kucherov, Bergeron etc.

Complete tear downs/rebuilds are generally bad strategies that take extremely long to yield results, so long that you won't even know if that was the major reason for it. This is of course, not even considering all these teams that attempted to tear it down and have been stuck bad for a very long time (Buffalo, for one).

I do not give any shit about if players are soft, the only thing I care about is if they are good NHL players and can move the puck

Waive Trouba
Kreider to Dallas
Igor to Edmonton
Lindgren to Colorado

Miller can be moved, maybe to somewhere like Ottawa for Norris for Pinto+
Zib could be moved if he waives
Panarin retained if we go full f*** it
Colorado definitely will want to do something sooner rather than later at this rate

If it was the 90s and the NHL was still fun, Neil Drury would’ve traded 4 guys off the roster for Frankenstein Tkachuk if the team needed a shakeup. Grow a pair!

What would you guys seek out of a team like Dallas if Jim Nill wants to do business with Drury for Kreids?
ck is NOT the prob
we should do EVERYTHING else first
obv if there is too much on the table you don't turn it down,
but lately this board is underrating ck
he is ballpark track for 40+ gs, and his assists are down due to zib

tell it like it is, let your conscience be your guide

I think we have to make any good trades out there. No forced trades. No neautral trades but if we have any sure good trades make them. Nobody would be untouchable. I would like to keep Laf and some others but no Ranger is a top 10 player so Id listen to all offers. That includes Shesty and Fox but the prices would have to be crazy high.

ok, the latest bern blueprint

Per my usual, best hope for at least 1 if not multiple cups = EXTEND the window
this means deal vets for youth, few exceptions notwithstanding.

The out of nowhere Zib meltdown has complicated things with great negative forces. Even a premium payment to remove him must be acceptably profitable to a trade partner and that is not readily visible other than gutting nyr to an intolerable degree.

1. Rs-‘nucks
VAN has just over 6 in cap space. Understandably want to keep JTM; that said, while he is out, they are short. Also need D w/Hronek out. Rs need pivots and cap space. So here is the offer:
take prospect Sykora for the more available bottom 6 C Raty
take Robertson for injured expiring Forbort
take Jones for Juulsen
of these Forbort is highest paid 1.5, everybody else < 1 roughly cancels out
and we throw in Zib max retained reduced 8.5 to 4.25
ballpark cap dif is 3.75-ish hit to VAN

Further detail:
Raty [elc expiring -> rfa] > Sykora [3 yrs elc remaining] right now but ‘nucks can spare him.
LD Robertson has size etc but has not been properly developed; they kept not giving him a chance, yet resigned him this season, what does that say? But Forbort is expiring, older so it is a possibly useful body for an unavailable one.
I always liked Juulsen and give him full props for coming back after his early injury history. Jones is young, not big at 6'0 but fast, fluid skater and can play either side.

All in all a small +.
So why accommodate on Zib? Risk-reward. You are gambling that there appears to be no physical damage, the issue is he suddenly snakebit in an ongoing funk. Howev, if he was playing with his fellow Swede pal and not under the same pressure to not produce as 1C [that’s JTM when he returns], he will perform sufficiently in top 6. And again, we think there is no issue w/JTM but this is a useful stopgap while JT is out, possibly insurance if there is something we are unaware of. And worst case here for ‘nucks, they have to attach 1.5ish or so to move him to a cap floor club.

For Rs, we are looking at 4.5 structural cap recovery. Juulsen ok bottom pair. Raty fine to build with at position of need. Forbort, if he returns, is 3LD, depth after selling Lindgren

2. Rs - Sens
LaF + Fox + NYR 2025 1st, unprotected + Othmann + F prospect BMB (Bryce McConnell Barker) + Vesey
for
Sanderson +Batheson + Pinto + Kleven + Grieg +

6 assets for 5 [5 bodies for 5]. Too biz to add up, looks cap close.
Sens upgrade top 1RD, costs 1LD. LaF > Bath and huge marketing benefits to bringing in local 1OA. Sens are minus a first round pick, so adding Rs pick which looks good atm, is also huge. It does thin pivot but nice W add in Othmann. Overall value balances.

Rs get 1LD can juggle RD, add keepers Pinto + Kleven, with Grieg + Batheson useful in follow up trade.

3. NYR-LAK
While surrender of Byfield is a major concession, Kings win this deal, but it is still a fit for Rs.

W/LA in on discussions, Shesty extended 12.2 x 5, no NMC, limited ntc, which as an extension kicks in next season. Rs eat 2m per beginning this season and continuing.
Add dynamic W Batheson
Add former first rounder Grieg to strengthen mid six C

Rs get Byfield

Now there is too much on the plate for Kings to refuse. Obv Byfield is heir to Kopitar and now that has to have plan b alternate, but Ks still have good pivot depth and too many issues solved by this to decline.

The above 3 for Byfield

NOTE: with this trade now, Shesty’s value this season is not 12.2 - 2, but current 5.6 -2 = 3.6, so
That suppresses cap imbalance.

4. Rs - Ds
Smith + Lindgren + Berard
for
Dumoulin and Helleson + 2028 pick 3rd rounder upgrades to 2nd if Berard checks out

rationale: Ducks looking for F support, are good at pivot regardless of Zegras but he appears injured so a useful body couldn’t hurt. Smith is that.
Helleson has shown signs but is far enough down the depth chart they can let him go. Dumoulin would be a small wince but worth it.
Lindgren is a stopgap, if he holds up he offers depth makes moving Fowler easier

deal Trouba

So what does all this leave us?

Kreider - Byfield - Panarin [until we move him, not extending]
Pinto - Tro - Brodz
Cuylle - Chytil/Raty/Brodz - Kakko
Edstrom - Brodz -Rempe

Raty, Carrick = forward depth

Sanderson - Schneider
KAM - Kleven
Dumoulin - Mancini/Helleson/Juulsen
Forbort, if/when he plays again

usual suspects for LD depth: Scanlin/Harpur/Mackey/Ruhwedel
Rasmus Larsson and Hank Kempf may be close enuf for cup of coffee if available

Broberg on LTIR
after the above, possible buy now w/St. Louis for acceptable assets and add late in the yr

Garand reinforced Quick + Domingue

Was just about to mention Hertl. Like you said, that's off the top of the head. I'm at work so I don't have time right now to do any sort of deep dive. Its rare but it certainly does happen. I also feel it's really unlikely Mika waives, but I have no issue with anyone speculating some sort of trade scenario. That's kinda the point of this thread
Speculation without some level of reality s just wasting everyone’s time.

Did Hertl have a full NMC?

I read here “it happens” but I haven’t seen an example of someone who recently signed long term with a full NMC waiving so he could be traded.

Can he play goalie? Georgiev isn't a high bar, but preferrably league average.
